Just in time for us to buy at the deadline!

:eek2: That's quite out of the blue. Cap websites were basically just assuming that it had been dropped or quietly gone away, that the Philadelphia termination was legit past the 60-day window on the initial filing, and that we also were effectively off the hook.

Philadelphia is probably just about excited as we are that this is finally getting dealt with... uh... fully 6 months after it happened (the termination was originally announced on August 20th, 2024). Way to go NHL. I know your people have been REALLY busy handling... all the other grievances out there?... :dunno:

Why do I still have a soft spot in my Pred Heart for Joey? Joey flamed out (if it's possible to have "Joey" and "flame" in the same sentence) on us way too early. Yet, he was our 1C for the best two years of our franchise. JOFA was an elite line, and Joey was an assist magician. He was also a great guy who loved Nashville.

I still think one of these days we will hear just how damaged he was after that SCF run. There is just part of me that can't help but think he was playing through some permanent damage as a result of all of that.

It's the main reason I'm not as hard on him as some. It took years for us to hear about Wilson's problem.

He visibly never was back up to speed after that. I really think a lot of the "laziness" we'd always hear about was just that he was slowed down by that and other injuries

F***ing Kesler.

I still feel like if we had a a healthy Johansen they wouldve won the Cup.

I wonder if it will be another 6 months before we here what the outcome of the hearing was? Joey's contract might have expired by the time we do... :sarcasm:

Early this year I had my eye on swinging down and hitting the 2 NYC games and back up for the Bruins game. Now it's hard to even justify paying to see this team at all, but I'll be at the Boston game

With this being our first bottom-of-the-pack season in awhile, it's made me even more sure the "Gold Plan" is the way to fix tanking and the rooting against your team that comes with it.

For those unfamiliar, once your team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, a new counter starts keep track of points you gain from that point on. The team with the MOST points, from their elimination onward, gets the first overall pick.

Teams eliminated very early have the most games to get points, but you want your team to win. Heck, you could have a game in the last week of the year where the *winner* gets the 1st overall instead of the loser. If a team just misses the playoffs, they still end up later in the draft because they have less time to accumulate picks. Still get the best young players to bad teams, but without cheering against your team.

OH MY GOD, he's still talking about serial winners and culture. At least he admits that he's still "a coach at heart"...

What Predators GM Barry Trotz said about tanking, NHL draft and expectations for rest of season

Alex Daugherty

The Nashville Predators have virtually no chance at making the NHL playoffs this season, but that doesn't mean general manager Barry Trotz wants the team to lose for a better draft pick.

"We're playing some good teams down the stretch and I want us to play well," Trotz said in a conversation with The Tennessean.

Trotz, who is in his second year with the Predators, said he wants the team to continue preparing to win games down the stretch, citing the importance of building a winning culture.

"I'm a coach at heart," Trotz said. "Our team has been built on good culture and good character. I would be disappointed if our players threw in the towel."

The idea of "tanking" for a better draft pick is common in professional sports, though it's less common in the NHL. With a lottery system for determining the top of the draft order, finishing in last place doesn't guarantee the No. 1 pick.

Nashville (20-29-7, 47 points) is 30th in the overall standings ahead of Tuesday's game against the Florida Panthers. According to Money Puck, with 26 games to play, the Predators have a 9.3% chance of earning the top pick, behind the Chicago Blackhawks (15.9%) and the San Jose Sharks (22.9%).

According to the NHL's draft lottery rules, the bottom 11 teams have a chance to earn the No. 1 overall pick, though the odds increase significantly for the bottom five teams. The bottom 12-16 teams can only move up a maximum of 10 spots and cannot earn the No. 1 overall pick.

"Of course, from a management or organizational standpoint, you want the best pick," Trotz said. "Would I rather have the third pick versus the 10th pick? Yeah, absolutely. That's just human nature."

But Trotz, at least for now, thinks establishing a winning culture is more important than the potential high draft picks.

"I want players that want to win. I want players that are serial winners. So we should play that way. I'm not really worried about the score, I'm worried about how we play every night, how we compete, and how we are building something for next year."

After a summer where Trotz committed over $111 million to build a playoff contender, the Predators have struggled to win games this season. The problem is multi-faceted - they've struggled on offense, defense and with goaltending.

