Gulfstream (FL):
  • Canceled: Due to an exorbitant amount of rainfall and water damage. I doubt Gulf will open Sunday with the next three days scheduled to be off.
Belterra (OH):
  • Race 4: Jareth (Perry Ouzts/Larry Smith) was sent off 1-to-9 in a reduced field of three and gave 69-year-old Ouzts a win with his lone mount. Ouzts turns 7on July 7. He has won with five of his past eight mounts. He has 7,443 wins which is fifth in North America.

Santa Anita (CA):
  • Race 6: Midland Money (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), a $650,000 Shancelot colt, gave the trainer his second impressive win the past two days with 2-year-olds making debuts. Shancelot, a freshman sire, has seen few (unofficially three) offspring hit the track but one has already produced a victory prior to today.

  • Steve Asmussen is 18 9-0-3 the past two days at Lone Star (TX) and Churchill (KY) combined.
  • Chad Brown combined at Monmouth (NJ) and Belmont/Aqueduct to go 15 5-3-0 today.
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 10: Accede (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Bed o' Roses by a neck.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: $10.78 million which is up 31.7% from the comparable 2023 date. Attendance was noticeable as well as more than 8,000 entered. An appealing day and much success for New Jersey today.
  • Card: 12 races of which three were graded stakes.
  • Javier Castellano-Todd Pletcher combined to win two of the four stakes (including a non-graded).
  • Race 9: Tax Implications (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Eatontown Stakes.
  • Race 10: Tuscan Sky (Javier Castellano-Todd Pletcher) smacked the competition to win the $150,000 Pegasus Stakes.
  • Race 11: Fort Washington (Kendrick Carmouche/Shug McGaughey) and Running Bee (Vincent Cheminaud/Chad Brown) finished in a dead-heat for victory in a three-across-the-wire thriller in the $150,000 Grade 3 Monmouth Stakes.

  • Race 12: Bright Future (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Salvator Mile.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Steve Asmussen entered four of which three won.

Southern Cal dates:
  • Los Al -- June 22 - July 7.
  • Del Mar -- July 20 - September 8.
  • Santa Anita -- September 27 - October 27.

Northern California dates seem to have some cohesion in light of Golden Gate's closing. The fair meets are as follows:
  • Alameda County Fair at Pleasanton -- June 14 - July 7.
  • California State Fair at Sacramento -- July 12 - July 28.
  • Sonoma County at Santa Rosa -- August 2 - August 18.
  • Humboldt County Fair at Ferndale -- August 23 - September 8.
  • Big Fresno Fair at Fresno -- September 13 - October 14.
  • Alameda County Fair at Pleasanton -- October 19 - December 15.

  • Wesley Ward is 28 14-2-2 (50%) with 2-year-olds this year. His lifetime mark is 24% which in itself is exceptional.
  • Wesley Ward is 38% with first-timers in 2024, his lifetime mark is 25%.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Sheldon Russell rode two winners for his wife Brittany. Happy Father's Day!
  • Race 3: Nielson (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) was sent off 1-to-5 and as expected trounced the competition. The $850,000 Curlin colt, transferred from the barn of Bob Baffert, was entered in a $20,000 race at Laurel and broke his maiden. A 101-to-1 shot placed. That was unexpected.
  • Race 4: Major Houlihan (Victor Carrasco/Hugh McMahon) was all hot lips in winning for M*A*S*H fans and anyone else who made hunch plays or legit scores.
  • Race 6: Sweeterthanwhiskey (Alexander Crispin/Georgia Andreadakis) broke last but swooped from back of the pack to win at 13-to-1. There are a few rewarding pleasures in this sport but to have a longshot break last and still win is as exhilarating as it gets.

  • Race 8: Toupie (Jorge Ruiz/Graham Motion) was sent off the favorite and won the $100,000 Stormy Blues Stakes. Parola Secura (J.G. Torrealba/Joe Sharp) placed at 32-to-1. Interesting in that the horse is owned by Wertheimer and Frere who are worth something in the ballpark of $100 billion and have a reclusive reputation as leaders of the House of Chanel and I truly do not recall the most recent time they had a horse at Laurel. Separately, Sharp doesn't ship to Maryland very often. Yet, here we are.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners for the second straight day. He won for six different trainers. He has with 11 of his past 32 mounts. He is the leading rider at the meet which ends June 30.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Finale: Closing day of the meet.
  • Card: 12 races.
  • Leading Jockey: Juan Hernandez with 16 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Phil D'Amato with 11 wins.
  • Race 12: The $1 Pick 6 returned $139,000 to three winners each.
  • Southern California Racing Dates:
  • Los Alamitos -- June 22 - July 7.
  • Del Mar -- July 20 - September 8.
  • Santa Anita -- September 27 - October 27.
  • Del Mar -- October 31 - December 1.

Royal Ascot
Day Two -- Wednesday, June 19

Wednesday brings out the first of four Wesley Ward-trained 2-year-olds scheduled to race at the meet, with Ultima Grace entered in the Queen Mary Stakes, a five-furlong straight-course dash that Ward has won four times. Ultima Grace won a Keeneland dirt sprint in her lone start and has worked forwardly on turf, Ward said.

In Wednesday’s Windsor Castle, Ward runs Honorary American, who earned a trip overseas with a strong workout last week in Kentucky. Two other Americans, Gabaldon and Cheval De Guerre, are among the early Windsor Castle entrants.

Gulfstream will not conduct turf racing until July 5 at the earliest. Tapeta and dirt are the only surfaces until then. Gulf rests the turf with the addition of Tapeta.

Massive wildfires in Ruidoso. Horses have been relocated. With health of humans and equine animals foremost, scheduled racing is questionable at the New Mexico track. One of the nation's best for quarters.
