Two players I would eat glass to have on the Habs...

Last year Monahan

Three years ago Perry

They would lead and teach our headless capons better the 100 Marty's.

I wonder if signing Monahan and RD Montour would have been good signings at the term and cap hits they signed for. For sure they would have helped short term. But long term? There are risks.

And judging by trading Kovacevic and trying to develop Barron, they are thinking long term at the expense of the short term.

I know Monahan was healthy last season, but I wouldn’t have been comfortable committing five years to him with his injury history. I’m assuming Hughes felt the same way. It would’ve been a risk signing somebody like that to term when it could potentially clash with our competing window. I like the Laine move, but I think Hughes dropped the ball not acquiring somebody more reliable to play with some of the younger guys in the top 6. I also think it was a big mistake to come into this season with a green as grass defence. This is the first offseason where I’m questioning Hughes overall decision making a little bit. Not to say I’ve lost faith in him or anything like that yet.

The decisions were definitely made with the long term in mind, even if it meant a bad year this year. Hughes said he didn't want to sign a vet RD which could potentially block the young guys (presumably Reinbacher, Mailloux, Barron) down the line.

He wanted to try to develop Struble, Xhekaj, and Barron, over Kovacevic and Harris, presumably because he felt they had higher long term upside, even if they aren't as good right now.

Okay, had little time tonight to do some numbers crunching. Both on Monahan and other topics. I've been researching goal scoring percentage. More than double goals scored comes from east west passes below the hash marks. Probably why big mobile defensemen so effective. Especially in playoffs. Anyway, I regress, back on topic.

In '22-23 we were 12-11-9 with Monahan. Next year we were 20-21-9. So, 32-32-10, dead .500 with Monahan in lineup.

Without him, in '22-23, 19-34-5. Big drop. In '23-24 10-15-8. This season we are 5-9-2. So, 34-63-15. For a .371% winning percentage without him.

Huge difference, shows importance of a big offensive center who can win faceoffs.

Why you guys crying about Monahan no longer being here? I used to say he was almost just as good as Suzuki and Caufield and I would get laughed at.

It's finally starting to sink in that he was solo carrying all our secondary scoring?

I still approve the trade but he was underappreciated and severely underused. His best linemate was a 20 game rookie Slafkovsky.

Makes you wonder how much more value we could have gotten if we had a decent player to compliment him. No way for me to prove this but I really felt he looked frustrated/unmotivated at times with the quality of players he was paired him with.
