Moose Season Discussion

Watched most of the game today.

Moose continued to be really undisciplined and terrible on special teams. That comes down to poor coaching imo.

They elected to play a kid line of Lambert, Wagner and Zhilkin today and it was a fun line to watch.

That would be about the most direct I've seen Brad play all year. He was challenging players one on one with his speed and taking the puck to the net/slot. I didn't see his goal but he had a number of other quality looks from dangerous places. He was solid in his end as well. That was the type of game he needs to play to make the team next year.

Zhilkin has found his confidence. Not only is he tenacious on the puck but he's now starting show some offense. He walked a couple dmen and set Brad up for a slot chance on one and then cut hard to the net and was absolutely stoned on another. I'm real happy with his play lately.

Wagner also had some grade looks but couldn't get them to go. He was sound off the puck and showed some good patience with it.

Salomonsson with another solid all around outing and could have walked away with a goal as well.

Moose force OT as CJ Suess tied it up in his 300th game in antlers but Wolves win 4-3 in OT:

Especially in the opening period I thought Brad Lambert was really moving well and showing plenty of chemistry with his teammates leading to a number of solid chances.

Much like they did in the opening frame they came out the right way in the final one getting plenty of chances beginning with this one from Elias Salomonsson which he fired wide. That was followed up by this slick play by Danny Zhilkin which he followed up with this power move.

Game recap is here.

After the game we spoke with Jets prospect Danny Zhilkin, C.J. Suess (playing in his 300th game in antlers) and Moose assistant coach Eric Dubois.

Went to the game tonight and the kids cleaned up the team awards.

Salomonsson- top rookie and top dmen
DiVincentiis- Three star award
Lambert - Fan favorite

Salomonsson - Just another day at the office for him, 2 key assists and controlled the play with and without the puck. The kid is a gem and is NHL ready imo.

Zhilkin- It's clicked for him. He's noticeable and making a positive impact in all areas of the ice. Sound defensively, strong on faceoffs, hard on pucks and on the forecheck and is good at transitioning through the nz. He's also really looking much more dangerous offensively. The biggest turnaround this year.

Lambert was flying the the first period and was continuing his strong direct play. Walked it hard to the slot and ripped one off the post and set up some other good looks. But he got nailed in the second and was helped off. He tried to come back for a shift in the third but was clearly not 100% so they shut him down. The hit was on one of his cut back plays around the boards where he had nowhere to go. He's been crushed a lot trying that this year. He's got to learn to protect himself a bit more. But all in all his games is much more NHL ready now, and with a strong offseason in the gym I think he can make the team and contribute next year.

Wagner - Just a real smart player. He plays a quiet game where he's always on the right side of the puck. He gets himself open and is able to get his shot off quick. He's also a tenacious player along the boards.

Walton - He flashed some great hands and vision on a couple of occasions but you could tell he's trying to acclimatize to the higher level of play. Kid reminds me a lot of Scheifele physically and balance wise at the same age. He's a long way from the show as he really needs to put on a lot of muscle to compete physically against pros. The orgs going to have to be patient and juat allow that physical maturation to occur.

Great analysis -- thanks!

Lookin forward to seeing Salmo and Lambo develop in the offseason and some interesting additions to the team late in the season -- wonder if Malmquist sticks.

Also good to hear that Zhilkin looks to be putting it together. He's been a longtime dark horse prospect, nice combo of smarts and skills.

Hopefully we see a stronger, more competitive version of the Moose next year, and one designed to put prospects in the best possible position to learn and succeed.

Ideally, I’d like to see Salmo have one more year with the Moose. Then he can replace Miller when his contract expires. Another year in the A will let Salmo get bigger and stronger.
I think the Moose will be better next year with the likes of Yager and Barlow joining.

I think if there are only 5 better D men in TC, he should be on the roster.

My guess is that is the plan barring him shooting the lights out in camp.

My guess is they expect Lambert to make the team, especially if Fly is out.
