Morgan Rielly

Rielly had trouble last night .. Sens speed exposes his game play .. so he realized he can't rush up but then he has no D game to fall back on .. Carlo may not be able to save him .. this guy needs to be carefully managed by Berube

He looked good night, hopefully the playoff Mo we know and love is here to stay. Good early signs.
He actually did. Especially down low in our end. That giveaway was bad, while he was put in a terrible position on the ring from Willie he should have just pushed it back deep, and everything else was pretty good. It's interesting, I think some people just don't want to be all that happy as a Leaf fan. That was a great win and we did a lot of things a good playoff team does, but we gotta 1) find something and 2) we hate giving up on someone we've been berating. There's a long line of people over Leafs history, specifically defencemen, that get the Rielly treatment and it's unfortunate.

Adjusting Rielly stats in the playoffs to an 82 games season from the start of the 2022 playoffs:

Goals: 27
Points: 70
+45

2nd best playoff dman over that stretch to Makar?

Not sure I agree. But I like the sound of it!

Rielly has been great this series. Carlo may have saved his Leafs career. Because they make a great duo, and I have confidence seeing Mo on the ice again now.

I don’t still has trouble making simple passes but Hes got the 🍀 of the Irish now in terms of the 2 flukey goals he scored

+45 feels more impressive when you take into account the Leafs as a team are only +2 at even strength over that stretch.

Definitely started playing better ever since Carlo’s arrival. That was such a big addition by Treliving not only addressing the need of a RHD but someone to help elevate Rielly’s play.

Playoff mode Rielly has arrived. He’s looked good out there again.

Quickly/roughly ...

He's in the top 5 scoring per and top 11 for points in the playoffs.

Now if you filter with minimum games played he's much higher.
Say, minimum 10 games played.
Active players he's 2nd. in goals, 7th. in PPG.

Regular season 150 games played, he's 14th. in points per game, G/PG 61st.

scoring per game since 2021.

If you want points per game since 2021.

Your right, my initial numbers were from 2022. Second guessed myself there. Corrected.

I think that's a bit of selective stat picking there... if you go by points over the last 4 playoff years, and give a minium of 10gp, he's tied for 4th with Hedman, behind Makar, Bouchard, and Fox.

He's played 28 games over that time, whereas Makar is at 40, Bouchard 55, Fox 43, and Hedman 35.

That being said, I think it might be more worthwhile to consider his entire playoff career.

60 games played, 13 goals, 43 points. A .22 goals per game pace, and .72 point per game pace.

Much is made of forwards like ROR who have higher production in the playoffs than the regular season... but Rielly's regular season stats are .1 goals per game and .59 points per game.

His assist numbers remain reasonably consistent regular season to playoffs, but his goalscoring doubles.

i rather another defensive D in the mold of carlo, mccabe, and tanev.....and spend most of rielly's 7.5 on a legit 3C

In any defensive group, you need balance. +/- is far from a perfect stat, but if we take these last 5 years, there are only 6 defencemen with a positive +/- in the playoffs for the Leafs.

-Morgan Rielly at +15
-Luke Schenn at +8
-Jake Muzzin at +4
-Ilya Lyubushkin at +3
-Chris Tanev at +2
-Brandon Carlo at +1

I don't think it's a coincidence that 3 of those 5 have been guys that have been "stapled" to Morgan Rielly.
You need balance in a defensive pair. You can't put Benoit and Carlo out there together as a pair and expect success.

How does Rielly let that perfect face off win on the power play in OT get out?

I’ve never liked Rielly and i will not miss the guy this off season when he’s hopefully moved. For $7 million and nearly 31 years old I think there’s a better way to spend that money for what he brings. I’d rather it go to a guy like Bennett who strengthens the top 6

His play is fine this series .. truly i thought it would be worse but he has played better than i expected .. he has trouble with his hands every once in a while on dump ins and clearings .. and he does not react quick enough on faceoffs sometimes like last night on PP .. but he is ok this series .. he does log a lot of minutes .. of course his cap hit is way too high but we have other guys with same issue .. it is nest series where i think you will see da major problems in his own end .. but we will see

He’s so terrible on the PP.. why do they keep trying it? Even with Tavares hurt, anyone who is even a remote threat to shoot is better than this guy who is totally static, makes slow decisions, and 100% likely to pass.

I totally get why they have been sticking to 5 forwards so much..

Would perhaps run Ekman-Larsson over him on the PP
no defenseman on the powerplay works with the personnel we have

Nylander -Marner - Matthews need to be on the umbrella with 2 forwards at the net. This allows the skilled guys to control the puck and make the plays on the outside, where they have the most success

Adding a defenseman forces one of them to enter the bumper spot or go down near the net, that's not their strength nor does it utilize their talent the best way

Lacks the processing time and speed of execution when the decision is right and generally makes poor hockey IQ decisions for the others.
