I've said before that I questioned if Bruno's system might be the problem and that he should change his system or he himself needs to be changed. Well I no longer question, I am now convinced. If he is too stubborn to adapt his system to the strengths of his players then I see no reason to keep him on board. I still believe these guys are either not truly buying in, or the system is too difficult to operate with their collective skill set. Once again "Dazed and Confused" is the operative word.

This team needs some youthful legs and enthusiasm to balance out the old legs and laid back wisdom. The best players on the team are at least 30 with many closer to 35 than 30.

Forsberg: 30
Stamkos: 34..35 in a few months
Marchy: 33....34 next month
Nyquist: 35
ROR: 33.....34 in a few months (speed was never his game to begin with)
Josi: 34
Skjei: 30

Vet players who have been useful at times in their careers as Preds but ultimately are mediocre: Smith, Janko, McCarron, Schenn. Why does Brunette have so much loyalty to these guys?

Last night Brunette's answer via ice time strategy when struggling is to cut the young players ice time. The three lowest ice times, respectively, were Evangelista, L'Heureux, Pars.

Maybe I can sort of understand that the ultimate success of the team will depend on our veteran players so double, triple, quadruple down on the until something works but this is brutal.

There's no question that the team will only be successful if the vets you mention get it going. But that's no justification (as you say) to cut those three guys' ice times the way he did last night. None of them were playing particularly poorly. Vange has been off, for sure, though certainly no worse than most of the vets. The other two I thought played quite well. I can't come up with a coherent explanation for how ice time is currently being distributed.

Good news: we're tied with Montreal, Buffalo, and Philly for the 2nd slot in the ping-pong ball derby.

Bad news: if you happen to be a coach working for the Preds.

silly question. might be my MS acting up. TBL come to you offering a 2nd for Stamkos at 50%. Would you take it?

Unless we're actually going to blow it up in a big way (like, get people to waive their NMCs and trade Forsberg+ROR+Josi type of blow it up), I don't want to get out of Joey and Duchene's dead money just to be saddled with Stamkos's. Pass, but it's interesting to think about

Forsberg: 30 - NMC, signed til he's 36
Stamkos: 34 - NMC, signed til he's 38
Marchy: 33 - NMC, signed til he's 38
Nyquist: 35 - UFA after this year
ROR: 33 - signed til he's 35
Josi: 34 - NMC, signed til he's 38
Skjei: 30 - NMC, signed til he's 37
Saros; 29 - NMC starting next year, signed til he's 38

Added contract expiry age to your comment above - unless a ton of people want to waive NMCs, which I can't imagine they would given how recently we signed them, we're stuck. Our top guys are old, signed forever, have full control over trades, and are underperforming. We can't make major changes without their buy-in. The only change we can really make is Bruno.

Just a thought, but I’m going too thick more about it at game 20

Trotz isn’t going to be able to move all those older players. Theres really only one person he can move to attempt to drastically change how the team performs. I’m not advocating for this but that’s the only single move he could make.

Exactly. There's really no other option to try to change the course.

So many old dudes with NMCs - no rebuild is plausible with all of those anchors.

Maybe he should tell his coach to give the current younger players a legitimate chance to play....

Some interesting quotes on that one:

"(Filip) Forsberg, (Roman) Josi, (Ryan) O'Reilly, (Brady) Skjei, and of course Stamkos and Marchessault, they are here," Trotz said. "They aren't going anywhere. And (Juuse) Saros. But everybody else, I might pull out and put in a young kid."

"If we don't find that (second line center) then maybe we start the process of letting some of those kids come up and play with Stamkos at center," Trotz said. "Maybe Reid Schaefer or (Zachary) L'Heureux or (Joakim) Kemell has to go in that wing spot."

I'll believe it when I see it.

Evangelista seems to have regressed this year. He's taken his playmaking capability and turned it into over thinking and playing slower than he is. I'm not sure where the fault lies, but it's frustrating to watch.

Reading between the lines I'm guessing this means Novak and Luke are in increasing danger now. Ol' 20 minutes a night Steve totally in the clear though.
Yeah this quote honestly makes me feel worse about where we stand. Seems like Trotz is unwilling to put any blame on Stamkos for playing poorly and instead will just push the blame to the guys playing with him which is just insane. Quite frankly everyone on the team needs to be better but it's insane to blame the guys that aren't getting forcefed ice time.

I mean, if he pulls out any of Sissons, Smith, McCarron, Jankowski and puts in a young kid, great. Or if it's on D, sure, pull out Lauzon and Carrier and Schenn... you didn't name them. I'll believe it when I see it. But that's the stuff we actually need to do.

Yeah that’s all easier said than done unless he’s willing to just straight up waive guys, which would be terrible asset management. Otherwise it takes time to trade people, and without roster space you can’t actually call anyone up.
