I’d venture a third kind where the same notes are played but you get a different output, more clean, better effects all thanks to modern instruments and technology.

I find the better covers are the ones of songs from 40 plus years ago as the new version is bound to produce cleaner sound and sometimes, more interesting effects.

The worst songs to cover are live tracks from a time where the drummer was the sole time keeper and when there were no in-ear monitors to give you access to a metronome as you’re playing. If you now try to recreate those tracks, the only way you can keep their essence and effect, is to replicate their flawed speed, bar by bar. This is why most bands that have covered songs like Do you feel like we do, have failed.
I know you're not a fan but listen to this one, a cover from @50 years ago. The original was sung by a legend. Raw and filled with emotion. I've included it. Now listen to the cover and hear an amazing voice doing amazing things. The wording is so much in synch, she's scary good.

I've watched Janis many times but as much as I love you, Miley and her twangy helium voice on Party in the USA has made me flee her forever. I can't take her and I know it's not fair, she improved. But, I also know you could have driven the same point you just made using someone other than Miley. I'll take Charlie Brown singing Christmas carols over her. Sorry bud.

Might have to add it as a plausible plot line on this list:

khruko1xuk481.png

Semi-full disclosure: my daughter is an actress and got her first principal role in a Hallmark movie. While on set, she told me that they had people working on your face and makeup, fixing hair and using spray net on every take. There were several of them pouncing like ninjas to administer chemical products. There’s a reason those characters look so prim and plasticky.

Sorry Runner, missed this one some how, guess I was distracted by the most unusual sounds and had to check them out and it got lost in the shuffle:dunno:

If they make one like it,make sure you get your cut!

I see, well from what I hear being under contract with Hallmark is not too bad, decent base and however the rest of the contract was negotiated. Better to be under a contract than not anyways. Not all that familiar with Hallmark, but they shoot primarily in North America but believe they do some remote shoots as well, nice to travel on someone else's dime can not be too bad. Sure many knock Hallmark, but a gig is better than no gig and may lead to better roles down the road. She's youngish I gather and better to start somewhere than be a big star and then sink to some levels where I feel embarrassed for former starts doing terrible crap. I wonder at times what compels ''stars'' to do some of this hack crap.

I'm somewhat familiar with the workings of the industry, and you gotta look great! Is she still keen on being an actor? not disenchanted how it operates? Some very long days and a lot of waiting around. Are you and her mother ok with her doing this, none of my business but I ask nonetheless. Does she want to be a star star or just a busy working actor? Some supporting actors are busy and make a mint without all the paparazzi and that.Good luck to her and you guys, break a leg!

Just my 2 cents but as good as a cover Miley did,it can not capture what you already noted. Janis's version is pure, true.

That's right, Janis is irreplaceable, one of the many greats from that era I was fortunate enough to have seen live. Today, even at my age, if I wasn't so screwed health wise, I'd pay big bucks to go see Miley, but no one else.
She did a version of I'll stand by you recently from the Ryman for an LGBT fundraiser, and just hearing the starting chords brings me to my knees, every f***in time. No one has ever done that, no song has ever moved me so, even the original, and I can't figure out why. I've listened to thousands of thousands of songs, in every style imaginable; some really move me especially classical, but nothing comes close.

Thanks for your kind reply. She’s a full time actress (as much as you could be in Canada, you always need supplemental income) who has been studying the craft and has been on sets since her early teens. It has taken her many years to earn a speaking role. She was an extra for the longest time until someone figured out that she could actually talk on camera. A stunning discovery for all of us.

This was her career choice. All I really wished for and suggested is that she earn a university degree and did in another discipline. I’ve always taught her that you’re a successful actor if you can make a living at it. Doing that job is the biggest payoff as she gets to do something she loves. The star thing is not something she worries about, she just wants to know where her next gig will come from.

She landed principal roles in two other series and is now on the radar of casting agents. Took her over 15 years for that to happen but she took no shortcuts, worked hard and never quit. It’s an industry of failure as you’ll not win the vast majority of your auditions. And it’s also an industry of nepotism but we don’t know anyone so it took more time to get to where she is but she doesn’t owe anyone anything. There’s a lot of freedom in that.

Several other actors she met along the way gave up. Some couldn’t handle the pressure of being on a set and delivering on cue. One such actress became a hairdresser on movie sets when my daughter saw her again after many years. She was happy to have found what she liked to do. Other actors were tired of being extras or getting bit roles and gave up.

My daughter had the right attitude from the start. She never let a failed audition bother her, she just moves on to the next thing. She keeps working hard, but I’m only really proud of her cause she’s a good person who cares about others. That she found her calling, all the better however it’s not a great source of revenue. I often tease her by telling her that she took a vow of poverty, lol.

You're more than welcome! I often surprise many people by being kind,it's a gross misconception that it's beyond my capacity.:whaaa?:

Some people freeze when on camera, radio or stage due to shyness which is not a trait best suited for aspiring talent. Had to do a few things a few times and no probelmo. Not so easy for some though.

Offspring seldom follow a path parents desire, just hope that they do have success in whatever they choose and enjoy it.

Yes the casting world is suspicious at times and it's obvious by many of the performances we are subjected to,just stay away from the couch:nod: Hopefully she will get a good gig sooner than later that is more consistent and reliable.

Just go to L.A if you want to see failed aspiring performers and many that did have a legit role for some time. So easy to go broke by over indulging and buying unnecessary trappings and unable to maintain the facade of being a star.

