OT: MLB Thread 2025

Looks like Aaron Judge is coasting now. After 3 homeruns and 7 RBIs in his first 3 at bats today he has only hit a double with 1 rbi in his next 2 at bats. :D

Yankees playing defense like the Rangers and eyeing putting up a score like the Knicks

I had the same thought earlier. Like, I love all the scoring and the HRs, but 5 errors for 4 unearned runs? After basically getting mocked by the team that beat them in the World Series for that same sloppy defense? You'd think they'd have cleaned that up a bit.

Are those bats the Yanks are using legal? I dont know?
But what difference does it make? Everybody will start using them.
I think it remains to be seen how effective it actually is.

Only 2 of the 9 homeruns yesterday were hit by players using the new bats. Most of the lineup is not even using them.

Technically, the bat doesn't even need to have a handle. MLB has no rule on bat tapering and you could make the entire bat the barrel if you wanted to. Jeff McNeil uses a thiccboy.

There's also no weight limit. If you can swing it, you can use it.

There's only three rules: length, material, and maximum thickness, with no specification on where thick part is.

Yeah, this is the big stipulation. Not a large enough sample size for them to get the hate they are getting from pitchers.

Also, players are acting like the Yankees are the first to do this. Bellinger came out and said the Cubs did this last season, just didn't have as refined a design as the Yankees apparently do.

3.02(a): The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood.

Yeah, this rule leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

Also, pitchers are little cry baby bitches that get away all of their velocity and spin training to f*** up batters for the longest time. About time they get a taste of their own medicine and there is some push-back on the arms race. Wide receivers of baseball in terms of complaints. Pitch better, idiots. Pick your spots better. No wonder Megill is only a reliever. None of these players know how to read the rules. Must have missed when the MLB approved of this bat design for only the Yankees and not the other teams in the league.

This whole thing is a nothing-burger. Players have always been able to use custom bats as long as it's not excessive. If Nestor didn't get tee'd off yesterday, or if this exact score happened in like...a random July game, no one would be having this conversation. Heck, if this happened to the Brewers in a game against the Tigers, this wouldn't have been big news outside of the score.

Pitchers: "we're not gonna let you do anything but hit homeruns."

Batters: "I guess we'll get better at hitting homeruns then."

Pitchers: *confused Tommy John noises*

This is just the natural conclusion to the pitching war without allowing cybernetic augments. Pitchers put themselves into early retirement just because batters are making their bats a quarter of an inch thicker for a 4 inch segment of the bat.

the Yankees will have 46 RBIs in July and by then this whole conversation will be as if it never happened

Ryan Jeffers on the Twins was using a torpedo bat today and went 0-4 lmao

Volpe even said in an interview it's probably just a placebo. People can point to Volpe's noticeably higher exit velo (it's definitely there) but it was there in ST too along with a noticeably faster swing speed.

Jazz has an impossible amount of pure power for such a skinny guy and always had pop too. It's really not weird that we're seeing some really early results.

It's 3 f***in games in a 162 game season. The Yankees aren't going to have a 1.682 team OPS all year lmao. calm down!!!

They are unambiguously legal and conform to MLB rules on bat construction. Literally no nuance.

It only took the Yanks a couple days to be more exciting than the Rangers have been all season. I might watch regular season baseball this year for the first time since Jeter’s last year.

Just saw guys on multiple teams were using bats like the "torpedo" bats last season. Some do not like the feel. Francisco Lindor tried it last year for the Mets. While not a "torpedo" bat I remember thinking George Foster's bat looked shaped a little differently decades ago. Fat at the end while the handle was very slim.
