I posted a thread about the top 10 most valuable assets on the main board in the entire league. I had Matthews in the top 10 and Marner on the fringe. The fact that Rielly is only 24 and defensmen take longer to develop; this makes him one of most valuable assets in the NHL in my opinion.

re: Captain - I'd still prefer Tavares or Matthews to be captain. My preference at this point is still Matthews.

He handles the puck so well on the PP.

Watching other teams PP really highlights what having Rielly and Marner on the point can do.

Then you have Tavares who can handle the puck, and when Matthews is back 4 players who can whip it around.

PPG Stats For Top Defenseman (First 7 Seasons Post-Draft)

The bolded number for each player represents the first season where they reached 0.60 (actually is 0.61) ppg which over an 82 game season would be 50 pts, a milestone point total for defensemen. As you can see looking at a number of the top defensemen in the league they typically reach this plateau and take off in their D+4 to D+6 seasons. I thought it was worthwhile to compile this as many on these boards from other fanbases seemed to criticize Rielly’s offensive production up until this season saying he wasn’t tracking to be a top defenseman in that regard. As you can see he is right on schedule with his 1D peers.

I did. Said he was the best player in the draft before Burke said it. I remember arguments with people on here before the draft with so many saying he was the 5 best D man and some on here after the draft claiming Finn would be better. After the draft many were disappointed that we did not get the centre as well as Murray was vastly superior which I laughed at as I knew them both. Murray was a year older and a decent D man but lacked upside as well as the explosive skating that Morgan has.

My profile pick has been the same since we drafted him and myself along with a small handful of posters stated time after time that Morgan would not be just a offensive D man but good defensively which he is.

Like I have said many times I maybe a little bias as I know him very well and got to see him perform daily but he always impressed me with his work ethic and willingness to play the game the way the coach wants. Add this into elite skill and his hockey IQ and look at what we have. I wonder where the poster is who said that he is at best a #5 D man is!

So glad he's locked up to a great contract, he's gunna be a Norris nominee at the very least if he keeps this up.

The only thing Rielly is missing these days, is a strong point shot. Still scoring a lot of goals without it.

The only way he isn't the captain of the Leafs next year is if Matthews demands it

Also, i think he will end the year around 75 points and top 3 Norris. Right now hes the frontrunner

This guy is f***ing awesome. That is all.

Edit: lol I'm an idiot please delete, didn't see the existing thread

He's f***ing awesome but HF will still tell us he's not a legitimate 1D and that guys like Dumba and Ghost are better

The Leafs got extremely lucky that he got injured or there is zero chance he's available at 5.
