what's the reasoning behind the very weird staggered announcement

No idea. Probably some moron advertising exec convinced the DFB this was the way to keep the country thinking about this home tourney and generate hype/buzz about the selection :dunno:

Or maybe it's a very clever way to bring the country together in hatred of such a dumb f***ing way to announce the roster?

So we've got:

Neuer,
Tah, Schlotterbeck, Rüdiger, Koch,
Raum, Mittelstädt, Kimmich,
Pavlovic, Andrich, Gundogan, Groß...not sure if he's been picked as a midfielder or Kimmich backup
Wirtz, Sane, Führich,
Havertz, Füllkrug, Undav

2 of those final 8 spots will go to keepers, 1 to a CB (probably), 1 to Musiala, 1 to another creative, and then (depending on where Groß will play) 1 to a FB/midfielder. That leaves 2 spots that can float around a bit. Probably some iteration of:

ter Stegen
GK - Trapp, Baumann, Ortega
CB - (Hummels), Thiaw, Chabot, Ginter, Süle, Bisseck
CM/DM (or Henrichs) - Goretzka, Can, Kroos, Stiller, Khedira
Musiala
AM/W - Müller, Brandt, Gnabry, Hoffman, Burkardt, Adeyemi

with those last spots going to a 2nd AM/W + CM/DMs (if Groß is a FB), 2nd AM/W + Henrichs if not.
Müller announced himself.

Did not expect a 4th keeper to get picked. Happy for Beier though.

taking 4 keepers is... dumb... and a massive waste of the bigger squads...

at a glance, brandt is really the only snub that jumps out for me (not including goretzka and hummels, which both have context).

Yeah, assuming no LeGo or Mats; only tweaks I'd make would have been to replace Nübel with Brandt, Koch or Anton with Chabot, and Groß with Can just so that if Andrich gets hurt, our only 6 isn't a teenager.

Reportedly, Nagelsmann tends to run 4 goals/parallel matches in training. Seems silly to waste a roster spot for that, but it's also not like the 23rd outfield player is likely to see time either.

If that's the case, would seem to make more sense to bring along extra goalkeeper coach (e.g recently retired keeper) to be the 4th keeper in training.

Kante was a weird pick. He must really hate Bouba Kamara.
Also half surprised he picked up Barcola without any cap yet.
Rest is unsurprising as much as uninspiring.
No Doue, no Olise, no Todibo.
F. Mendy back I didn't expect because DD doesn't like him.

Kamara injured

France has too many guys but many will be on the Olympic squad so that will be the consolation

Yeah that is such a silly reason to not bring Brandt, another holding 6...so that Andrich's health isn't the only thing stopping us from relying on a teenager that isn't much quicker than Kroos...or even Adeyemi...just as a wildcard who brings something different to the squad with his explosiveness.

I do like the options JN has given himself in the midfield & attacking areas...though it's hard to argue for any starting 11 that doesn't include Wirtz, Musiala, and Sane, having the option to tweak that base shape to either bring an extra midfielder or forward on, is very Nagelsmann.*

It's hard to feel super confident in our defense...especially given Schlotterbeck's previous luck with the NT...but the more I picture the different ways JN could use this roster, the easier it becomes to see how we could be a very difficult opponent.

Wirtz - Havertz - Musiala
Gundo - Kroos
Andrich
Mittelstädt - Tah/Nico - Rüdiger - Kimmich
Neuer

Füllkrug/Havertz
Musiala - Wirtz - Sane
Gundo/Kroos - Andrich
Mittelstädt - Tah/Nico - Rüdiger - Kimmich
Neuer

Beier - Füllkrug - Undav
Wirtz - Musiala
Andrich/Pavlovic
Mittelstädt - Tah/Nico - Rüdiger - Kimmich
Neuer

*Beier and Undav in particular are the kinds of second/outside forwards he got a ton out of at Hoffenheim

Some of the biggest matches in junior football today as the UEFA European U17 Championship opens with Spain vs. Portugal and France vs. England in the group of death.
