I get it's a hit to the head but it didn't have much chance of injury (just based on the angles Ive see). The hit has theatrics around it working against it. The league also hates the idea of players taking the law in their own hands at all, or "the code".

I usually advocate for longer suspensions, and I have no love for the Leafs, but this is one I think should be on the lower end.

Grieg trolling with an empty net Slapshot is the same innocent fun Matthews has when he name checked Sabourin, nobody gets hurt. Imagine the butthurt that would arise from the same group of people defending Rielly if Sabourin punched Matthews in the mouth.

No one is really arguing that the leafs shouldn't have responded to it.
More people are arguing this then leafs fans saying this isn't a suspension

You have maybe 5 leafs fans saying its not suspension worthy whereas you could make a whole seperate thread about people saying the leafs shouldn't have responded to it

Most are in agreement of a suspension.

Rielly should be thrown in jail and possibly be given the chair

If there had been one available, maybe Rielly would have used it.

They are being compared because both happened this season, and both are crosschecks to the head after the whistle and the play was over.
Fair, but comparing them is dumb in my books as the situations are wildly different.

Only in the NHL would fans and critics be more satisfied if Reilly actually dropped his gloves and starting beating this guy with his fists. Break a nose, break a jaw, loose some teeth. Whatever. He wouldn't have even got suspended. But a crosscheck to the shoulder / ultimately his head is cause for a 10 game suspension. Not suggesting a stick is better than a fist. All I know is that they both hurt.

Weird world we live in.

Mike Johnson summed it up best on Edmonton sports talk. (1:05:25). The Nielson Show - February 12th - Hour 2

1. Greig can do what he wants. You want to piss off the other team, go ahead.
2. Greig should know and expect a response.
3. Greig went down hard because he knew that Rielly did something stupid.
4. Crosscheck to the head is never a valid response.
5. Rielly should and will get suspended.
6. People who think DOPS has it in for the Leafs are incorrect.

It doesn’t hit him in the neck, it hits him in the face.

I see neck in that video. His stick ride’s along Greig’s shoulder. Greig’s head initially snaps forward toward Rielly when he hits him in the neck. Then he sort of turns his stick and follows through against Greig’s head/face with his right hand.

Anyway not really the point. My point is there’s a difference between Perron’s clean cross-check to the head and a cross-check that rides up the arm and shoulder. You have to keep control of your stick, it’s an obvious suspension regardless, but it’s a different level of suspension.

lmao

They 100000% hold the leafs to a higher standard compared to the rest of the league because they get the most attention

And I agree Rielly should be suspended

There are examples, including on this very page. Every team would react in some way, including your Senators.

React, sure. Go attack? Not really.

It's not a tough look to show everyone that some non violent act hurts you so much.

You would look a lot more unphased by chirping him or making fun of him.

See, Friedman tried to make it about fan biases when it’s actually pretty clear.
