Remember in Nagano when Paul was injured and Steve became the star of the game. You really couldn't have written a better script, especially when 1/2 the story was gone and it was turned around (the other 1/2 story was Messier's debut. He got injured over there IIRC).

It wasn't Crawford but Burke that put the kibosh on Steve Kariya if you'll remember. It was one of his first acts as new GM.
He announced to the press that Steve was an exciting and fun player but he wasn't good enough for the NHL.
Steve could easily be tied up in the corner and that's when he was so fun to watch because he could battle out of it like he was the next Theoren Fleury. Unfortunately, he spent all his time doing that. When he was sat and we did better without him the public was convinced.

My cousin has a team picture of him with Steve (or possibly Paul) from their league lacrosse team as kids. It's quite cute.

You confused me greatly with this... I was like neither Steve Kariya nor Messier were on the 1998 Canadian Olympic team! Then I realize you mean the season opening two-game set with Anaheim in Tokyo.

Colour me as still confused...Steve Kariya was still in the NCAA. The Canucks and Ducks played in Yoyogi Arena at the start of the 1997/1998 season. Steve Kariya was in his third of four seasons with the University of Maine, finishing with them in 1998-1999, before signing with the Vancouver Canucks for the 1999/2000 season.

So who the heck is he remembering?

Have we mentioned Jiri Bubla in this thread yet? One of my favorite all-time random Canucks:

— considered one of the greatest Czech defensemen of all time but was only okay in Vancouver because he came over in his 30s at a time when not many guys still played at that age

— Was the oldest skater in the NHL in 1985-86 and still put up 30 points in 46 games

— Father of Canuck Jiri Slegr (who was estranged and took his stepfather's name instead)

— convicted of drug trafficking in Europe shortly after retiring (and while still working as a part-time scout for the Canucks). Apparently he was headed to a meeting with Arthur Griffiths when the Austrian police arrested him.

— put his life back together after his release from prison, with the help of Pat Quinn, and had a contract to clean the Pacific Coliseum for awhile. Later owned a restaurant in the area.

Another guy who multiple teams picked up mid-season when he was toiling in the minors, and he usually turned in decent backup performances. One of three Latvian goaltenders to have played for the Canucks.

he was a decent goalie. too bad crawford didnt like to start him and yanked him out alot.
