Wait, do *future* 30-goal scorers like Primeau and Kozlov count too? Because then 90-91 Whalers could add Sanderson and Young to get to 13.:laugh:

The 2002-03 Maple Leafs had nine former 30 goal scorers on their roster at the same time.

1. Mats Sundin
2. Alexander Mogilny
3. Gary Roberts
4. Owen Nolan
5. Robert Reichel
6. Mikael Renberg
7. Shayne Corson
8. Phil Housley
9. Doug Gilmour

Granted there wasn't a ton of overlap as a couple of those guys spent significant time on the IR. There were also six former 40 goal scorers on this list (Sundin, Roberts, Mogilny, Nolan, Gilmour, Reichel).

The next season, 2003-04 Maple Leafs had eight former 30 goal scorers all on the team at once.

1. Mats Sundin
2. Joe Nieuwendyk
3. Gary Roberts
4. Owen Nolan
5. Alexander Mogilny
6. Robert Reichel
7. Ron Francis
8. Mikael Renberg

The top six guys on that list are also former 40 goal scorers. And three of them are former 50 goal scorers (Mogilny, Nieuwendyk, Roberts).

I'd kindly settle for a tall glass of milk.
Holy cow, I think we have a winner!!

This one is really unexpected. Especially in that some of these past 30-goal seasons are total one-offs (Bjugstad) or are for relatively obscure teams (Plett).
It's a fun exercise! Great idea!

I like targeting where guys like Petri Skriko, Pat Elynuik, Warren Young end up, teams that bunch up older players (some of those early Lightning teams), and teams around the merger in '79. Some of those 1970's teams like Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh, can go 7 to 8 deep, with a litany of names of guys who hit the 30 goal mark once.

Housley, Doug Wilson, and Kevin Hatcher are nice targets.

I totally forgot about Bob Kudelski's 40 goal campaign over the years.

I was surprised that I couldn't find a single Rangers' team with 10 +30 goal scorers on it at one time (in the '80s).

I'm cheating here, because it's not a decade, rather 11 years (anything with an "8" in it as far as years go I'm using), but here's are all of the scorers who scored +30 goals, only prior to playing with the Rangers, or with that player still being on the roster the following year. I'm not counting the Turcotte, Dave Gagner, Paul Fenton, etc, because they did it on other teams after being with the Rangers, or in Turcotte's case, the year after he scored 30 goals, he's into the '90 (1990-91).

Has a team, ever had more 30 goal scorers in a single decade (or 11 years)?

damn close at 26. One could stretch it a little and include Paul Fenton 32, who normally probably doesn't count, as he was a Whaler after his 32 goal season, but never got into a game before being traded...

Awesome! A lot of sneaky guys in there, like Barry Pederson, Jorgen Pettersson, and Tiger Williams. I was also thinking about Tim Kerr and Brian Propp ending their careers with Hartford in the early '90s.

I wouldn't count Fenton, only because he did it years later with Winnipeg.

BTW, since you're a Whalers' guy, I was rooting hard for them in the '92 playoffs. I remember barely anyone being at the Civic Center, yet, it sounded loud on TV, and Yvon Corriveau (of all people) looking like Cam Neely for a handful of games.

  2. Brian MacLellan
  3. Brian Bellows
  4. Neal Broten
  5. Kent Nilsson
  6. Dennis Maruk
  7. Keith Acton
  8. Scott Bjugstad
  9. Willi Plett
  10. Steve Payne
  11. Mark Pavelich
  12. Tony McKegney

This one is crazy, especially considering it was a crap team that drafted 5th overall in 1987 ... but it should be noted that Pavelich joined the team late in the year after McKegney and Nilsson had been traded, so there were only 11 on that team at any given time.

My bad. I had the wrong year, that was for the 1984-85 season (whoops!). Nice catch! 👍

Revised version:

1983-84 Minnesota North Stars
  1. Neal Broten
  2. Brian Bellows
  3. Dino Ciccarelli
  4. Dennis Maruk
  5. Steve Payne
  6. Keith Acton
  7. Mark Napier
  8. Willi Plett
  9. Al MacAdam
  10. Paul Holmgren
  11. Jordy Douglas
  12. *Bobby Smith
Tom McCarthy isn't on this list (above), because he passed the 30 goal mark (39 in total) for the first time in 1983-84. Obviously Bobby Smith shouldn't count, as he was traded for Napier and Acton that year.

