Most average player in the NHL?

I just had a conversation with someone about this earlier. They were asking me about Lehkonen in Montreal and about what he would bring to a team beyond defense. They asked about his skating, average. His toughness? Average. His production? Average. Shooting? Average. Passing? Average. His likeability, leadership, intangibles? Average. Other than D, I really couldn't find a thing to describe him as great at.

Yeah Lehkonen is super duper average.
Although, he's able to score some beauties off of his wrister at times.... its like someone else takes possession of his hands and he looks like a pure sniper for that moments.

Brandon sutter

Skating average
doesnt hit
Below average at faceoffs
doesnt excel defensively
definition of bland on offense

Guy never had point per game numbers even in junior, which ive seen fighters get to that benchmark

but he had a 13 year career which is wild

From Finnish perspective I must give honorary mention to Olli Määttä. He's not bad, but he's not great either. (Although, for some reason whenever he dresses for Team Finland, he plays well).

By definition wouldn’t it be someone who has the least amount of positive or negative impact, aka most neutral impact?

Craig Smith is a good player.

Calle Jarnkrok is probably right around that neutral impact range. Also agree with Tanner Pearson.

Matt Stajan seemed like the most average player of all time. He even looked average. Like if he wasn't playing hockey, he'd be in middle management in a small to medium office somewhere.

Current player... Maybe another vote for Pearson?

For the actual answer to this question, find out the average season point total for skaters, and then find the guy who most closely averages that point total. Maybe break it down by position. The “most average” player changes slightly year to year, I’d assume, unless you are matching the player average to a specified multi-season average. I know that’s probably not exactly what you meant, but I just wanted to say there are objective answers to the question, depending on the parameters chosen.

Its interesting because a there are a lot of players that don't play much NHL games but can still be considered NHLers. If you include them, the average player would be a borderline 3rd/4th liner or a bottom pair Dman that can do spot duty on a higher pair.

Brandon Saad. Probably a little bit better than average, but fits the description as far as being a player that is decent at pretty much everything with no standout skills.

Saad is one of the best complementary players in the league and was instrumental in Chicago's dynasty. I would hardly call him average.
