Obviously from a franchise POV, he brings more value to your team because of who he is. If they win, thats a bonus.
But lets pretend the Oilers go on a 10 game streak while he is gone looking amazing. He comes back and they crash down to looking like crap again.
Seems like a good way to outsmart yourself. Mcdavid is the best player in the league and the Oilers are a much better team with him than without.
Yeah you can trade him for depth, but McDavid's contract at 12 million makes him so much better than 2, $6 million guys or one $8 million dollar and one $4 million dollar guy.
Mcdavid has a massive impact on almost every game he plays. Unless you were to get like 2-3 guys on major bargain contracts in return, you could almost never win the trade from an Oilers perspective.
Trading him due to the Oilers doing well in a short stretch when he is out would be a very dumb move and the Oilers would regret it.
