You are pretty darn high if you think Necas (career high: 16 goals in the AHL) is in a competition for the jobs of two proven 20+ goal scoring NHL veterans.

And regardless of what one cherrypicked stat might have told people who weren't watching the games, Svechnikov fully lapped Zykov last preseason, 4 points to 2... when they both made the roster, they started with similar ice time... and then Svech started lapping him in regular-season points as well, at which point Zykov was jettissoned. Everyone saw this happening in real time and understood what was going on. I don't see Necas lapping anybody right now, do you?
zykov had 6 points in 4 games last preseason. i'm pretty sure you're looking at his 17-18 numbers. i remember the second powerplay unit with slavin and zykov lighting it up and getting excited about the season only for zykov to completely disappear once the regular season started.

I'm going on the game summaries from the Canes' website:

Carolina Hurricanes - Tampa Bay Lightning - September 18th, 2018
Carolina Hurricanes - Washington Capitals - September 28th, 2018
Nashville Predators - Carolina Hurricanes - September 30th, 2018

I guess he had 4 points in two games that are missing from their site? :dunno:

In any case, Zykov did make the roster and skated just as many minutes as Svech for a couple of games. The prior post was framed as though Svech was chosen over Zykov... he wasn't. Both earned their shot, both were given their shot. Zykov just didn't stick (and wasn't gifted anything when that became obvious).

And ultimately the idea of Svech being sent back to juniors is a lot sillier than the idea of Necas being denied a first-line role to start the regular season. That he was going to be fine in a small role, building up to a big one, was obvious from the get-go. That Necas is failing to make an overwhelming case for himself so far is equally obvious. If he doesn’t step up soon, the idea of his being sent to the AHL is a real possibility in a way that Svech being sent to the OHL never was.

pretty sure I remember Brind'Amour mentioning a big hit between Pesce and Necas in practice, so that's probably why Necas is sore today.

when i dared insinuate that necas hasn't looked even close to ready this preseason, it produced an avalanche of dissent. i'm not rooting against the kid at all, but is anyone that went out on that limb about him even remotely concerned?

Necas doesn't look ready. He had a better showing on Wednesday, I'll give him that. We'll see what happens but I'd be surprised if he's not in Charlotte for a good chunk of the season. Barring injuries of course. I think once it clicks (if it clicks) he's a shoe in for the top 6, but something is just off still. Maybe it's all confidence, but eventually he'll have to get in front of that. Gauthier came in with a determined mindset and the confidence to back it up. That's why he's looked much better, not necessarily because he is.

I don't really care if he makes it one way or another. Yeah, it would kinda suck if he didn't because most were expecting him to make the jump. I was just pointing out that it was ridiculous to make sweeping generalizations about his game after 1 preseason game like it seemed some were doing. I still stand by that even though he has been mostly invisible, and I don't really think anyone could truly say they 100% knew he would be underwhelming after just one game.

So D pairings tonight:

Slavin-Hamilton
Edmunson-Pesce
Forsling-Fleury

Giving Haydn every chance to show he can play RHD I guess.

I guess I don't understand why Necas making the team or not making the team is such a hot button issue.

I think it's because we were counting on him, and his shaky camp is concerning.

BTW, Staal, Slavin and Martinook are wearing "A"s in warmups.

My picks to score tonight are 21 and 37, now that they're both on their natural sides.

The pairings posted earlier had Forsling with Pesce, ostensibly as a place-holder for Gardiner, and Edmundson with Fleury, since they are likely to play together. Doesn't mean I'm right and you're wrong, just reporting what I saw.

Just going by a Mike Smith tweet (and maybe it's changed.)

it's just annoying when you make an observation, get trashed for it, and then said observation proves to potentially have some validity to it and everyone acts as if that was the expectation the whole time. 4 out of 5 who crawled up my ass about it will eventually rewrite it to some tempered variation. to me, that's the eye roll.

Yes. It's very annoying.

Yeah, very cool. Coached him once for a couple games when he played (roller) with one of my sons, so I take full credit.

"He referred to himself as Boom Boom. I mean, it wasn't necessarily weird at first, but then he started speaking in 3rd person, 'Boom Boom not happy with that slappy!' ..he'd yell, one time he mumbled something about his 'hotwife'. I don't know, I never saw her but something wasn't adding up."

What's funny, is that it was only for about 3 games. With him on the team, we were "too good" for the roller hockey league we were in so they took him off and moved him to a worse team as he was clearly the best player in the league.
