To make the playoffs as a wildcard team, talent is a lot more important than experience.
The young players on that team are not regular players, we're talking about high-end prospects. The talent Demidov, Slafkovsky, Hutson, Reinbacher, Mailloux, etc. bring far out trumps their lack of experience.

The team has a much better chance of making the playoffs by having those inexperienced, but highly talented prospects than by having average, but experienced players.

The leafs finished last in the league in 2015-2016, then made the playoffs the following year on the back of 3 rookies (Matthews, Nylander, and Marner).
I like the Habs chances to be in the playoff mix next year but I don't think I agree with your premise. It seems more common for young talented teams to keep failing when people think they should be ready vs. young teams getting into the playoffs before most think they're ready. See Buffalo, Ottawa, Detroit currently.

I expected (wanted) the stutzle treatment for slafkovsky. I expected 8M per year and he got 7.6 so I'm pretty happy about that. Some seems to forgot Slaf still has one year left on his ELC.

He wasn't featured much offensively on the first 1/3 of the season and turned the corner in december. I don't expect less than 65-70 pts IF he stays healthy next season. 7.6M is about the salary of a 75 pts player if we go by the old rule of 1 pts = 100K.

I don't think he will have a hard time surpassing the 75 points mark several times during the time of his deal as the team around him improves as well as himself as a player.

My mans was on the 4th line tonight and pacing for 4 goals, this is a tough scene atm

I hope you're right. I'm a Slaf fan but we can never know for sure. GMs tend to give those like candies nowadays. I think I would be more conservative. lol
This is the final year of his elc. So hasn’t even started the new contract yet.

Montreal front loaded it at $9 mill per in real money in the early years so in the event Montreal decides on a buyout before he is 26, they will need to eat the extra $5 mill or whatever of higher cap vs cap in the early years. But the 1/3 buyout gives teams some flexibility in the event the player completely goes sideways on them.

player cashed out and no longer cares enough to try; a tale as old as time.

5 games with 0 points should ring some alarm bells

He doesn't play like last year, he doesn't use his body to create separation or finish his check, his positioning and decision making are bad but we know he will be better as the season goes, he needs to find his pace. He still can finish around 15 g and 35a which would be a little step back but considering how bad the team is this year I am not worried

7 ES points in 18 games. One of these days a team was bound to get scammed hard by these 7X$7M-8X$8M for a 21-22 year old.

A worse season than his sophomore season is not the end of the world but it's discouraging to see how he's been playing.

If you ask the Canes this already happened with JK. Albeit not a 7X7 but the fact that there is risk associated with these deals was always known.

Laf been a disappointment but I compare him to Lafreniere. It took his 5th season.

That draft is looking real weak. Jiricek soon to be traded. Savoie already traded, Wright major disappointment

It's certainly not a matter of trying with this kid, but frustration and a lack of confidence are apparent. There are still growing pains with his defensive game too which has resulted in his ice time getting cut. I wouldn't be concerned over his future but many expected him to completely break out this year, and like with many other players on the Habs the lack of improvement has been disappointing for sure.

Laf has improved every season he has played, he is nowhere near a disappointment. Is he performing to an expectation of a 1OA pick? No, but he has shown to be a threat near enough every time he is on the ice. He is probably out second best forward after Panarin tbh.

He has shown up against the best teams and in the play-offs. It's fair to compare Laf to Slaf but to say he is a disappointment is poor take.
