The other wrinkle about sufficient punishment for allegedly "dangerous" acts like punching someone in the back of the head, is that it could potentially be viewed as tacit acknowledgement that the league sees these kinds of incidents as serious threats to the long-term health of players.

If they suddenly come out and start giving out 40 games for incidents like this, you might think that players who suffered from these kinds of incidents in the past might be emboldened to sue the league for not addressing the issue sooner.

I don't think it's too outlandish that the league is more interested in protecting against significant litigation than protecting the players themselves.

Xhekaj could have handled the retaliation a lot better. Set the terms at the face off, square up to the guy, drop the gloves and pummel him whether he's enthusiastic or not, it's over.

Even before he touched him Pare would have known Xhekaj wasn't coming over to ask him about his dinner plans after the game. The idea that Xhekaj jumped him out of nowhere is ridiculous. Pare knew exactly what was happening and chose to keep his gloves stapled on because he was too much of a coward to answer for what he did.

Corey Perry fought Wayne Simmonds even though Tavares falling head first into Perry's knee was way less intentional than anything Pare did. Its not really surprising that a Leaf wouldn't feel the need to answer the bell given the leadership on the team.

Perry fought Nick Foligno. But they had a chat at the FO circle and squared off with an understanding which is about as gentlemanly as you can handle a situation like that.

Xhekaj was correct in knocking on Pare’s door to ask for a fight. Where he got it wrong was he got frustrated with Pare’s refusal and ended up attacking the guy with his gloves on.
