Morgan Rielly

I'm sure those same folks who were here night after night calling him an AHL-calibre defenseman will now give him some respect or kudos for the turnaround. Right? Right??
How bad was he before the turnaround? Because he is presently a minus 13, of players that have appeared in at least 40 games the next worse is Robertson at minus 2. And the next worse Dman was Timmins at plus 2.

That flub-away on the 2nd goal was more misfortune than anything. All I can spin positively is that better tonight than in the playoffs.

Not to chest thump too much, but this is why mid season buyout talk gets silly.

He's finally hearing up when the hockey matters most of all

Rielly’s still gotta go.

To borrow a concept from material science, where ductile means a material can deform without failure while brittle means sudden catastrophic failure with no any advanced visual warning, Rielly is a guy who makes defensive errors under pressure that you can’t recover from on any given play. You can’t rely on him.

Doesn’t matter what he does the rest of the way or how far the team goes. He’s not fit for purpose. Just compare him to Forsling tonight and see what a number one can do to control the play and keep things calm while generating offense intelligently. We need someone like that to lead the blueline.

Nate Schmidt looks 2x the player that Rielly is. Fast, elite puck movement, and, average defense.
With Rielly, you get lackluster defense, no offensive awareness, terrible skating, but, he will jump up on the play to make it a 4 on 2, just so he can shoot it wide of the net.

He should have been dumped to Chicago in exchange for Jones, but no, Toronto management is too stupid to see how much of a turd he is.

The entire Leafs' D is slow and immobile, it's ridiculous how this guy has aged 10 years in the span of a few seasons. He was terrible last playoffs, and, his wheels have completely fallen off this season.

Playoff Mo?? What crack are you smoking!

Over the past 10-20 games, he has done nothing in all of those games.
He's been below average defensively, and, below average offensively.

The only reason his advanced metrics looked good, was because he was being propped up by excellent goaltending, superb defensive play by Carlo, and - offensively, he was being carried by Knies, Marner, and Matthews.

This is why you don't stare at advanced numbers, you look at the eye-test. He has been complete garbage in all facets of the game, I don't need advanced metrics to tell me otherwise.

More importantly, his skating has completely declined, that's the biggest concern to me, as that was his biggest asset -- smooth skating and fast acceleration to move the puck out of the defensive zone, into an offensive opportunity.

This drop off in his skating, has resulted, in Rielly making long passes that often get picked off, as he was never a good passer, hence, why he's a tire fire.

IMO, our biggest mistake was dealing away Sandin, imagine had we kept Sandin, and, dumped Rielly off.
We would be such a better team, and, in a position to add additional assetts.

Last night he cost us da game in 3rd with a brutal terrible giveaway --- might as well have just shot puck in our net for f**** sakes .. and he made another almost as atrocious giveaway which Woll saved his *ss on too .. these are da 2 kinda mistakes teams just can't afford to make to advance in da playoffs .. he is gonna need to sit on da pines against Florida for most of 3rd periods .. we just can't lose a game like last night when it matters .. da truth needs to be told .. Berube is not stupid and Shanny is at da end of his rope too so Rielly is gonna sit .. it is near da end for Rielly in pro hockey .. I give it 1 or 2 years then its done for him

Wonder if we are watching the final few games of Rielly in a Leafs uniform?

I just don't know how you move forward with him, given so much term and money is already locked up on the blueline by deals Treliving has handed out?

Rielly supporters either don’t watch the games or don’t understand hockey. How can anybody watch how bad he is defensively and not realize how big a liability he is out there. Combine that with how ineffective he is offensively now, how many low percentage shots he takes, how little smarts he displays and his total lack of effort and urgency and it’s very obvious that he cannot be relied upon to play defense in the top four on a team with championship aspirations. He embodies the lack commitment and team first attitude this organization needs to build a true cup contender.

Listening to Rielly being disingenous last night during his post game shows you perfectly why we have to move on from this guy. To say that game was close is an embarassing comment. Florida had more high danger chances than Leafs had shots according to Kyper. Not only that, but it shows total disrespect to his fans. This guy is becoming less and less likeable as the season goes on.

Couldn't agree more.

Rielly is an earnest sounding bullshitter. There’s no quality control to his own game. It’s been that way for a long time.
