Hughes gave Baron away for free.

Barron hockey IQ is a box of rocks. People get entranced by the smooth skating and athleticism. Carrier as an undersized third pairing guy will still be more useful than Barron.

Habs get the more useful player but have to take on the contract…which isn’t great. But probably not a big deal for a Montreal team in the middle of a rebuild.

Yikes, no.

Totally different style to Savard and cannot play the crease clearing role that Savard does.

Carrier is an undersized, 3rd pairing defenseman who doesn’t really make mistakes and doesn’t do anything of significance. Can log minutes for a bad team. Strong shot but rarely uses it.
So basically what Savard is for us now, got it

Well it seems that we realy regret the Kovacevic trade and need to put a RD on the third row. It looks like a lot of terms and I do believe that is the reason why he's out of Nashville.

Both guys need a change, all risks are for the Habs, not a lot for the Preds but win 4M$ which is a lot theses days.

Win Nashville

but you were mad right
Eh, not at the idea of it. I didn't think anyone would trade a 1st for Monahan because it was so obviously an idiotic thing to do. I was more disgusted once the trade happened. Never anywhere near as mad as that guy, who got so incensed at the idea or losing Barron on waivers that he thought everything I said in that thread made me sound like an idiot.

I really liked Carrier in juniors. People were saying that he'd grew up to 6'3 because his parents were tall. Sadly never happened, but I was really miffed when the Habs didn't pick him in 2015 with the picked used on Lukas Vejdemo.

Barron had some skill, a good shot and could move the puck, but was scared of being scared.

Carrier been pretty bad so not going to miss him for the Preds. Barron is much younger and bigger so I guess that’s a win for us. But either way, just a change of scenery trade for both I believe.

Sometimes bigger defenseman take more time to develop so who knows. We know what carrier is though and he’s not getting any better.

Montreal just loves french Canadians lol
At least they have to trade for them these days and they don’t just get them anymore… no wonder so many cups lol
Carrier had a huge drop off from last year?

Question: Did he fall down alot for you guys?

The contract is what I hate about this deal.

With the cap rising so much next year, and likely the year after that too, Carrier's contract is the least of Montreal's problems.

And this trade is a good one for both teams. Both Carrier and Barron needed a change of scenery, and both teams needed different things.

Montreal needs more veteran presence on their blueline to help insulate their young guys, moreso considering that the writing is on the wall regarding Savard's fate at the trade deadline, and potentially Matheson's too if some rumor-mongers are to be believed.

Carrier has had a rough 2024-2025, alongside most of the Predators' players, but he is still good defensively, disrupts passing lanes well, and will be a very responsible 3rd-pairing right defenseman for the length of his contract with the Canadiens.

Maybe with the change of scenery Carrier regains some of his magic from 2021-2022. He could also fail to make an impact and crater completely, but to the Canadiens the risk is minimal considering they still have a lot of prospects coming through their defensive pipeline in the coming years to offset the loss of a not-developing Barron, and more than enough cap space to go around.

Nashville on the other hand just wanted more cap flexibility and to shed a somewhat disgruntled player's salary.

They also do well in this trade by acquiring a much-younger defenseman than Carrier with a lot of nice tools in Barron, but also one who hasn't improved much at all in the last 2 years. Thing is that Barron is still very young and could end up being much better down the line than he currently is.

So yeah, I actually think this trade is nice for both teams with more potential on the Predators' front for the trade to end up a winning one.

EDIT:
Was it this summer Habs fans wanted a high draft pick for Barron? A 1st or 2nd I believe and now he’s traded for a depth defenceman.

This Summer the most people asked for Barron would have been a 2nd.

The time where Barron's value was at its highest was in the Summer of 2023, after a very good rookie year.

Thing is that Barron didn't develop much after that rookie season and so his value progressively got worse until he was just now traded for Carrier.
