Confirmed Trade: [MTL/NSH] Alexandre Carrier for Justin Barron

Trade worked out very well. Carrier buys time for Reinbacher / Mailloux. He was needed to help stabilize the D-corps. He's a very steady dman, puckover and skater. Nothing flashy - just steady and reliable.

We need to dump Savard asap and hopefully one of Reinbacher / Mailloux can make the jump next season. Maybe find a veteran bottom pairing option to replace Savard.

Carrier was excellent in the first +/- 35-40 games he was with Habs.

But lately, he was showing signs of fatigue.

He was less efficient and was turning the puck a lot more. Winning less board battles and moving the puck with less precision.

He's been used a lot here, for a 5'11" 175 pds guy.
But he surely was a pretty reliable def for us down the playoff race stretch.

One of his issues in Nashville was staying healthy and the other was when he hit the playoffs and play got quicker and more physical his game came apart a bit.

Will be interesting to see how he looks this year vs the Vancouver series last season.

Always interesting to get the point of view of someone who saw a player over an extended period, before he joined our team.
Thanks.

Exactly. "A bit" slow, and "a bit" small, might get by in the regular season? Well, sometimes it did when he was with the Preds, sometimes it didn't. But there wasn't really anywhere to go when games got harder.

Again, I just come back to he was "over-rated" in a way in a Nashville, as opposed to actually being a bad player or anything. He was a good player... if used within his limitations (which was a little rare in Nashville). But still a good organizational asset. Nice success story in terms of the way he worked himself up from the minors. You root for guys like that. He never stinted on effort, that's for sure. He always made the most of what skills he possessed.

But then at the end of the day... I still wouldn't undo the trade from the Preds perspective. Barron has lots of warts. I'm not sure if he'll be a long-term player or not either. I'm leaning probably "not". But it was worth a try, since I don't think Carrier was really doing anything other than "taking up space" for us - space which a tweener like Nick Blankenburg was eminently capable of filling just as well, cheaper.
:dunno:
