Mobile GDT: Devils @ Sharks, 4 PM ET, MSGSN (if you somehow manage to still have it)

Putting out 3rd/4th lines on the shift before OT is absolutely customary practice. Only gets second-guessed when it doesn't work.

What the heck does this mean?

If you're a betting man, do those look like factoids that give you confidence that this team can make a long run?

Yes yes there are examples of teams that have done some really poor things in the regular season that went on to have a lot of playoff success. There are exceptions to everything.
You shouldn’t forecast playoff success for any team until after the deadline. There are countless examples of teams making in-season moves (big and small) that change the outlook of a team. Post-deadline results mean more because that’s the team you have in the playoffs. This stretch assures additional moves are going to be made.

Though the other thing is this stretch may mean a tougher path in the playoffs.

Tatar with Jack might actually be okay and possibly even better than Palat with Jack

But then you have Palat in the bottom 6 and he'll likely be every bit as useless down there as those other guys are. Jack and Bratt are the only thing keeping his corpse still walking.

Palat anywhere below where he's playing probably effectively sticks the knife through the heart or brain.

So you're probably getting the same result.

I feel like a guy like Granlund has to be a priority to add. Being able to pop him into a 3c role and letting Haula sit on the 4th line would be amazing. Really want a guy who can push some offense in the bottom 6 and maybe help unlock Mercer a bit

Yes, this team can absolutely, without any doubt, make a run. Not a single team in the east looks unbeatable. End of story.
This team looks way too inconsistent to make a run. Absolutely several other teams look better in totality and could dispatch them. End of story.

See I can do that too.

I'm not projecting. I'm speaking on as things stand today. Obviously if things change then my outlook changes.

Going by Hockeyviz’s first round matchup probabilities going into today the odds at winning the division we’re about 24% today’s results probably brings down to the 18-20% range.
How about our odds for 2nd place and 3rd place?

I don't like using hockeyviz, only because I don't know how to access the most recent results and I always open the page on some past results and have to fast forward several days to get to the current date every time I go there.

But I think we were like 39% to finish in 2nd and 38% to finish in 3rd on moneypuck coming into today. I'd have to think today's results swapped those numbers, And whatever happens with the Canes tonight will have an effect.

No interest in Granlund. Granlund's raw production is inflated by the PP and playing 21 minutes a night. You're paying the price for a guy on a 70 pt pace that won't be anywhere near a 70 pt pace on your team. He has the same amount of 5v5 pts as Hall and Hall isn't one of the absolute worst defensive forwards in the league. Want absolutely nothing to do with Granlund.

Will obviously depend a lot on the Canes/Wild game tonight and how the Canes win. Regulation/OT win will probably drop it down a ton

Guy looked cooked for the Pens years ago before he landed on SJ where he eats a ton of minutes. Gives PA Parenteau vibes when we had him that one year and he was doing well because no one else could f***ing score, lol.

Hockeyviz doesn’t give first/second/third place chances. But going into today an implied 63% chance of falling in the 2/3 matchups.

The exact thing that happened is the worry with playing those guys late which is the lack of foot speed and SJ turning them and going the other way for a late chance. Again, a lot of bullshit happened on the way to the goal being scored but yeah lol

Yeah definitely wasn't the only factor with the red/linesman blocking the clear practically twice, but I think I am just more livid that the team (or guys on the ice) legit thought having all 3 forwards engaged deep in the corner was a good idea in SJ zone when they just had to play a nicer defensive structure to manage the puck for the last minute and just not let SJ break through on a counter.

Zero IQ on the ice by that group. The Ds also know the puck will come out and they still caught on a rush back that led to that crap that followed

They're still 5th in P% in the East while being on a L4, they're not gonna stay this bad the whole year lmao. This is where Fitz's being complacent can't kick in or else they're actually toast.

This road trip certainly feels much more demoralizing because of who we lost to. Particularly Anaheim and San Jose.

If this was an East coast road trip and we just went 0-4-0 against Carolina, Washington, Tampa Bay and Florida, this would be much easier to swallow than going 0-4-0 against Carolina, Anaheim, LA and San Jose.

Gustav Nyquist and RoR. Pay the price to buy some multi year retention on RoR. Tatar likely has to go.

Nyquist-Jack-Bratt
Noesen-Nico-Meier
Cotter-ROR-Mercer
Palat-Haula-Lazar
Luke-Pesce
Siegs-Hamilton
Dillon-Kovacevic
Markstrom
Allen

Bastian
Mac
Nemec (for playoffs)

There are not a lot of options for a 3c, and I think I'd rather target that than a winger. I don't think Gourde is going to drive offense in the bottom 6. Unless there's a winger available that will actually drive a line offensively in the bottom 6. I'm trying to think of another center who may be available who may actually push some offense

I didn't say they would be this bad all season. If that were to happen they'd sink to WC or worse.

I'm speaking with the 42 games in totality...as of now what I've seen doesn't inspire a ton of confidence in a long run. Like I said, if things change at some point and they show me more for a consistent stretch (whether that's due to roster adjustments or whatever else) then I'll change my tune.

I hate that I’m right about this so much, but it was so easy to see another goal coming for them to take the lead after Cotter tied it.

I figured it would come with maybe 5 or even 7 minutes left rather than 30 seconds.

The fact it was in our zone so much for the last 2-3 minutes (and much of the time before that) was cause for a major alarm.

They're somewhere in between this stretch and the one right before Christmas, can't get too high or low on a team due to a recent stretch. If they can find a happy medium, they'll be a tough out granted Fitz makes the right moves and we don't get headcase Markstrom in April. A decent Markstrom is better than most of the playoff goalies to begin with anyway.

Also for funsies Hall has a higher 5v5 P/60 than Jack and Nico. Even raw 5v5 pts he's only 2 back of Nico and 4 back of Jack. Timo and Zetterlund also have the same 5v5 P/60 and total 5v5 pts. Zetterlund also has more primary pts Timo obviously still the better player but I also wholeheartedly believe we never should've made that deal if it included Zetterlund.

And Granlund is not an option for a 3C. You don't want your 3C to be a blackhole defensively. I've stayed pretty firm on Hall being the guy. The only issue I have with Hall is that he's another guy that isn't a great finisher but he is a guy that will drive offense for the 3rd line.

I hate to be that asshole, but I'm totally feeling a Cody Ceci game winner in regulation.

Or some other bum we didn't realize was still in the league. How about Jan Rutta? How about Vlasic himself?
Jesus Christ.

It’s actually pathetic that it was Ceci.

I didn’t even realize it was indeed Cody Ceci who scored the game winner. I posted that 20 minutes before the end of regulation.

That was the most painful Nostradamus moment I’ve had that can remember.
