Better than air drumming.

Speaking of Rush, my son (prog guitarist) has finally put together a band and their first cover is YYZ. I can see why a ton of work was involved and how there are so few covers of it out there.

After absorbing copious amount of content from various posts ,threads etc, and re-watching the attached clips, I've concluded that the performances warrants a 8.892:nod:

Hey @Runner77 ,got a question for you as a one time or current drummer, and hope it doesn't annoy you but have you or have you seen rock drummers use many ''sticks'' during one song? common? Of course you have to isolate the drummer here, and it's not the best recording, sorry about that. You know who I'm talking about, some friends think he's Arnold Palmer.
That being said, still enjoy the enthusiasm from George at the end.

If we’re talking switching types of sticks from wood, to mallets to brushes, takes a song that has the type of build ups and valleys that lend themselves to the use of each type, which is not most songs.

You can typically get the job done with maple wood sticks. I always had a large stick holder that I attached to two anchor points on my floor tom, making them easily accessible in the event of an untimely incident.

If we’re talking resilience, I’ve played shows for many hours using the same 5A maple sticks with plasticated tip and never had a stick break. You can occasionally have one slip out of your hand but it’s not a common occurrence unless you’re Peter Criss and you like to do fancy twirls as part of your act.

As a drummer, there are certain pranks you can engage in thanks to your sticks. Whenever one of my band members wandered too close to my kit as we were performing a song, I would slide one of my drumsticks between their legs and we’d all crack up watching them squirm and struggle to maintain their composure.

Sometimes we lose sight of how much work goes into creating content online.

This drummer I follow on Instagram offered great perspective as he explains how drummers from a prior generation that made its inroads via live gigs look down upon those who are massively invested online:

Thanks ,appreciate the insight. I have to admit when seeing live performances,I do not focus on any one individual unless it's solo and thought perhaps it might occur without witnessing it. Drums solo, sure, seen it done by a few.
What makes the drum sticks break most often? seen a few snap and they toss them to the crowd, almost got nailed once and did get Paul Stanleys pick to the head back in the day.

Sounds like some fun times, kind of makes me wish I was in your band and I would not stray far from the drum kit:naughty::jk:

Times change, easier to get exposure now then back then. Then you had to have a decent band, hope to land gigs and then perhaps get some more attention from a record company or a spotter.

Takes a lot of punishment for a maple stick to give. I’m guessing some drummers get too attached to a pair and aren’t mindful of wear and tear combined with a lot of rim, cowbell and other hard surfaces you might angle your stick on.

You would have loved to be in our band. When it was past midnight, the crowd would get visibly drunk and that’s when the singer would replace the words to standards with porn lyrics he’d make up on the spot and that the rest of us repeated as back up vocals. No one ever noticed or complained.

Does cringe qualify as shook?

Not sure which version is more cringe-worthy,Twains or this one:pullhair:

Céline wins this by a mile. Shania's version is awesome, with Union Station backing her up and Alison doing the high harmony. Great slide guitar, they made it their own version and it's better than the original.

Not a fan of the original version either, worst track on the album imo. but I'll take that any day of the week over any covers I have heard, but to each their own.

We knew of this other band whose lead singer was a matinee idol. These guys were hot on the wedding circuit. The singer was such a charmer that he’d usually entice one of the women at the head table and would fog up a car during band breaks. More often than not he’d end up with the mother of the bride.

Whenever he was late to return from the parking lot, his band mates always knew how to find him. There was always the car that was rocking or that was fogged up or both.

Classy! and one wonders where all the charming gents went?:dunno: of course it does take two to tango doesn't it. At least it was done willingly as opposed to the real world that is subjected to heinous behavior.

Can imagine that same philandering mother or relative of the bride a few hours earlier, dispensing advice on the trials and tribulations of marriage.

On one occasion, I was told that the galloping singer had pursued a tryst with the mother of a bride. At one point, this lady got sick and ended up at the hospital and lo and behold, Mr. Shameless Charmer showed up to visit her in her room, with flowers and candy. And the Charmer was married to boot.

There are two types of cover songs; those that make it their own original version, still recognisable but otherwise different, and those that mimic he original to perfection, like the Russian Chicago tribute band. Anything else is usually crap.

Might have to add it as a plausible plot line on this list:

khruko1xuk481.png

Semi-full disclosure: my daughter is an actress and got her first principal role in a Hallmark movie. While on set, she told me that they had people working on your face and makeup, fixing hair and using spray net on every take. There were several of them pouncing like ninjas to administer chemical products. There’s a reason those characters look so prim and plasticky.

I’d venture a third kind where the same notes are played but you get a different output, more clean, better effects all thanks to modern instruments and technology.

I find the better covers are the ones of songs from 40 plus years ago as the new version is bound to produce cleaner sound and sometimes, more interesting effects.

The worst songs to cover are live tracks from a time where the drummer was the sole time keeper and when there were no in-ear monitors to give you access to a metronome as you’re playing. If you now try to recreate those tracks, the only way you can keep their essence and effect, is to replicate their flawed speed, bar by bar. This is why most bands that have covered songs like Do you feel like we do, have failed.
