With the rumor floating around for Monahan + Gaudreau, who says no ?

Cap wise it fits both team after the free agency, and Calgary can go after a goalie this fall.
both Toronto and Calgary upgrade their top 6 with:

Hyman/Tavares/Marner
Gaudreau/Monahan/Nylander

Tkachuk/Matthews/Lindholm
Mangiapane/Backlund or Bennett/Dube

Toronto needs D, NO WAY Toronto does this.

Having said that, I don't think Auston Matthews will be a Leafs whe his contract is up.

I felt like I was taking crazy pills, what part of that was subtle lmao

I unironically like Monahan, always have. Wouldn't move Matthews for him but he's a good 2C.
Well obviously, for Calgary to acquire Matthews it would have to be Tkachuk as the main piece going back, add in probably Lindholm or Andersson then add 19th OA. Unfortunately that would devastate the Flames depth and drastically weaken Toronto's offense so it's incredibly unrealistic

There are combinations of two players on one team to whom the Leafs say yes, but these two? Ridiculous.
But, those players won‘t be offered.

These are two very valuable pieces from the Flames but the Leafs say no quicker than the Flames can finish their sentence. You don't trade a Matthews for two very clearly lesser players, you trade him 1 for 1 for a player of equal/greater value which just won't happen.

Maybe Gio + 3rd for Matthews?
I understand getting Monahan is a good piece as a number 2C, but where does Gaudreau fit? I like Geo, but isn’t he coming 37?
Matthews is top five in the league, and will be for the next decade. If I’m TO I’m not trading that elite a talent, unless I’m getting an equal centre to Monahan (youngish top quality 2C) and a 27 year old D man as good as Geo used to be. Hell, even then I’d be wondering. IMO Matthews is the best Leaf since the Cup teams of the 60’s?

So the Leafs trades it's most valuable player it still doesn't help them upgrade their defence.

Below is more an example that I would think might work to help solve the problems for the Leafs.

Again this is just an example (not that either team would do this):

Matthews for Larkin + Seider.

Yes, that’s more the type of return the Leafs need. (Taking a chance on Seider though).

No Idea why the leafs would even think about this... Matthews is one of the top 10 players in this league and is still very young, putting up 100+ points a season. What would Monhan Gaudreau bring to them ?

Yeah he's never done that nor paced for it, might do it in the future. Are you trying to fish for Leaf haters? :)

But yeah, brutal for the Leafs. I mean, at least if it was Marner instead of Matthews, the Leafs would gain Monahan but even then he would get stuck on the 3rd line?

I get that Cgy is looking for a center, but they have to come to the realization that there's probably no center better than Monahan who's gonna be available for a trade. Especially not a top young C.

Gio would be Leafs best defenseman since Slaming. They would become cup favourites instantly. A Tronna boy playing for the team he cheered for as a kid. Toronto needs to add Nylander but they can make it happen.

leafs say no easily. the absolutely massive offer it would take to pry Matthews out of TO would look something like this

Tkachuk
Monahan
Hanifin
Andersson
plus more

Are you really that high on Seider?

I think I am just high.

I think the Leafs do need to take a hit at the forward position, fix structural cap constraits and potentially address the d position long term. That is a big win for Toronto if that can be achieved.

Seider has the potential to be great in my opinion. This type of trade has a lot of risk for Toronto.
