Two players I would eat glass to have on the Habs...

Last year Monahan

Three years ago Perry

They would lead and teach our headless capons better the 100 Marty's.

I wonder if signing Monahan and RD Montour would have been good signings at the term and cap hits they signed for. For sure they would have helped short term. But long term? There are risks.

And judging by trading Kovacevic and trying to develop Barron, they are thinking long term at the expense of the short term.

I know Monahan was healthy last season, but I wouldn’t have been comfortable committing five years to him with his injury history. I’m assuming Hughes felt the same way. It would’ve been a risk signing somebody like that to term when it could potentially clash with our competing window. I like the Laine move, but I think Hughes dropped the ball not acquiring somebody more reliable to play with some of the younger guys in the top 6. I also think it was a big mistake to come into this season with a green as grass defence. This is the first offseason where I’m questioning Hughes overall decision making a little bit. Not to say I’ve lost faith in him or anything like that yet.

The decisions were definitely made with the long term in mind, even if it meant a bad year this year. Hughes said he didn't want to sign a vet RD which could potentially block the young guys (presumably Reinbacher, Mailloux, Barron) down the line.

He wanted to try to develop Struble, Xhekaj, and Barron, over Kovacevic and Harris, presumably because he felt they had higher long term upside, even if they aren't as good right now.

Okay, had little time tonight to do some numbers crunching. Both on Monahan and other topics. I've been researching goal scoring percentage. More than double goals scored comes from east west passes below the hash marks. Probably why big mobile defensemen so effective. Especially in playoffs. Anyway, I regress, back on topic.

In '22-23 we were 12-11-9 with Monahan. Next year we were 20-21-9. So, 32-32-10, dead .500 with Monahan in lineup.

Without him, in '22-23, 19-34-5. Big drop. In '23-24 10-15-8. This season we are 5-9-2. So, 34-63-15. For a .371% winning percentage without him.

Huge difference, shows importance of a big offensive center who can win faceoffs.

Why you guys crying about Monahan no longer being here? I used to say he was almost just as good as Suzuki and Caufield and I would get laughed at.

It's finally starting to sink in that he was solo carrying all our secondary scoring?

I still approve the trade but he was underappreciated and severely underused. His best linemate was a 20 game rookie Slafkovsky.

Makes you wonder how much more value we could have gotten if we had a decent player to compliment him. No way for me to prove this but I really felt he looked frustrated/unmotivated at times with the quality of players he was paired him with.

I approve the trade because of the contract he was given by Columbus, but he was a pretty big loss. He’s the exact kind of veteran you want to have around a team like this.

I think his value was capped due to his being made of glass. No playoff team would treat his acquisition as anything more than secondary scoring... which is what he is.

Last year for MTL he scored 35 in 49 (58 pt pace), for WPG he scored 24 in 34 (57 pt pace)... and this year he has 11 in 15 (60 pt pace). Remarkably consistent.

This is quite an impressive impact and shows us how much we miss a quality second line C.

this year, for sure. three or four years from now - yikes. plus, he was a non factor for the jets in the last year playoffs.
Thank goodness I am not watching potential future parallel universe hockey and only 2024 real-world crappy hockey. Dodged a bullet there.

Being content with habs sucking more than ever because Monahan will eventually suck too does not add up for me.

Ironically, Michael Hage, the pick they traded up for with the 1st pick they got when they traded away Monahan may be that 2nd line C. I like that trade, especially considering how things could look when Hage is stepping into that role at a time when Monahan is getting to the end of his career.

The problem of course is that is at least a couple years away. In the meantime, not having such a player is definitely making it difficult for anybody to play to their potential on the 2nd line and I fear that will continue when Laine starts to play.

What are you talking about? Monahan sucks now. At least in the playoffs. If he couldn't do anything on a good team in the playoffs he isn't much use.

100%

For those who are saying that they knew we should have kept him or that he was better than anybody etc... Everybody loved Monahan...it was never the question. He had serious injuries in the past and was barely ever able to play a full season. It was very risky offering him a contract that long and frankly, it still is. A healthy Monahan is a fantastic hockey player and would be a stabilizing force on any team, but especially on a team as young as the Habs.

this is exactly how bergevin watched hockey universe when he signed gallagher and anderson for too much and too long.
