OK. Here is the clarification.
Gomez $7 million is off the books next year.
If you pay Subban $5.5 to $6 million, then that only leaves $1 to $1.5 million to bring in and sign basically a scrub player like we have become accustomed to seeing here in Montreal.
I see it differently. I think given Subban`s obvious loyalty to the H<abs, he might well have signed an 8 year deal that looked like this: 2-3.75-4-4.25-5-5-5-5 and that would yield a cap hit of $4.25M per year over 8 years. Remember he said he was NOT looking for Doughty money, so even if he was looking to top out at 5.5M, he probably would have settled a bit lower to get a deal at $5M per year tops.
Whereas now, if Subban has two great years, he might cost $6M+ on a long-term deal in two years.
On the other hand, the bridge contract could mean keeping Subban two years longer ultimately, so long as he signs a long-term deal after this one ends. Since defencemen (and goalies) peak later than forwards, this could be a help down the road.
