To NYI: Alex Galchenyuk

To MTL: John Tavares

Tavares is the better Player but is a UFA at the end of next season. He could command Toews, Kopitar money (especially if seeing playoff success after the trade).

Galchenyuk is RFA at end of this season, but has two more seasons before hitting full UFA eligibility. I Assume he would sign a long term extension in the $7 million range with NYI.

I think on its face Montreal adds, but the money ($3 million per year) and prospect of losing Tavares for nothing in year's time could push the dial back to even.

When was the last time a team let a franchise player walk?

Would rather do Tavares for Price if we could somehow guarantee a resign and that is not even much of an interest to us.

Acquiring Tavares doesn't make a whole lot of sense because they won't be have the cap space to re-sign him after Price gets his new contract.

Or we can wait until he becomes a free agent and have a filthy top 6, don't think we will have enough cap space to sign him though

Neither team does this deal.

NYI don't get enough of a return.

MTL simply can't fit Tavares into their plans cap-wise.

Probably Phil Esposito to the Rangers and Gretzky to the Kings are the only two that come to mind. At least in the Esposito trade it was truly a hockey trade that worked for both teams . . . Ratelle and Park for Esposito and Vadnais.

Actually, I wrote "let a franchise player walk".

If you are talking about via free agency . . .

Didn't Messier leave Edmonton via FA?

Scott Neidermayer is a HOF defenseman. Maybe not quite a franchise player but pretty darn close.

Ron Francis was certainly a franchise player, just look at his career stats.

And Scott Stevens was a #1 defenseman, he's pretty close too.

Next time someone makes a Tavares trade thread, can they at least put his name in the title so I don't waste my ****ing time opening it?

Thanks.

So basically, the answer is "a long time ago".

At this point in time, there may be no player more important to the existence of their franchise than Tavares. Islanders have a hard enough time retaining their fan base as it is. Losing the face of the franchise, the only beacon of hope in decades of misery, would be absolutely catastrophic. They will not trade him. They will not let him walk. They will pay him dearly. He might even get a Lemieux type contract including a piece of the team.

That's more likely the outcome.

Proposal makes little to no sense from a Habs perspective either.

Montreal needs a 2nd line C above all and doing this does not change that. Galchenyuk is doing very well as a #1 C right now and will only get better.

We wouldn't be able to pay Price and Tavares the monster contracts they deserve come 2018.

Seriously

1. Underpayment for Tavares
2. "No"
3. "Well we'll just sign him as a free agent then and you'll get nothing lol"

Every single thread.