Now Trotz must figure out how to re-tool his roster less than one year after its construction.

"You get to a certain point in the season, most managers would say they want a top pick. But I'm a culture guy, right? I want the whole assessment of our team, our players, our staff to be included if they are committed to winning games."

The Predators take on the Florida Panthers on Tuesday at Bridgestone Arena (7 p.m. CT, FanDuel Sports Network).

It’s been awhile since I’ve done anything but read your thoughts and ideas but I need to say something. The Preds are a team in name only. They are unorganized individuals dressing as though they are a team but failing to accomplish that. Who exactly are Stamkos, Marchessault,Skjel, Barron, Englund and Shenn? They are castoffs; not wanted any longer by their former teams. Oh, all sorts of reasons are floated around but the truth is they were rejected and, if wanted, could still be where they once were. They were wounded by this rejection and opted for big bucks to play out their careers. Not that I would accuse them of purposefully loafing but it’s difficult to uproot a career and move on with the same degree of enthusiasm of their youth. They fought the fight to the NHL once and lack the will to do it again. When Stamkos is elected to the HOF, it will be as a TB super star with a couple of cups; not as a Pred and I’m not calling him out, just observing reality. And so it goes up and down the lineup. The kids are not ready. Saros did not prove to be Rinne; O’Reilly and Nyquist are pretty much done and the roster is filled out with AHL run of the mill talent. Only Forsberg and Josi remain as a remanent of a once true team. It’s not the players fault but is the product of a once competent, well oiled franchise gone awry. I fear the presence of a well off owner turned the money machine over to inexperienced operators throwing cash around rather aimlessly. I see no clear vision. One possible result I fear is the loss of this franchise as the excitement of the past may be lost in the exodus of the fan base. I don’t recognize this team as Predators; just a mish mash of guys coached poorly and led by a well meaning rookie GM learning on the go. This is serious.

I don't think we can be bad enough to catch san jose. Even catching Shitcago would be very difficult. Definitely have it in use to stay behind the rest though. Will need some lottery luck to get the top pick but just hoping to stay in the top 3 at this moment.

If trotz really wants to secure the tank, he will trade RoR, Nyquist, and Schenn. Then he will send the youth back to MIL to play meaningful hockey and pull up the aging vets like Gravel, Friedman, Lucchini or even take on a bad expiring contract or two.

Bruno will continue to make puzzling lineup decisions but the youth will be protected by it.
Stamkos, sissons, Lucchini, McCarron down the center. Novak to wing because why not

I don't know...you're never going to get a GM admitting to want a tank. I actually think it's good news that he said "Would I rather have the third pick versus the 10th pick? Yeah, absolutely. That's just human nature."

Right you dont want the players that are a part of the future to willingly accept and be ok with the team being bad. That doesnt set them up to be better next year. Thay said, you also dont not make moves to make next years (and beyond) team better so that we can win an extra game here and there this year. Go ahead and rip the bandaid off move nyquist and others for the best returns possible. Focus on next season and the year after

That interview is depressing. The culture starts from the top. If he wants to establish a winning culture, he needs to demand that from himself, his coaches, and on down to his players. But it's obvious he doesn't know what he's doing and is happy to be a passenger and let someone else install a winning culture.

And what is this winning culture bs anyway? Scoreboard! He's built a losing culture. A culture in which his top culture piece, with his make-believe NMC, literally says, "Well, no one is happy."

Actually, it's borderline delusional. Trotz is up in his box, eating his hot dog, and reading those cartoon clouds above his players' heads to see if they "really want to win." His "culture" focus is spillover coach speak on who's putting together a few good shifts in a row and if the guys get along in the locker room. Let's keep chopping wood boys! What are your feelings? How are those advanced stats trending? A slight uptick in a few of them the last 3 games? Great. He's doing that instead of his job which is doing GM sh1t, like assembling a balanced roster, trying to move out deadwood contracts, get his younger guys on the ice to give them proper evaluations so he can make proper decisions about contracts/trades/drafting, evaluating whether his coaches are actually winning coaches and make players better and help them reach their potential. All that hockey ops stuff beyond filling out the lineup card before a game.
