A rep for WWE sent the following statement to Pro Wrestling Sheet:
John Oliver Ignores Facts
John Oliver is clearly a clever and humorous entertainer, however the subject matter covered in his WWE segment is no laughing matter. Prior to airing, WWE responded to his producers refuting every point in his one-sided presentation. John Oliver simply ignored the facts.
The health and wellness of our performers is the single most important aspect of our business, and we have a comprehensive, longstanding Talent Wellness program.
We invite John Oliver to attend WrestleMania this Sunday to learn more about our company.
I mean they probably did to the producers."We refute these points!"
Provides no information refuting his points.
I mean they probably did to the producers.
“Hey, look, we pay for our talents surgeries and rehabs, former talents get rehab on our dime if they accept it, we have doctors traveling with us so talent have chiropractors/physiotherapists/etc if they need on our dime.”
They’re not in the right, but the segment made it sounds worse than it is. It’s not excusing WWE though. The segment made it sound like it was a 10 on a scale of 0-10 in how bad it is, when in reality it’s probably an 8. Lol, not better by any means, but yeah.
What did I tell you?
The problem is wrestling fans have a tendency to defend the company way more in these media flare-ups as opposed to NFL or NHL fans.
They absolutely should have. And the independent contractor thing is absolute bullshit.Maybe but that doesn't really help the people out there reading the WWE's response. I think they should have highlighted what you said in their response, although as you said, it doesn't cover everything Oliver touched upon.
The two most glaring points which aren't addressed are
1. The independent contractor loophole/scam
2. Health insurance
