Richer got 50 in the 80's. Bernie Nicholls got a 70 goals season in that decade. Not saying we should compare CC to the Habs all time great though

You don't find it odd that all the 70, 80, 90 goal seasons all happened exclusively between 1970 and 1995, which also corresponds with the greatest expansion of the league, going from 6 teams in 1966 to 26 teams in 1995, diluting the talent level, leaving the most talented players with much more open ice?

The 90's is when the talent pool got expanded to include much more Europeens, which slowly brought the concentration of talent level to the pre-expansion era. Both hockey and training became more sophisticated in that era, also helping to bridge the gap.

This over-reverence of past players based on contextual statistics is assinine.

Interestingly, IMO, it's almost impossible to pull out a decade of solid D core without a real number 1 in it. There are two instances as this moment that contradict my position: Canes and Islanders. They are built to spread the workload evenly through 3 pairs. If we pull that off, I'll be happy. I always prefer top heavy D cores, but there is a way to make work a spread out D core, even though it's a rare occurance.
Both those teams have a #1 d. Burns and Dobson. Dobson should be getting more ice time than the rest of the d on the Islanders. He does get most of the pp time though.

Guhle realistically looks like a McDonagh with maybe a touch better skating.

It would not be dreaming to think Xhekaj could be as good as Sergachev.

Matheson can realistically be a good 4th D.

We are one Hedman away from a cup contending d-corps, and we have 2 years to try to find that guy, either from within or from the outside.
2 years to find a bonafide top 5 in the NHL for a decade type of defenseman? Good luck with that…

After 15 games:

Forwards
- Suzuki is on pace for 104 pts (55G, 49A) in 82 GP
- Caufield is on pace for 87 pts (49G, 38A) in 82 GP
- Dach is on pace for 77 pts (22G, 55A) in 82 GP
- Slafkovsky is on pace for 23 pts (all goals) in 77 GP

Defense
- Guhle is on pace for 38 pts (5G, 33A) in 82 GP
- Xhekaj is on pace for 22 pts (11G, 11A) in 82 GP
- Harris in on pace for 22 pts (all assists) in 82 GP

All of these guys are 23 years old and younger (Suzuki is the elder statesman of this group).

Among the vets we hope to trade at some point this year:

- Monahan is on pace for 43 pts (16G, 27A) in 82 GP
- Hoffman is on pace for 31 goals & 37 pts in 80 GP (largely thanks to his 4 goals in 3 games recently)

And to a lesser successful rate:

- Drouin with 26 assists in 79 GP
- And we won't even mention Dadonov.

Burns and Dobson joined a Dcore that was established prior to their arrival and fill a role. They are not « fillers », but my point is that both the Isles and Canes established a functional workload since forever now. You can remove them and the D core would still function.

The NHL wasn't a development league under Bergevin his coaches said it and he said it more than once. OBTUSE is my best description for it.
I get a kick out of the guys pumping the maestro's tires. I guarantee that this team would be no where near where we are no had he not been fired. "It's on the player" what a stupid take.

I just listened to msl conference, and when talking about dach, he said he absorbing learning and then goes to say we coach and teach them everyday. This is exactly what was missing from this club before, we had a bunch of dino coaches that coached systems instead of developing individual players.

Fact is, I'm sure MSL does borrow from the old school and the Habs analytic department has been overhauled, which points to the actual solution, which is central to most problems: balance.
To my knowledge, we did not even have any analytics people on the payroll with the prior regime after Bergevin chose not to renew the sole analytics expert who worked for the team early in his mandate. Gorton had to build it from scratch.

Wifi quarterbacking the pp second unit was a breath of fresh air and he didn’t even look out of place! The kids going to be a stud if he keeps developing well!

When I first saw Guhle last year, I thought Serge Savard, all-round D.

When I saw Xhekaj at camp fresh from Costco also last year, I thought Larry Robinson, awkward, strong and with offence.

But I am trying to calm myself down and am saying McDonagh and Sergachev now, not so secretly hoping our young guys will actually be better than the two Tampa guys.

But we still need a Lapointe/Hedman PP trigger man.

So many tough decisions to make in the near future!! Starting with who to scratch when Matheson and Slaf comes back next game,
Also, a decision needs to be made regading Montembeault's usage. While he's hot, why not use him more than 33% of the games?

They watch too much Joel Bouchard on TVA. The spin continues. What I don't get is how easily 3 historical franchise lows get ignored as if it had no bearing whatsoever on his legacy.

Bergevin was beyond old school, while everyone else was finding out ways to win, the Maestro was playing hunches, and riding Price like he was Stormy Daniels......

It amazed me how stupid the organization got, with MB and MT holding court....and Condo Jeffy no where to be found...

Saying we don't have a real number 1 doesn't make it true. How about we let the kids continue their development paths before we make that assumption.

His passes are tape to tape even using his backand.
