If we take that Soto money and just use it to buy like, a whole team, it's not the worst outcome.
assuming Hill comes back the yankees have upgraded their pitching to top 5 in the league which is great. pushing Rodon down to #3 starter (#4? Gil?) is a great move and having a setup-close duo of Weaver-Williams is unmatched in the league.
their lack of pop is not good though. without Soto Judge will get pitched around a lot and we need to upgrade Torres too, who's leadoff offense will be very hard to replicate from what's available.
the Yankees, currently, are projected to have the third best lineup in WAR behind the Dodgers and Braves. Missing a 1B and 3B (Oswaldo/Peraza/DJL/Rice are project to be platooning there). There's a lot of room for improvement but I just don't know what you do here that's financially and futurely smart.
Alonso is a non starter imo, will be too expensive, he sucks eggs defensively, and we'll lose more picks (lost one signing Fried). I'd blow my brains out if we bring that useless f*** Santander here at 1B where he's never even played. Walker is old and wants a long deal and would cost another pick but he's my ideal target IMO. I've talked myself into liking Bregman, relatively, but he would be a pretty rough offensive option here. He can't hit for shit in YS and his walk rate torpedoed this year.
If we went the Bregman/Walker route, which would
really hurt in the long term, that's probably the best chance the Yankees have at fielding a complete team and winning the WS. They'd have a top 5 defensive infield in the majors and still have a team of above average batters, if Volpe and Wells can add a little more. I'm not totally in love with it but a better option has yet to present itself
Also convince Sasaki that NY is actually a small market and bring him over <3
