OK. Here is the clarification.

Gomez $7 million is off the books next year.

If you pay Subban $5.5 to $6 million, then that only leaves $1 to $1.5 million to bring in and sign basically a scrub player like we have become accustomed to seeing here in Montreal.

I see it differently. I think given Subban`s obvious loyalty to the H<abs, he might well have signed an 8 year deal that looked like this: 2-3.75-4-4.25-5-5-5-5 and that would yield a cap hit of $4.25M per year over 8 years. Remember he said he was NOT looking for Doughty money, so even if he was looking to top out at 5.5M, he probably would have settled a bit lower to get a deal at $5M per year tops.

Whereas now, if Subban has two great years, he might cost $6M+ on a long-term deal in two years.

On the other hand, the bridge contract could mean keeping Subban two years longer ultimately, so long as he signs a long-term deal after this one ends. Since defencemen (and goalies) peak later than forwards, this could be a help down the road.

Markov-Emelin
Gorges-Subban
Diaz-Bouillon

Are probably gonna be the pairings. There is no way that Francis Bouillon has to sit. I've been very skeptical of this signing, but he has proven me wrong big time, he's been very very solid.

Bouillon is also VERY solid in the playoffs (the real season).
He's a pitbull warrior. He plays bigger than most 6'3 dmen.
Anyone remember what he did to Darcy Tucker? (when Darcy was a Leaf). Tucker gave Bouillon a very dangerous dirty hit (blindside?) and when Bouillon got up (quite fast) you could almost see the smoke coming out of his ears!! He fought Tucker to defend himself like a true warrior.

What did he really accomplish? Saving 2 million in total cap space for a year and half of hockey?

If he continues to progress to the player we all unanimously predict, the question to ask is: how much cap space did MB waste by not going long term?

Right now there is a legitimate risk that Subban will command a 6.5 to 7.5 million cap...

I agree with you they should have signed him long term I just don't think they wanted to do it now. As much as you or I may have wanted a long term deal it wasn't going to happen. If Price and Pacioretty's contracts were any indication he'll get his long term deal after this contract is up

so saving 2 million is no big deal while we have bad contracts on our hands but paying 1.5-2 million more when those contracts are gone and the cap will be higher is a huge issue?

You also have to realize that Tinordi and Beaulieu will be ready by then making one of our pricier D men expendable. If Markov's staying healthy then he's going nowhere. I love Gorges but he could very well be on the way out in a couple years depending on Emelin and Diaz and whether we'd rather them.

2 years gives us flexibility and options. Why is that so hard to understand!!!

Hockey is a TEAM sport, if you want to cut your own throat and fight the team you are supposed to be working with you will not get far in this game. Selfish players find this out in a hurry when they sign a deal that handcuffs their owners. Becoming a burden on the team due to your own greed is not an enjoyable experience I would imagine. I wonder how Bryzgalov feels right now knowing he might be bought out and never get another contract.

Ofcourse it is a free market but there is a salary cap in place and your pay effects everyone on your team.

Its not too late to join the union.

I gotta give MB a lot of credit here. He stuck to his guns when most GM's would have given in to the pressure. I really think this deal is great for the Habs and still a good deal for PK.

I also like how PK has handled this whole situation. I would have preferred he was already playing with the team but he tried to get the best deal he could. I don't resent him for that.

I'm just glad this is over and we can focus on what happens on the ice. It's been an exciting start to the season and hopefully PK can jump in and everything still runs smoothly.

Plekanec is now on twitter @plek14

his second tweet was to congratulate the gallys and to thank Subban for signing "that contract".

OMG, Subban's #1 hater congratulates Subban...

If anyone had any doubt that Subban wouldn't be well received by teammates...

TSN is the Maple Leafs' RDS.

Quoting them will just lower this board's IQ. Please don't.

Those insufferable Antichambre yahoos are at it again! Let me see if I've got this straight:

PK should be playing on the 3rd pairing with Bouillon.

PK has too much swagger and that has to change because - apparently - his teammates are not emotionally developed enough to deal with it.

and worst of all...

The first thing that must go is the Triple Low Five. Why? Who the **** knows!!

The fact that some of these opinions are coming from Carbo and Damphousse is even more distressing. Why the hell did I start watching this show again??

Antichambre? Anti-cerveau!!

And our impressionable fans eat it up. They spew this nonsense because there's an audience for it.

If you want to rage (don't know why you'd wanna do that, though), go read the comments on today's article about PK on JournalDeMontreal.com

Seems like all the fairweather, clueless PK Subban-hating morons reunite there. Talking about how PK should've been traded, how classless he is for following his agent's instruction to hold out a bit... oh wait, that sounds just like those guys at l'AC. Well, they've all found their respective soulmates, it seems.

Again, it's so easy to spot someone who's truly an unknowledgable so-called hockey fan. Bases most of his opinions on what they've read the major medias, you know, those people who've been grasping at straws for the past two years, trying to find anything in order to bash Subban. Talking about how much of a locker room cancer he is, etc...

Do you remember this one article in which they've made it seem as if Hal Gill was in a confrontation with the youngster, even though all the people stated otherwise. Was about a year ago. I remember all they did was put Hal's quote out of context and make-believed it against Subban.

@DarrenDreger: Word on the street is @PKSubban1 wants to be called "Subbanator". I'll leave that to his legion of fans.

Meh. Just makes me think of the speech about the "Sherminator" in American Pie 2

Well its classier than the ''Subby The Niggy'' that I've heard in bars this week from douchebros who ironically dress like they are part of a 2005 rap video.

PK is a good nickname. PK = Piqué = husband of Shakira = score!

So in my excitement for the PK signing I made a facebook post celebrating the signing, and then a girl from my elementary school told me that PK's dad was my principal in my junior high school in Toronto (Arlington). Good guy, helped me through some things in my year there. ****ing small world.

how would you just figure that out now, does his dad have a different last name? I didnt call my principal Mr Serge back in the day.

Subban would be smart to take some time to meet with his team mates and tell them he might not be able to completely change but he will try his best to fit better within the room. Then he has to DO IT.

To me that's the first sign that someone is looking to criticize Subban come hell or high water.

Everyone knows Gill was being facetious with his tongue in cheek comments. Well, everyone except some RDS panel members, and their loyal blind mice.