'1984-85' Minnesota North Stars (corrected)
  1. Neal Broten
  2. Brian Bellows
  3. Dino Ciccarelli
  4. Tom McCarthy
  5. Keith Acton
  6. Steve Payne
  7. Willi Plett
  8. Mark Napier
  9. Tony McKegney
  10. Dennis Maruk
  11. Paul Holmgren

Ah, but Fenton was also a Whaler between 90-91 and 91-92... but he never got to play a regular game then.

I was thinking of the 1982-83 Chicago Black Hawks, but if I counted correctly, they only had 7 guys. Interestingly, all of them got their 30+ previously while playing for Chicago.

* Denis Savard (32G in ‘81-‘82)
* Al Secord (44G in ‘81-‘82)
* Doug Wilson (39G in ‘81-‘82)
* Tom Lysiak (32G in ‘81-‘82)
* Darryl Sutter (40G in ‘80-‘81)
* Rich Preston (31G in ‘79-‘80)
* Grant Mulvey (39G in ‘79-‘80)

not counting
* Steve Larmer (43G that season)
* Peter Marsh (43G in WHA)
* Tony Tanti (45G the next season in VAN)
* Troy Murray (45G three seasons later)
* Curt Fraser (just short of 30 in ‘81-‘82 in VAN)

90-91 Kings:
  1. Gretzky
  2. Robitaille
  3. Sandstrom
  4. Granato
  5. Dave Taylor
  6. Sinisalo (acquired midseason) / Krushelnyski (traded away midseason) - not traded for each other, but they did not overlap
  7. Tonelli
  8. Scott Bjugstsad (!!!)

EDIT: Actually, the 89-90 Kings do even better with 11 players at one time (12 if you count everyone who played for them that season, i.e., counting each of Nicholls, Sandstrom, and Granato):
  1. Gretzky
  2. Robitaille
  3. Sandstrom (acquired midseason for Nicholls)
  4. Granato (acquired midseason for Nicholls)
  5. Taylor
  6. Tonelli
  7. Krushelnyski
  8. Scott Bjugstsad (!!!)
  9. Keith Crowder
  10. Jim Fox
  11. Mikko Mäkelä

pre-Gretzky 1987-88 LA Kings had these 10 guys

* Jimmy Carson (37G in ‘86-‘87)
* Luc Robitaille (45G in ‘86-‘87)
* Bernie Nicholls (46G in ‘84-‘85)
* Dave Taylor (47G in ‘80-‘81)
* Bobby Carpenter (53G in ‘84-‘85)
* Jim Fox (30G in ‘84-‘85)
* Bob Bourne (35G in ‘80-‘81)
* Craig Laughlin (30G in ‘85-‘86)
* Ron Duguay (40G in ‘81-‘82)
* Tiger Williams (35G in ‘80-‘81)

93-94 Pens are also very strong here:
  1. Lemieux
  2. Jagr
  3. Francis
  4. Stevens
  5. Mullen
  6. Trottier
  7. Sandstrom (midseason acquisition)
  8. Tocchet
And Straka scored 30 that season. McEachern had 28 in a prior season as well.

That's the first Pens team I thought of. Also Markus Naslund was a rookie on that team. He would score 30 but not until 1999. No way I would have guessed the 87 North Stars.

Well, Dirk Graham's first (and only) 30+ goal season was during 1988-89, so he doesn't count for purposes of this thread.

And Adam Creighton would not have his only 30-goal season until 1989-90, a year later.

(Does anyone find it weird that Wayne Presley had a 30-goal season....? the more-so that it was in 1986-87, when the Hawks sucked bone.)

That is true, which is why I titled the list as players on that particular team who had 30-goal seasons in their careers.

I thought it was an interesting collection of players in time and the post would hardly be the first or only one to tippy-toe outside the strict confines of the criteria of an original post on this site.
