A curling bonspiel at the Mutual Street Arena, Toronto, 1929.

Home of the Leafs at the time.

Most around here know that Gerry Cheevers wore #30 with the Bruins, and if you follow me on Twitter, I've probably beaten it into your heads by now that he wore #31 immediately after returning from the WHA (Dave Reece had laid claim to #30 until he was ultimately send back down after Gerry's return).

Far rarer is a photo of Cheevers wearing #1 with the Bruins - of course, when the two-goalie system started, teams weren't as concerned with "ONE NUMBER ONE GOALIE". When the 1966-67 season started, Johnston had #1 and Parent had #30. Cheevers was called up when Johnston was injured, and so Cheevers got #1.

Anyhow, here's a shot of Cheevers' 1966-67 debut from the November 10, 1966 Boston Globe. Wish it was more flattering to the goalie!

The interior of the ice rink was larger than the ice surface of the Madison Square Garden of the 1940's.It was reported that the New York Rangers sometimes practiced at the arena and may have scrimmaged with the New Jersey Skeeters.