Sounds like you guys did a good job nurturing her and keeping her grounded, not that common of thing it seems nowadays. So similar to garage band type of thing eh? In some cases you'd have a more luxurious lifestyle had one enter the monastery.

Yes you were indeed fortunate to see her,a benefit of being, you know...........well seasoned.
Sorry to hear that your health is not what you'd like it to be,any possibility for improvement?
Do shows not have wheelchair accessibility for some, could be an option.
Post the song in question,I want to see it for myself por favor. Music can and does have impact no doubt and can relate a little. Years ago we attended a small violin recital and the man playing had just about everyone in tears, it did put a bit of a hamper on the osoo bucco we were having at the time though.

Looks like Youtube took it down, but I found it Audio only.

If you want to watch the whole concert with Spanish subs, here you go.
It's an excellent show. She puts Madonna to shame with three of her hits.

A very bad joke and it's not funny at all. The campus where Janis was studying named her Ugliest man on Campus.

The last joke of George Harisson, rip ex Beatle. George was re-recording All Things Must Pass, he was almost dying from cancer and he took the time to elaborate that joke. A joke that needed some work and schedule.

George Harrison had a wicked sense of humor. He was buddies with the guys from Monty Python, after all. George knew how to have a good time, even during periods of his life that were especially grueling. His life was dark sometimes, but he always knew how to laugh, especially if it was at someone else’s expense. So it’s not surprising to hear that George pulled an elaborate prank on his fellow rocker, Phil Collins.

Collins was a huge Beatles fan. So he signed up to be a session musician for George Harrison when he was recording his first solo album outside The Beatles, All Things Must Pass, in 1970. At only 19, Collins got to work with one of his heroes.
“Our manager got a call from Ringo Starr’s chauffeur, who said they needed a percussionist, and he suggested me,” Collins told Louder Sound. “So I went down to Abbey Road, and Harrison was there and Ringo and Billy Preston and Klaus Voormann and Phil Spector, and we started routing the song.
“No one told me what to play, and every time they started the song, Phil Spector would say: ‘Let’s hear guitar and drums,’ or ‘Let’s hear bass and drums.’ And I’m not a conga player, so my hands are starting to bleed. And I’m cadging cigarettes off Ringo – I don’t even smoke, I just felt nervous.”
Phil Spector finally told the conga players to play, but Collins had his mic off, and everyone laughed. Then everyone disappeared, and they told Collins to leave. “A few months later I buy the album from my local record shop, look at the sleeve notes and I’m not there. And I’m thinking: ‘There must be some mistake!’ But it’s a different version of the song, and I’m not on it.”

Years later, George pulled a prank on Collins
In 2001, George was remastering All Things Must Pass as he was dying from cancer. It wasn’t all doom and gloom that last year of George’s life. In fact, he had the energy and the humor left in him to perform one last elaborate prank, and Collins was the recipient.
“Cut to years later,” Collins continued to Louder Sound. “I bought [former F1 driver] Jackie Stewart’s house. And Harrison was a friend of Jackie’s, and Jackie told me George was remixing All Things Must Pass. And he said: ‘You were on it, weren’t you?’ And I said: ‘Well I was there.'” Collins couldn’t have known what was coming next following that conversation.
“Two days later a tape’s delivered from George Harrison with a note saying: ‘Could this be you?’ I rush off and listen to it, and straight away I recognise it. Suddenly the congas come in – too loud and just awful. And at the end of the tape you hear George Harrison saying: ‘Hey, Phil, can we try another without the conga player?’
“So now I know, they didn’t go off to watch TV, they went somewhere and said: ‘Get rid of him,’ cos I was playing so badly. And then Jackie rings and says: ‘I’ve got someone here to speak to you,’ and puts George on and he says: ‘Did you get the tape?’ And I said: ‘I now realise I was fired by a Beatle.’ And he says: ‘Don’t worry, it was a piss-take. I got Ray Cooper to play really badly and we dubbed it on. Thought you’d like it!’ I said: You f***ing bastard!”

Thanks for your support and encouragement. I‘m not one to complain but this condition is really taxing both physically and mentally. I guess I needed to rant to myself.
One of the weird side effects of this particular disorder is compulsive behaviours not usually associated to me: Gambling and spending. I never gambled other than lottery tickets and spending? Me the cheapskate? Well it wasn’t long before I became an Amazon junkie, and began spending money on man toys like my Yamaha, when I already had a Martin, my camera, plus a myriad of smaller stuff for my apt. Then things started going out of hand; my big screen projector home theatre set up, which I love btw, paired with my Sony headphones.
I seem to have run out of things to buy, finally. I figure, make my life as enjoyable as possible for the remaining time, get high and watch videos and shows. It seems listening to really loud music with the headphones greatly improves my mobility, strange.
I also acquired psychic powers, just ask Angus.

If this isn't the best song Billy Idol has ever done, it's right up there with his best work. And it's completely different from what you'd have expected. If you haven't heard it, enjoy:

I'm no music connoisseur but can't say that it would be close to being his best.I was/am a fan of Idol and any any track on Vital Idol epitomizes what Billy Idol was/did. This track, fine as it is,but get Cohen,Isaac vibes more, not that that is a bad thing.imo

It's definitely a departure from his much earlier material, but I suppose decades later and less inspired from ''recreational'' influences would alter ones creativity and yield a different product. Used to hear his early material in loud party type clubs with dancing and now the new contribution is totally acceptable to play at a dinner soiree, times change eh? Good for him he kept plugging away, fine tune.
