any proposal to the leafs is a troll attempt from their fan base, it's annoying.

Personally, I would avoid attacking any team's fan base. When you see offers like this, it's hard not to comment and I have fell into that trap as well but when you do comment, you only fueling the fire.

The physiological aspects to chat forums online is interesting. It's weird how some have belittle focus and probably don't type words like they would talk to your face. It's become a culture to belittle others cause someone tried that to you before. Two wrongs don't make a right though. I'm trying to avoid falling into that but man... it's difficult.

Foolish trade for Calgary as AM34 is going home to Arizona at UFA

I like the idea of acquiring Monahan + Gaudreau, just not for Matthews. Maybe for Tavares.

You forgot to include Jonathan Toews and Steven Stamkos who also did the same thing.
I mean, I could have delved a bit deeper, but yeah. It's not as if franchise players up and leave all the time. Since its the leafs though and the team and city will literally cause players to spiral into a deep unending depression obviously all of them want out. Especially Matthews, who would clearly want to move to the vibrant multicultural mixing pot of Scottsdale, Arizona.. . Riiiiiggghhhhtttttt.

That would be a bit like the Leafs offering us Kerfoot and Johnsson for Monahan. The Leafs would be dumb to trade Matthews unless it's for Mackinnon, McDavid or Barkov.

Bang on. Outside of those 3 and eichel, there's not alot of players that move the needle for matthews

Yeah, I mean it's not like crosby, backstrom, Patrick kane, evgeni malkin, zetterberg, and both sedins took 5yrs or less on their 2nd contracts. We saw how they all bailed too right?!
You forgot to include Jonathan Toews, Steven Stamkos, and Victor Hedman who also did the same thing.
None of those players signed their 2nd contracts under the current CBA.

In the current CBA, how many elite players signed <=5 year deals that weren't structured as bridge deals?

My argument wasn't in regards to the cba or how deals were structured. The argument was that it's extremely atypical for homegrown superstar players to leave their teams. History has shown that players will take deals that bring them to ufa and they more often than not stay on their teams.

Sebastian Aho re-signed for 5 years under the current CBA since he agreed to that offer sheet from Montreal.

So your counterexample to dispute the notion that Matthews' contract indicates flight risk is a player who willingly signed a contract with another team??

Okay then.

This is one of the few proposals that would make me trade Gaudreau as a Flames fan.

Mathews most points in a season is actually 80. While Monahans is 82, and Gaudreaus is 99.

Leafs fans can be seriously difficult to take seriously. Unless its a joke im missing?
80 points in a pandemic-shortened 70 games this year. On pace for 93 over a full season, with an outside chance at getting close to 100.

You forgot that part.

How did the current CBA affect those five year deals? What changed that made them less desirable? Are any of the mentioned deals illegal under the current CBA? You're going to have to be more specific.

I don't know if anything did, I am more using that as a proxy for shifting trends.

However, this might be part of the cause:

"Around 4:45 am EST on January 6, after approximately 16 continuous hours of negotiating, a tentative deal was reached on a new collective bargaining agreement to end the lockout. The terms included a limit of eight years on contract extensions and seven years on new contracts"
2012–13 NHL lockout - Wikipedia

This may have put a premium on longer term RFA deals. Before, there was no such precedent. That may be why its become the gold standard.

This proposal is horrendous for Toronto. The only way a player like Matthews gets traded for lesser parts is if they demand out in the midst of some scandal.

I also think Flames fans should prepare themselves for Gaudreau potentially getting traded. I see the Hall talk as more than just rumours. As far as asset management goes, signing Hall and trading Gaudreau for a #1 RW and/or a big future asset is solid.
