Best generic party rap song I’ve heard in a while:

Mike Dimes sounds like what white TV execs would name a rapper on CSI who’s been looked into for a grizzly crime that he did not commit.

Car Bomb is freaking amazing. It's hard to be creative in this day and age in this genre, but they really managed to hit this one out of the park.

And from the covid thread, a certain discussion reminded me of this absolute gem of a tune (and album for that matter) from our very own Martyr:

Monster mash?

What’s the deodorant situation like on that stage? These excessively costumed guys usually emit a smell of arm pits.

I’m missing out on a lot of good music just cause I can’t stand these Cookie Monster singers. I wish they’d release the same tracks minus the ogre from a bad horror movie.
This album is mostly clean vocals

It took me a while to adapt to harsh vocals myself. My gateway bands were Lamb of God and Behemoth in high school (who I eventually got to see perform together on the Slayer farewell tour, was sick)

The best advice I can give is, just pretend the vocals are an instrument themselves. Just follow the melody. Pretend it's a discordant guitar or something.

Thanks so much for that. I guess I’m too used to prog and heavy rock where the lyrics mean something (like Genesis) or that are a huge complement to a fast paced song (like with some Deep Purple cuts).

What’s the rationale when it comes to singing incomprehensible lyrics that come across as diabolical screams — must be to enhance the whole death aspect.

I attended the Gigantour at the BC many years ago and the closing act back then was Dream Theater. Those type of demonic vocals were not as common back then.

I really appreciate the suggestions and will look into them. I’ve also read that those throaty type of singers tend to damage their vocal chords early cause of the demands of the style they’re singing so that leads to short careers but doesn’t stop them all from doing it.

I’m just not a fan of inarticulate sorts and gibberish.

Probably has to do with prolonged exposure to toxic Neanderthals like Bergevin and Therrien.

Gojira's another good clean vocals band. Their newer stuff is more progressive and even their early stuff the vocals are more of an angry snarl/shout than screaming.

I guess you know about Mastodon? They are absolutely amazing in my opinion. Raw, catchy, groovy, they have it all!

The third cut is more up my alley. Compelling lyrics with a strong message, melodic aspects, build ups, strong riffing.

Also, exceptional imagery concepts in all their clips, esp. the first one.

Reading YouTube comments about the first two cuts, I was cracking up. Users were arguing not about singing, but about the quality of screams.

I’ve enjoyed lots of different types of prog. One of the most underrated for me was the PFM album, Chocolate Kings. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with it on account of the singer’s heavy foreign accent, which could have been avoided by the band only using him on Italian songs. But no, his thick pronunciations had to be there for some reason.

Here’s a representative cut from that album, and if you like this, the rest of it delivers on the same basis:
