No Necas? I guess he gets the last Wash game with a vet group? He better make sure he shines, cuz it looks like he could get pushed out with so many new guys and Gauthier killing it.

I am excited to see how the team looks tonight. Its nice to see most of the big boy club together. I hope Goat has a great showing so if Dzingle has to miss some games that both Goat and Necas can make the opening night lineup. Also Chip said that it's most likely Mrazek and Reimer in net tonight.

Chip says Gardiner is still MIA as well. Necas missing too so he may have a minor injury or personal day.

I hope for a good showing tonight. The last nascar game was disappointing. There was something missing from the energy level that we saw all last preseason. Maybe they're pacing themselves, now that they know what they have to do to succeed. But that constant feeling of almost desperation to dominate the other team at all times isn't there.

Presumably McGinn is a placeholder for Dzingel. Still seems like they should have put Necas up on that line instead. I so very much hate the thought that Rod is going to try and shoehorn McGinn into a top-6 spot when injuries occur.

I realize you wrote this before hearing about Necas being injured, but I don't hate Rod doing this. Like last year with Svech, until a young guy can prove he can handle himself on both ends of the ice consistently and EARNS a spot, then he shouldn't be put in the top 6 just because of draft pedigree or potential. If there's an injury, one of Foegele, McGinn or even Martinook will move up until someone else (Necas, Gauthier, etc..) proves they deserve it.

That said, it's pre-season so wouldn't jump to any conclusions right now anyhow.

No goalie worked great for Tampa. Good to see rod adjusting his strategy too.

Re: Necas, he got hurt falling over because of course he did

His shot is like the main cannon in the Excalibur spaceship in the Babylon 5 spin-off Crusade. He fires the cannon to score but then right after that the whole man is incapacitated for an amount of time.

I mean if we're being honest here, Necas hasn't shown a single thing to suggest he belongs on the top line once the regular season starts. I'd much rather have McGinn in that position, in the context of Aho and Svech being the other two guys on the ice.

Yep. And I don't hate the notion of having a forechecker with two skilled guy and replicating that with all four lines down the lineup. Granted, McGinn wouldn't be my first choice to pair with Aho, but in the end it's a matter of spreading out the skill on the roster vs. stacking it up. And frankly, in this super unimportant preseason game, I don't really think it matters which one RBA picks.

I agree with that outlook. From my standpoint if Necas can't contribute to the top-6 then he might be better off in Charlotte for a bit. No way to tell if he could possibly mesh with an Aho/Svechnikov type line unless they try it. Low stakes in preaseson.

From a line construction standpoint I see the value in McGinn causing chaos to open up Aho-Svech offensively. After seeing Necas was injured there weren't many better roster options (with Dzingle also out). Better to see if Gauthier/Foegele/Haula fit together as that would be an actual long-term option. Same with Nino-Staal-TT.

Yep, that F-H-G line is pretty important for us if Gauthier makes the roster. In theory their skillsets are pretty complimentary, and they have a clear identity as a crash-bang line that generates momentum. We could run throwaway lines in all other parts of the roster, but gelling that one line in advance of opening night seems worth the effort.

Neither have Haula nor Dzingel before the injury.

Or—based on the best information I can get (NaturalStatTrick) in last year's preseason Zykov and Svechnikov played about 47 minutes at 5-on-5. The Canes scored two goals with Zykov on the ice and zero with Svech. So Svech should have been sent back to juniors.
Skill and production should be considered. Maybe not as much as preseason success and maybe not as much as for veterans, but the argument that only those who "earn" it in the preseason are given key roles is not the full story.

You are pretty darn high if you think Necas (career high: 16 goals in the AHL) is in a competition for the jobs of two proven 20+ goal scoring NHL veterans.

And regardless of what one cherrypicked stat might have told people who weren't watching the games, Svechnikov fully lapped Zykov last preseason, 4 points to 2... when they both made the roster, they started with similar ice time... and then Svech started lapping him in regular-season points as well, at which point Zykov was jettissoned. Everyone saw this happening in real time and understood what was going on. I don't see Necas lapping anybody right now, do you?
