I'm also not sure that they'll be visa free for the World Cup. I think they'll waive the consular fees for visas to meet FIFA requirements.

I'm going to apply for a tourist visa next week. Should I wait some more to see if they waive the consular fees? Becuase i literally wrote everywhere (visa center, IIHF, embassy) and nobody knows the answer. They just keep telling me i need a tourist visa for the entry. I think it's ridiculous as the WC is only few months ahead :shakehead

the visa is free but there is £35 pound processing fee that has to be paid

Do you go to the Consulate or agency for visa? For example, in Turkey, many countries process visa through authorized agencies - so if you want to apply for a visa, you have nothing to do with Russian Consulate. If this is the case in Slovakia as well, I'd recommend calling the agency directly - they generally give valuable information on phone. From my personal experience: The agencies for Latvia, Croatia and Russia do not even respond to mails, though I assume you and I write to different places :) However, I had a huge exchange of mails for Poland. They were really helpful. So, calling is the best option I guess.

If you won't stay more than a month or so, you will need a tourist visa, yes. I don't know requirements for Slovak citizens but generally you are expected to prove that you will go back to your country after visiting duration. So, while applying for visa, presenting,

* Round-trip tickets, or any other travel documents
* If possible, WC tickets you have
* Accommodation reservations to show them where you'll be staying
* Bank account with enough money in it, so they know that you are "eligible" for such a trip abroad - nobody would want a hungry, penniless tourist, eh? The amount of money you need depends on country - I think you can learn it from the agency or the Consulate.

would be very helpful. Apart from that, and most importantly, you must present a document which means that you will be back in Slovakia after visit. A letter from workplace, a student certificate... Anything. Just make them say, "This guy has things to do in Slovakia, so he will go back."

Visa policy for Slovakians may not be that strict though, so don't be scared.

We have only a visa agency doing all the work for embassy at this time. You are right, now i feel little bit ashamed that our visa apply process is way easier comparing to yours. We just need some sort of invitation letter from agency in Russia (be that hotel or any other accredited person). But it was those prices that got me. Few years back you were allowed to apply right at the embassy for just 35€, now it's suddenly 60€ + invitation letter starting from 9€. They only find ways to get more money from you.

ah ours are around $100 plus $50 or so for the invitation. Plus $50~ for an agency to help (otherwise I'd have to fly to DC).

Oh well such is life for American reciprocity visas. Had to pay $160 to go to Argentina two years ago. :(

They vary depending on what class of service and train. Platzkart is going to be pretty affordable but if you want to blow money there's luxury and fast trains.

Unfortunately you can't buy yet online off the railways site in English. most of the ticket brokers you see online will charge 3-4x the price. Platzkart Piter to Novgorod should cost like $4-5 but you'll see them online for $20

So it's just a better bet to buy at the station. I have been wanting to visit St. Petersburg forever and a day.

a great city. I had 2 stints there, 6 years in total. You are in for a treat.

funny and true story. I was hanging out at an internet café/café/restaurant on the main drag, Nevski Prospekt... just sitting there one afternoon enjoying a cappuccino and this guy approaches, "excuse me, but is your name Rob?" I tell him no I'm not Rob. He picks up something of a familiar accent, at least not a Russian accent, so he asks, "wait, are you American?" To which I answer, no, I'm not, but you're close. He looks a little confused and asks, Mexican? To which I roll my eyes and shake my head like you got to be kidding me. He thinks for about 30 seconds before he finally clues in, "oh ya, north of the border".

I forgot to include and probably makes the incident funnier, considering it was an American who mistook me for a Mexican, confused by my accent and country of origin if not the U.S. but close.

We became good friends though. Hung out a good bit the few months he spent there.

This year's May is great for visiting Russia, as there already are the Easter (1-st of May by the Eastern Orthodox calendar) and the Victory Day (9-th of May), adding hockey just makes that month perfect for it.

Moscow has been improving greatly as of late. They have been redoing the pedestrian streets and parking is either prohibited or paid by hour inside of the city downtown, so it's much more friendly and comfortable towards tourists.

Would love to go but I'm afraid of being the target of violence due to being transgender (not so much visibly, but my deep voice would give me away).

Ugh that's a bummer. The one thing I can say is that for international events the Russians don't mess around. But I also would be pretty nervous about going around St Petersburg. :(

You will be just fine. The only problem that you might face is if you wear flamboyant clothing and run into some drunk rednecks

You'll be fine. SP is pretty liberal. I wouldn't advise going elsewhere though.

St. Petersburg is relatively safe, but there is a slight risk to non white people outside of the main tourist areas. Although why you'd go out into the suburbs I don't know.

BTW, I'd recommend, if you'll have a possibility, to visit some old Russian towns. Russia is not only St-Petersburg or Moscow. There are a lot of interesting things to see here.
