Sather bringing in both Clark and Gorton and surrounding himself with the right personnel was one of the better moves of the last 10 years. Although there is still room for improvement with our drafting, we would probably be worse off without them.

Oh you guys really liked the Gomez trade ? Wow, what a revelation ! :propeller

I also really like sex, food and found money ! ;)

Also, 'past few years' and you guys are mentioning Jagr, Barnaby, Chris friggin Simon....lol, welcome to Rangerland !

Recently I like the drafting in later rounds - Fogarty, Noreau, St Croix, Nieves, Andersson, Buchnevich, and Duclair. Good raw talent at a nice price.

- The McD trade obviously
- The Sykora trade (thought we should have re-signed him), but I'm not sure that fits in with Bluenote's definition of 'few'...
- The Miller pick
- The Richards signing

Purely from a trade standpoint and what it brought to the team, I liked the Antropov for the 2nd rounder trade.

We went from out of the playoffs to a somewhat dangerous team.

Call me crazy but the general team demeanor from that year's team and this year's team is pretty similar. Fringe playoff team with some balance issues. Not so dominant defense. The Antropov trade actually pushed us from like 10th or 11th to I believe the 6 seed and made us a relatively dangerous team heading into the playoffs.

I can certainly look back in hindsight and say what were good moves - bringing in Avery (the first time), trading for McDonagh, drafting Staal, etc.

But the one move I really liked at the time it was made was bringing in Tortorella..and I don't say that in the context that he should still be here. Coaches like Torts have a shelf life wherever they go, and his time here was ticking down to zero.

I just thought at the time the malaise and apathy under Renney had gotten to ridiculous proportions, and a change - to a guy like Torts - was sooooooooo necessary.

I think his shelf life would have been much longer if Sather hadn't meddled with the core Torts had formed. Like you, I'm not saying that he should still be here, but had Dubi, Anisimov, and Prust been retained... I think he would have still had the locker room and his team last year would have been more successful.

Jagr Trade
I remember going to a game when the rumors were first happening, and a guy on line saying, "I rather trade for Peter Bondra." Moron.

Avery Trade
Thought it was a nothing trade at the time. I found Avery's first run here pretty magical, and give him pretty much a lifetime pass for that.

McDonaugh Trade
lol

Prust Trade

It can't be said enough how useless Chris Higgins was here. To get anything in return was pretty spectacular, letalone Prust.

Gaborik signing
The Greatest Rangers Free Agent signing of the Sather era (by far). It was a little risky with Gabby's injury history, but he was relatively healthy, and awesome those first couple years. While half as good, I still rather have him than the three stiffs we traded him for.

Shanahan Signing.
Second best of the Sather era. Shanny was awesome until the collision against the Flyers. Was actually at that game.

Rick Nash Trade
This might be a little controversial, but I still really like it. After dismal playoff scoring, we desperately needed another scoring threat to go along with Gabby, and that's exactly what we got. The only player we gave up that I miss at all, is Dubi, and I hated him half the time, anyway. I have no idea why people lament this trade. We had a really lucky year, combined with a Lundqvist career year, then immediately fell back to who we were the years prior.

Antropov trade
I loved Big Nik. Probably our most successful deadline trade in the Lundqvist era. I appreciate this mediocre acquisition, because its surrounded by truly awful ones.

Aaron Ward for Paul Mara
I hated Aaron Ward. It seemed like 20 goals went off this big goofs skate. Paul Mara was a little up and down, but there was a period where he and Staal were a really great defensive pairing. Most of this was Staal's doing as he came into his own into a top shutdown defenseman, but Mara found a way to compliment him very nicely. This was also around the time Paul Mara's beard was worth the acquisition alone. Paul Bunyan Mara was one of the many unnecessary Tortorella doghouse victims.

Adam Hall for Pascal Dupuis
I always liked Dupuis on Minnesota. My college roommate was from Minny, so I watched a lot of Wild games, and appreciated his game. Thought it was a nice low key trade that could benefit us. I won't mention what happened a week later, because this is the good stuff.

Petr Sykora
I would have forgotton about this if somebody else didn't mention it. I think 90% of his goals were on the shootout, but we seemed to win every game down the stretch that way, so it was just what we needed.

This post is gold!

I liked the drafting of Fast. skilled forward in the 6th is golden.

also liked the signings of Girardi, Gilroy and Allen. I like the idea of finding these defensemen who may bloom late. low risk, high reward.

I hated that whiny little ****.Toots has become an anchor on the C-Bus blue line and meanwhile, the "Uberskilled" enigmatic douchenozzle that was Zherdev was released by his third KHL team THIS YEAR within the last few weeks.

Zherdev might be done by now, but how could we make a playoffs then w/o it? As for Toots we should have sign him as UFA.

McDonagh for Gomez might be the best move in team history. If only McDonagh had more potent options to pass to.Imagine if he was hitting Kane, Ovy, or or even a Justin Williams type with that lethal first pass. A legit finisher with speed. He'd be putting up 50 points like clockwork.

People fawn over Keith and Doughty, rightfully so, but McDonagh on the Hawks or Kings could do just as much.

/rant

Underrated move: bringing in Michal Rozsival in 2005.

I liked his game a lot. Felt he never got a fair deal from a faction in the fanbase that wanted him to be Beuk or something. He was good PP Dman, and a good Dman ingeneral with size and a good shot. Not enough of a tough guy for some. The beer muscle crowd.

All the trades he hasent made.

And I still think trading for Prust and Mcdonagh was an accident and they had no clue either would be as valuable as they have been

I remember that trade being pretty criticized here. I think any trade that can acquire a NHL player, whether it be a star or a 4th line center, for a mid-round draft pick is a total success. The best that you can hope for in a 3rd-7th rounder is someone who contributes for your team at the NHL level.

Ill take that pick back boyle su%$# or any pick or bag of pucks for him . i would rather have Asham up and boyle sent down . Never saw someone with so much size get pushed around so easy.

I remember jumping up in absolute joy when reading that Sather traded Novak, Ulanov and some picks to get the Russian Rocket in 2002. Unfortunately, for the NHL and the Rangers, the greatest of goal scorers managed only a short sting in Rangers before hurting his knee quite seriously. A tremendous athlete and one of those trades, along with the trade for Jagr, that shows what a great GM Glen can be.
