Clarifying his free agent status.

Does he become a UFA on his 27th birthday, July 20th if he doesn't have a contract by then or does he stay a RFA and Boston keeps his rights until the end of the season?

He's an RFA this summer and Bruins can qualify him
So either a long term deal or arbitration? MG will want max term on his next deal. I don't know if this is a sticky point for the Bruins.
Ironically, if it goes to arbitration, he'll be 27yo, Bruins can't trade him, and he'll head to UFA next season...

I think he gets more than that on a 5 year deal.
Could be, but he has to be careful here. He was healthy scratched this very season and didn't catch fire until he was put with Pastrnak. Holding out for more than that could see him traded at his highest value and find himself on the 2nd or 3rd line on another team wondering why no one is getting him the puck the way Pastrnak did.

He can also go to arbitration, he's got a case for a 6 mil + deal. He's a right shot forward with size, there will be teams with players who can get him the puck who can offer more. Its unlikely he gets traded without the acquiring team locking him up in the first place, that would be the way Boston would get value from a trade.
