why is Gagne always on the bubble when he keeps getting selected and then playing significant minutes for team Canada? guy gets zero respect...

3. his linemates have been: Sakic/Iginla and Thornton/Nash... played with the TB boys some during the World Cup, right? doesn't seem like someone on the bubble based on that.

That might be part of the problem...he is always playing with top line-mates...it would be nice to see him play with some less stellar players to see what he is all about...the problem with Gagne is that he hasn't done a whole lot in the NHL. The kids is a player - no doubt - but is replaceable if there is another player or two who are "hot" at that time of the year.

a) this is team canada... they are ALL top linemates. they do not take "less stellar players" on the team...

b) i think you're missing the point about Gagne. he may be the best two-way LW in the NHL right now, certainly for his age he deserves consideration in that role. he is a +/- beast, with some offensive skill. what a player like Gagne allows true offensive players to do is... whatever they want. when you got a player like Gagne on your line it frees up you to leave the defensive zone earlier and everything else (ask Rex and Leclair what playing with Handzus meant for the necessity for defensive responsibility...). he's an excellent PK'er as well.

remember... team canada, under Gretzky, is building a "team," not an all-star squad.

In my mind, Gagne, Doan, Yzerman and Smyth are all on the bubble so to speak: each one could easily be replaced by whoever is hot at that time of the year. Yzerman should not be on this team no matter what!! One guy that could be added, if he has a great start to the year, is Sidney Crosby. Imagine a line of Lemieux/Crosby/Bertuzzi.....cool!

According to Gretzky, Yzerman is on the team.

Gagne and Yzerman will be on the team for sure, no way Gretz doesnt pick them, unless they're injured. he's in love with gagne and is really good friends with stevie and already said he'll be on the team if he's ready to go

This is probably not what's going to happen but that's what I'd like to see.

Gagne - Thornton - Nash
Bertuzzi - Sakic - Iginla
Richards - Lecavalier - St-Louis
Smyth - Draper - Doan
Yzerman

Niedermayer - Foote
Pronger - Redden
Regher - Jovo
Boyle

Brodeur
Luongo
Theodore

It's going to be funny to see Brewer left out of the team now that he isn't Lowe's protege anymore.

Defense:
Teppo Numminen
Toni Lydman
Aki Berg
Ossi Väänänen
Jere Karalahti
Sami Salo
Joni Pitkänen
Kimmo Timonen

Centers:
Saku Koivu
Tuomo Ruutu
Olli Jokinen
Mikko Koivu/ Jussi Jokinen

Wings:
Teemu Selanne
Jere Lehtinen
Ville Peltonen
Jukka Hentunen
Timo Pärssinen
Ville Nieminen
Antti Laaksonen
Sami Kapanen
Niklas Hagman

I'd like to see this:

Goalies:
Kari Lehtonen
Vesa Toskala
Miikka Kiprusoff (this is big ice, both Vesa and Kari should be better)

defense:
Sami Salo
Ossi Väänänen
Kimmo Timonen
Teppo Numminen
Toni Lydman
Joni Pitkänen
Jere Karalahti
7 defensemen if I am not mistaken.

centers:
Saku Koivu
Olli Jokinen
Niko Kapanen (Our most consistant producing center on big ice)
Riku Hahl

wings:
Jere Lehtinen
Teemu Selänne
Jukka Hentunen (has been amazing both ways on the national team)
Jarkko Ruutu
Tuomo Ruutu
Sami Kapanen
Jussi Jokinen
Ville Nieminen
Niklas Hagman

Lines something like this...

T.Ruutu - Koivu - Lehtinen
-A new super line? Lehtinen being the centerpiece...
S.Kapanen - O.Jokinen - Selänne
-Speed and technique...
Hentunen - N.Kapanen - J.Jokinen
-Speed, hard work and some skill
Hagman - Hahl - Ruutu/Nieminen (swap 'em once in awhile)
- Some grit :D

Timonen - Numminen - could still outperform any other pairing in the world, like they did in the world cup...

Väänänen - Pitkänen - the new generation of defensemen...

Salo - Lydman/Karalahti - a pairing in which both can do pretty much everything and are special team centerpieces.

PP1

O.J - Koivu - Selänne
Salo - Pitkänen

PP2

S.Kapanen - T.Ruutu - J.Jokinen
Timonen - Numminen

PK1
Lehtinen - N.Kapanen
Väänänen - Lydman

PK2
Hentunen - O.J
Salo - Numminen

I doubt Mogilny will be there.I can't remember the last time he accepted an invitation to play For Russia in International hockey,i think it may have been for their Junior team as the old Soviet Republic in Alaska circa 1989.For some reason he seems to have a resentment on for the Russian hockey federation.

his list leaves out yashin also,i'm sure he'll be named.

As I said. Wishful thinking. When is the last time Russia had a full arsenal including goaltender?

Mogilny will not be there. I forgot Samsonov and Sushinsky, sorry:) I have no use for Yashin but I'm sure he will be there. I rather have a playoff warrior like Slava Kozlov:) He never seems to be invited.

Scratch Yashin and Zhamnov and give me V. Kozlov. Russia needs people with some size that will use it. This is a good team if all accept to play. I think Russia needs to find some better role players though. Too much flash on this squad. They can also drop the human speed machine who can't score in Afinogenov. I would much rather have Slava Kozlov or Kharitonov

V. Kozlov doesn't quite use his size... Definately not better than Yashin and Zhamnov on the national team...

Zetterberg instead of Naslund on Forsberg's wing? :dunno:

See, this is why the US isn't going anywhere. This lineup could very easily be a realistic team, but it isn't going to win.

You have to eliminate Derian Hatcher, Doug Weight, and maybe even Modano if he doesn't perform. Over the hill centers aren't going to perform well enough to help the US defeat Canada.

My team USA:

Tkachuk-Gomez-Guerin
Knuble-Drury-Malone
Pandolfo-Rolston-Konowalchuk
Parrish-Parise-Gionta
extra: Halpern

Rafalski-Martin
Liles-Leopold
Miller-Berard
Extra: Suter

Esche
DiPietro

Problem is, the lineup you posted is the most likely to be fielded, it just isn't the best. Team USA needs to trust it's youth. I think my lineup both will score more goals and is gritty enough to take down Canada.

I like your lineup better. I'm just afraid that USA hockey is going to go with the "old guard" for one last hurrah. The future should start now.

Is Kessel considered old enough to play for team USA? If Crosby can play for team Canada, then Kessel should also be old enough to play for team USA since he's only a couple of months younger than Crosby.

Kessel should get strong consideration for team USA even though he's not a NHLer yet.

Old enough, yeah, theres been figure skaters who were like 15 years old.

I think the word you may be look for is "experienced" ...of that, I'm not sure. He's more than likely good enough.

Gagne is definitely not on the bubble. He is the most underrated forward in the NHL as far as I'm concerned. And when he plays for his country, it's double what he does in the NHL. He may not contribute much offensively, but the way he sees the ice, and his abilities defensively are a must. He's a lock IMO for Team Canada.

Yeah he's so underrated, he had an outstanding 45 points last season and no one noticed!

-Naslund is an all-star, not a 3rd liner. He'll be with Forsberg on one of the top 2 lines no doubt.

-No Sedins? These guys have been some of the better players for Sweden in the past couple of world events, they will be on this team.

Sheesh, even Swede's underrate our Swedish players. :teach:
