What is with these 2 teams and trading/sharing Defenseman? Just call it the Francis Bouillon effect
It may surprise you, but currently there are just 11 RHDs who are 23 and younger in the whole NHL. People may not like Barron, but he is such rare commodity that 4th is definitely not enough.
still.. Barron didnt get anywhere near that time in mtl, nor has he solidified his presence on a third pairing.Carrier has been replaced by a tweener (Blankenburg) and he has outplayed Carrier this season. Carrier has just not been great this season. I didnt want to extend him to begin with. Carrier may be better than Blankenburg but he hasnt shown it this season. I for one am glad to be out of that contract. He got his time on ice because our RHD at the NHL level were Josi playing offhand, Fabbro who was waived because the coach refused to use him, and Schenn. He got time by default
Avs didn't give up on him. That was a 'win it now' type move for them.Barron just turned 23 and already 2 teams gave up on him
Looks like a win now type of trade. Makes no sense because who knows if the other RHD prospects end up busting just like Barron. Its not like Barron is that much older.Yeah, it's the first i see a GM make a trade during a rebuild.
It's must be getting really hot in the kitchen.
It's not a 'win it now' type move. This doesn't make the Canadiens likely to make the playoffs.Looks like a win now type of trade. Makes no sense because who knows if the other RHD prospects end up busting just like Barron. Its not like Barron is that much older.
Seems like something that should have been done for Justin Barron. It's not a 'win it now' type move. This doesn't make the Canadiens likely to make the playoffs.
The Habs right side D is so bad that it's affecting the whole team. You want your prospects to be able to develop properly and you need some vets to help with that. They had to get somebody who could absorb hard minutes and shelter younger players. They don't have that now and it's hurting the development of their players. This adds some stability to one of the youngest bluelines in the league. It's a bridge type move that works to help guys like RB and Mailloux when they join the team in the next couple of seasons.
Right. It was the wrong environment for him. He needs ice and veteran support. He wasn't going to get that in Montreal. They're too young a team and have a bunch of other young RDs trying to crack the lineup.Seems like something that should have been done for Justin Barron.
It's ok to admit that Montreal lost the Lekh trade. It's kind of cringe to keep commenting how a 2nd was part of a trade to move up in a draft.
Barron is still worth giving a chance. He has the skills, size and athleticism of an NHL player. Needs to work on his game. I hope he gels well with the coaches there.
Carrier is a perfect fit for Montreal. He just needs to work hard and people will love him. That's all you really need to do to be liked in Montreal.
How is it cringe to talk about what the Canadiens received in the trade? The 2nd was part of the deal. I'm sure the Avalanche didn't want to give it up, it's not like you just throw in a 2nd round pick for nothing. It's ok to admit that Montreal lost the Lekh trade. Still, it's not like the 2nd round pick gave Hage directly - it allowed the Habs to trade up from 26 to 21, so if people want to play "trade tree", including Hage also meant including the Monahan rental by the Jets. How is it cringe to talk about what the Canadiens received in the trade? What's cringe is seeing people try to talk as though the 2nd round pick wasn't part of the transaction and should just be ignored because... reasons.
Doesn't matter. It was an asset that we leveraged in a great trade for Hage. It was part of the original Lek deal.Still, it's not like the 2nd round pick gave Hage directly - it allowed the Habs to trade up from 26 to 21, so if people want to play "trade tree", including Hage also meant including the Monahan rental by the Jets.
A 2nd and Barron was more than fair value for Lehkonen at the time of the deal.
What happened after is irrelevant.
Both teams "won".
The difference is Lehk still probably fits in the recent first rounder plus a second value bracket. Him playing with a guy who nearly hit 130 points doesn't bump his trade value to insane heights.Things are mostly judged in retrospect...so here we are.
Just as an example, MacKinnon said he’d take another team friendly deal (on the precipice of the cap increasing), Avs fans grumbled because 12.6 was the highest in the league. Now, it seems quite reasonable. Again, things are mostly judged in retrospect.

Every team knows he's not going to pace for 60+ playing with their center instead of MacKinnon. 30 games into the season mack already has outscored what lehk will in the entire season, or ever had for that matter.
I say this as someone who didn't want to trade him and wasn't iffy on Barron from the start. A comparable now would be Oliver bonk and a second, which I doubt many teams would pay for Lehk unless they thought he was the missing piece.

Then include Monahan every time you mention Hage.Doesn't matter. It was an asset that we leveraged in a great trade for Hage. It was part of the original Lek deal.
If you're going to evaluate a trade, why would you omit something like that? Doesn't make sense.
You're comparing a signing and a trade.
Habs were not going to keep Lehkonen and traded him instead of letting him leave. They got good value for him. It's not that deep.
That's like saying the Kulak trade is a steal because we used that pick for Hutson, but the same trade would have been a bust if they drafted Suzdalev instead?
It’s not a hard fight to argue why it made sense for Montreal to trade him. It made sense, no doubt. But this guy has turned out to be better than Giroux. I don’t want to dump on the Habs. Agreed that it made sense to deal him given the circumstance of the Habs. But that still doesn’t change the timing element of this. In 2022 alone, this guy scored the game over goals in the WCF and the SCF.
Either way... both teams won here. Canadiens at minimum got an asset that helped get them Hage. And they'll also get a lot of value out of Carriere. Sucks that Baron didn't work out... but that doesn't make it a bad trade, even in retrospect.Things are mostly judged in retrospect...so here we are.

If we're talking about the Monahan trade... sure. That's not what's being discussed. Then include Monahan every time you mention Hage.
