Back in the day, I wanted Provorov instead of Werenski in the draft. Today, I do feel this improves the team, and think that Provorov's decline is too personally charged to him rather than the Flyers as a whole- I think he's an ideal 2nd pairing defenseman if he can regain his form, but I wish I could feel as happy about this as I would have back in 2015.
The off-ice and PR controversies that come along with this acquisition are really just a damn shame. Otherwise I would be really happy with it, and pretty confident that he will turn around his play. He definitely needed a change of scenery.
Will be curious to see how a change of scenery affects his play. Clearly seemed over Philly. His most common partners last year in order were 22 year old Cam York-DeAngelo-Ristolainen. Id hope we can put him in a better position and more insulated behind Werenski.
Is the second pairing statement a fan perception as he lead the Flyers in minutes last season? Looks like his last couple of seasons have been somewhat forgettable. Doesn't seem like much more than a depth move, which is fine if pricey.
From a strictly hockey standpoint. I like this trade. He and Z are somewhat interchangeable, with Z taking a fair share of the heavy minutes. I wouldn't mind if we made a UFA D signing though. This D could look completely different by the time the season starts..
I remember some years ago when Kekäläinen said it was important to get the right kind of people for the team, hockey skills aren't everything. He came out as a guy who is a good judge of character. It's time to prove that everybody is wrong and you are right Jarmo.
#22 pick on a great year + 2nd for Provorov at 4.5m for 2 years, who'll be a UFA after that.
The Jarmo out train I hopped on last week is still going strong. The guy has gone from saying they'll build build a contender the right way to these desperate moves that'll do nothing for actually winning the cup. Oh, and Provorov sucks ass as a person.

We've seen it and more from him in the past. Jarmo must believe a move will be good and he can regain that form. He also played on a terrible team with other poor partners. It would be like saying Gavrikov was less than he is because he was forced to play above his ability this year.

Provorov played a lot of minutes but the guy getting the big offensive role and I'm guessing the more attention from opponents was Sanheim, who has been their better D for a few years.
So Provorov might play slightly fewer minutes for Columbus but I'm guessing it will be a similar set up where Werenski takes the place of Sanheim. And Provorov will probably be paired with a similar player to York in either Boqvist or the very green Jiricek. And if not them, then someone worse.
This could be a fantastic change of scenery trade, but it won't be because our lineup is easier to play in.

Wait .. how in the world are some posters bitching about this move today ? We traded Korpi and Gav, who were walking for nothing , for a 1st rounder . You’re telling me that moving this pick at 22, and a 2nd in 24-25 is a bad trade in getting Provorov at 4.7 mill per year next 2 seasons . Now you’re looking at a d core of Werenski , Provorov , Jiricek, Boquist , Peeke and Gud .. with Svozil, Culemans, knocking on the door .

My thoughts exactly. Yadda yadda we can't know their personalities and true opinions and character from the media reports and whatever, but the optics are not good at all on this front. Either this is a roaring success or Jarmo and the FO deserve what they're getting.
i'm surprised (and frustrated) that they actually went through with that given the pride stuff from last year – but strictly speaking from an on-ice perspective here: the price for him, given the role he will be playing here, is perfectly reasonable.
the 22nd overall pick is not nearly as valuable of a piece as people seem to think it is. the second rounder was for the retention.
he was mediocre the last couple years in philly playing a top pairing role on a bad team. that's impacted his underlying advanced stats, which in turn shaped the perception of him as a bad player. you'd think the fan base that went through that same narrative with guys like seth jones and vlad gavrikov would know better than to take it at face value here.
what the jackets are getting here is a cost-controlled second pair defenseman who will, at minimum, improve the defensive core and buy them time to develop guys like svozil and mateychuk.
the alternative was to overpay (both in dollars and term) for a different defenseman in a weak free agent class.
Two of The Athletic’s writers give Columbus D+ on the trade. SiriusXM analyst rated us coming in 3rd on the trade. But Jarmo always wins trades and the hometown board seems happy. Maybe Prov will cease to suck. I’m just thrilled to know that in the world according to Jarmo our back end with Gud and Prov will lead us to the promise land.

Yeah, I’m not sure why anyone would complain as most people actually wanted that pick traded for a top 4 LHD. I guess some people truly believed we’re getting Devon Toews

Sanheim's icetime dropped this year and was paired with Ristolainen so not surprisingly he didnt show the best either. Being on a bad team they both started in unfavorable situations often, seems like DeAngelo was the one Torts really tried to protect.
Im just hopeful that a healthy forward group with some additions takes the strain off the defense which makes everyones life better

the flyers have been extremely bad the last two years.
vladislav gavrikov – a similar player in many ways – also had stats (traditional and advanced) that looked really bad because he was playing a big role with bad partners on an awful team. those stats didn't reflect how good the actual player was, and he thrived as soon as he went to a team with a better structure/team.
the babcock hire + his mobility + the high likeihood for him to be paired with an aggressive offensive defenseman (jiricek or boqvist) actually set the stage for that $4.75m to look like a bargain for a couple years imo.

In reality, even Werenski wasn’t at his best metrics last couple of years and the Flyers just like CBJ were terrible, once the team will get going, we will appreciate having such a solid and still young top 4 on LHD. After all, Provorov absolutely showed he can be a top 2 guy in this league during his career.

If it was just the player without the off-ice garbage, I would be thrilled. I legitimately believe he's going to make this team better on the ice.
It's the rest I don't care for. Particularly coming so quickly after the question marks with Babcock. It could work out exceptionally for us and I hope it does, but that's two dubious calls back to back and so I'm concerned.

"Recently, reports from agents, management, teammates and scouts have labeled Flyers defenceman Ivan Provorov as a locker room cancer."
"Furthermore, in his recent press conference, he threw his teammates under the bus, and did not take accountability. His teammates and management are obviously upset with this. It has also come to light that he and his girlfriend are really into social media and are obsessed with checking for negative comments directed towards Provorov."
The crappiness of the blog aside, this has been known in Flyerdom for a long time. His play fell off a cliff over the last three seasons, as did his attitude: prickly and dismissive in interviews, awful body language on the ice, murmurs that he is hard to deal with. The peak of that was one week in January where:
1. He was present but reportedly non-participatory during the team's "Casino Night" fan event, where he just hung out with his girlfriend in a corner and didn't engage with fans or teammates.
2. Reports came out a couple days after that night that the team was looking to trade him
3. The next day, he sat out of the Pride Night pregame skate
The Pride Night incident, more than anything, seemed like a f***-you from him to the franchise based on the timing. Granted, the Flyers are a shitshow and it's probably hard to give a damn when everyone you work for is a dunce. But Provorov's performance problems are not a lack of talent: They're mindset and attitude. So CBJ better be one hell of a fresh start.

I think that's a pretty polarizing statement. Truth is we have no idea how these moves will impact the team in reality. But on paper, we just upgraded from Brad Larsen to one of the most successful coaches in NHL history, and made a move to adequately fill the biggest hole in our defense, if not the entire roster.
I can understand not liking the moves due to the people involved, I don't particularly either, but that doesn't mean it won't lead to success.
