You said we need "more people who play sports." You think if we just hired more "people who play sports" that pitchers would stop trying to maximize their spin rates, that hitters would stop worrying about launch angles and exit velocities and just play ball? That cat's out of the bag. And it's not because of people who haven't played sports.
The analytics community obviously isn't packed with former athletes, but it's been adopted by them. Guys like Alex Cora, Kevin Cash, Craig Counsell, AJ Hinch, Gabe Kapler, etc., those are all guys who played the game and who absolutely embrace data-driven approaches to managing. Even a lot of the older guys understand that an analytical approach gives them the edge.
For the most part the guys that are playing now understand the need to embrace the data and approach things in a different way. The guys playing now will be the next wave of managers in 10 years, and the trend will continue. It's not a matter of finding people who played the game, since the game has fundamentally changed.
I don't exactly enjoy baseball now the way I used to, but it's the guys who actually play who made the decision to change the way they approach the game who have gotten us here.
i get what your saying. And your right, the game is never going back unless rule changes are made which alters the game.
It sucks. However, it is all because of the analytics and non athletes that started this mess. Athletes just want to win and will use whatever advantage they can get.
