They haven't been picking drastically different from us in terms of position.... but if you can land Wyatt Johnston, Logan Stankoven, Mavrik Bourque, Thomas Harley, and Lian Bischel... vs. us blowing Tomasino, trading Askarov, still waiting on Svechkov and Kemell... I mean, they are killing us out of the gate. Hopefully time will tell at least a bit of an improvement on our side... but we don't have any NHLers to show, and they have 5.
Add Robertson to that list as a second rounder and they're smoking everyone. I'm not a huge "around the league" kind of person and I only know their success because we're in the same division but is anyone drafting and developing like them?

Drafting is the single reason they haven't had to rebuild or suffer through long stretches of being horrible. They stayed relevant over the last ten years and are only looking at continuing to get better.

It's possible that all 4 of the picks you listed for the Preds become regular NHL players. Tomasino is emerging now that he's getting a consistent chance, and Askarov is getting a few starts in SJ.

It's hard to separate the nature of the talent from the nurture through the franchise's development. Dallas and Nashville very clearly have much different approaches on the development end. Dallas has a stepwise development process that works their picks up the ladder and plugs them into roles in the lineup where they can be successful. The kid gets veteran support all along the way to teach him the game, how to be a pro, all the off-ice tricks. Their program works. In Nashville, we let our guys cook and cook and cook in Milwaukee. They play with other young guys against inferior competition. If they are brought up, they only play regular minutes if there are injuries. And if they don't light the lamp like a Christmas tree on demo mode, they get minimal minutes, the pressbox, and then cut outright.

The other component to this is the front office having a roadmap for the roster overall. When Dallas drafts a kid, they seem to target a guy that fits their system and for whom there will be a plan on where he will fit into the lineup potentially. Contrasted to us, we are apparently drafting guys based solely on perceived relative value in the draft. The best player available. So we end up with an Askarov pick and then figure out later that we really like Saros and are going to extend him for a million years. So whatever the roadmap might have been, it goes up in smoke. We do this with other guys as well. Instead of continuing their progression, we bring in a handful of tweeners and journeyman in the offseason and those guys block the paths to keep the pipeline moving. So again, we're left overcooking a guy until his ELC and 1st contract are more or less over, and we have no idea if the guy can even play. It's been working out well for other teams when they pick up our draft picks for next to nothing.

Robertson picked a couple picks after Tolvanen

So once Lauzon, Carrier, and Josi slot back in and the defense goes back to being a clown show does Trotz admit that we need an overhaul there? Wilsby and Blankenburg have outplayed both Lauzon and Carrier.

Skjei is actually playing decent defense and looks like Blankenburg is a good match for him. Schenn has actually been ok with MDG which i think makes sense. They have complimentary play styles. Stastney would work well there too. Wilsby has been solid everywhere tried.
While I don’t disagree the kids have been good, I’m not ready to throw the baby out with the bath water. I’ll remind everyone of a cautionary tale called Jonathan Blum. I’d like more of a sample size before we go yeah, let’s move on from certain guys.

I do think Wilsby is the pick of the litter. If Stastney can stay healthy he’s another one I’d like to see long term.

I’d also like to see how these kids do in the playoffs. Unfortunately, that’ll have to wait until next year.

I'd keep in mind too though that some of that is muddied by the fact that Poile retired and Trotz came in.

I still say had Poile still been the GM Saros would have never been given that contract because Askarov was his long term plan. No doubt in my mind Poile made that pick for a reason, and that reason wasn't to have Saros starting until he was 38.

I honestly think Poile generally did draft with a purpose, it just ended up not being great a chunk of the time.

I personally wasnt thrilled with Carrier's extension and think now is the time to maximize Lauzon's trade value and i want nothing to do with extending him after next season.

Shouldve kept fabbro and let carrier walk. Sure the kids could revert to a tire fire but is that really any different from what the vets gave us before being injured?

I was definitely on board proposing to let Carrier walk. I didn't really expect Fabbro to do as well as he has in Columbus, but there's still no doubt in my mind that he's a better hockey player than Lauzon or Carrier.

We need to keep a little quiet about this though, eh? NHL GMs are pretty dumb overall. If Lauzon has a lot of hits and we're playing him and Carrier in the top-4 for minutes, we'll get something nice for them in a trade. Whereas if they catch on that those guys suck... well.. shhhh. :sarcasm:

I know I am beating a dead horse but I can't help it. The Preds have either Waived/Traded/Didn't resign players that are playing very well compared to the current roster players. Does that blame go on the GM, The Coach, scouting or the whole bunch?

Tolvanen 8/7/15
Fabbro 3/4/7
Tomasino 3/1/4
Afanasyev 3/6/9 KHL
Sherwood 11/6/17
Zucker 8/13/21

3 of these players would be in the top 6 in scoring for the current Preds team. 1 of them would lead the team in Goals. Sometimes I think they think they know more or better than they really do! Only 1 player is over 30 and 1 is close. The others are all young and look to be playing well. Just not playing well for the Preds.

IMHO development is the biggest issue followe byF scouting...to many good players around the league to be drafting

Watched most of the first last night, forced to the rangers feed, and their announcers kept commenting how the rangers pressure was forcing 6 icings and multiple defensive zone turnovers in such a short time.

Shows that they've not watched any of our games because that shit has been our bread and butter all season.

I assume they just try to sift through to find positives in the shit pile just like ours do.

Del G started strong then sortof struggled here and there. If lauzon or carrier are healthy and coming off of IR, i personally think Blankenburg and Wilsby have outplayed all of em but Del G is the odd man out of the new guys and Stastney is better than Del G in my opinion. Just sortof sucks because i think Del G is an adequate bottom pairing dman for the most part. Hope he passes through for a callup later if needed
