Proposal: MN-NYI

Horvat is 30 years old, with 6 years left on his contract.
Rossi is 23 years old

They put up similar production this year and Horvat's production last year wasn't that much higher than this year.

Horvat is ideal right now. But sounds like a bad trade adding a plus when you think about the future.

If Anders Lee is trending towards 25 goals & NYI are out, he'll bring back something worthwhile at the deadline. No need to deal him in the summer. NYI need some big guys up front.
It was more so instead of the ongoing obsession with the Islanders trading everyone in the true core away instead of trading Lee. If it’s up to me, I’m moving the contracts Lou signed that might hinder the ability of the team to move forward. Lee id keep over Pelech, Mayfield, Cizikas, Maclean, Engvall and Duclair (and Pageau to an extent) aka the names that should be looked at for the retool.

The second best course of action would be acquiring Jean-Gabriel Pageau for some form of a draft pick/prospect.
The Isles are thin up the middle already especially after trading Nelson. They are far more likely to trade Pageau who is on an expirating contract rather than their first line center. Yes, Rossi is a center but he doesn’t project to a first line player.

If that doesn’t make sense for the Wild that’s fine.

There are things to like about Horvat, but he is 7 years older than Rossi, and makes 8.5M. This trade could look really, really bad in a couple of years for MN.

Unfortunately, whatever trade we end up making that sends Rossi away is probably going to end up looking really bad in a few years for MN. That's the reality of trading away a guy like Rossi.

You’re not telling me anything I don’t know. Personally I’d look at moving Cizikas since he has no protection and more term. Pageau ultimately stays and becomes the 4C with Richie stepping into the 3C role to learn. Then come next summer, they’re not stuck with a declining 4C for a few more seasons as well as the old guard going and the new one starting to take shape.

I think it's possible that Pageau and Barzal end up on a line together along with Lee or Holmstrom. It makes sense - Pageau can't really play C these days, but he can win faceoffs. It's a good match.

It would look worse to lose prime years of window without a center with jam. If NYI were breaking it down (I don't think they are), lots of teams with open windows would be interested and imo the fit is absolutely there for the Wild. But not for the Islanders.

We already have Eriksson Ek. What we really need is an offensively skilled center to unlock Kaprizov, just like Rossi did for the first 37 games when Kaprizov was on pace for the Hart trophy.

Okay.

Not a fit for either team then.

Well it's probably a fit for Guerin still, think he'd prefer to have all his centers play like Ek or Horvat than necessarily be like a Rossi or Barzal type. I just don't agree with him.

Horvat has "jam"? Good skater, great on FO's, decent, but not great defensively. Not even close to JEE in terms of defense and physicality. Again, good player, but an expensive player who is leaving his best years, while Rossi is entering his.

Bad deal for MN.

I’d also like to lose Cizikas and frankly would’ve preferred he didn’t get the Lou special deal, longer term with less AAV.

Nevertheless here we are and in my mind Cizikas has negative value despite some love that remains with a segment of Isles fans.

What happened to Minnesota signing Brock Nelson?
Amongst fans we’ve mostly blocked the idea out. In reality it will probably happen. I guess I’m not going too be upset about it, but I’m worried about the term and in general think we need to get younger. Hynes loves his vets tho

The only way it makes sense to sign Brock is at absolute most a 3 year deal (for lower AAV purposes) but 2 is ideal. Outside of that, a team is shooting themselves in the foot. I understand the appeal for the somewhat hometown guy (eventhough he’s from borderline Canada) to cold town for the end but that’s really it at this point.
