Hanley crushed one and has looked great at 1st again today.....I might be getting excited about him??? He's been hitting inside heat again so hopefully that continues- he had been great at it before struggling in a major way last year. Probably the shoulder in hindsight

Most likely the largest crowds the Red Sox will play before all season.

The Expos did not die because of lack of fan support but horrific ownership that made Dollar Bill Wirtz look good. The last straw was when they traded Pedro to the Red Sox for a bag of balls.

Stade Olympique was an awful place to watch a game. The roof was sealed and people in Quebec were being asked to watch games INDOORS with out air conditioning. If they build a new stadium like Target Field in Minneapolis they will do just fine if they get a team again and I believe they will.

And have the Expos play in AL East :naughty:

I appreciate what you said. It feels good to see that some people actually know why we lost our team.

I didn't think Shaw winning that job was a real possibility and I figured Sandoval would get it just because of his contract. I'm glad I was wrong. It's good to see the team ignoring the politics and going with the best option.

Farrell is already making decisions in best interest of his job, it's not about (hurt) feelings anymore. You gotta realize that he's on a very short leash, Lovullo is waiting in the wings.

Shaw is very deserving of this chance, he should get enough leeway in the first few weeks without having to fear being benched.

Well, maybe the problem gets solved by Panda being traded but I doubt it. Sandoval for Shields would on paper look doable, but I am a) not sure the Padres would do it without getting the 14m difference in contracts and another useful prospect back and b) Shields would be such a good fit in Fenway. I probably pull the trigger if it' on the table but only straight up + the 14m difference.

maybe he could even play his first full year since 2012!

He's 28 years old and is the least instinctual player in the league IMO. He had almost 290 ab's to do something last year and he didn't do a helluva whole lot even though he picked it up a bit late. While that isn't a huge opportunity it certainly isn't unfair treatment, especially considering he didn't really produce all that much while in Pawtucket. I'm sure he will get his opportunity this season eventually. It just so happens the first series of the season is against a team that features the hardest throwing group of righties in the AL and he has demonstrated an inability to hit them to this point. Like bottom 5 in the league bad. Brock Holt meanwhile is in the top 25% of the league against hard throwing righties. I wouldn't read too much into this as a permanent move. If it is a permanent move Im with you and I disagree with it but it's completely justifiable for the beginning of this season considering the opposition, especially when Castillo didn't do anything to further his case this spring.

As for comparisons to Bradley and Betts, both were a lot younger than Castillo. Betts also was a much better hitter/player in almost every respect including approach and that was very apparent. On top of that he had nothing left to prove at the AAA level and didn't have any flaws in his mechanics or swing. Bradley on the other hand was playing a transcendent center field but even then he was sent down to refine his swing mechanics and was forced to produce in Pawtucket before returning. His value will always be more tied to his glove at a premium position rather than his bat anyway though.

Tl;dr I agree with you that Rusney should be the starter eventually but I am behind the Sox with their decision for the opening series and perhaps a lot of April.

I certainly agree Rusney hasn't helped his case in the spring. Pretty ugly stuff. But then, he seems to me a slow starter. Hopefully.

Seemed to me he always had the tools to succeed at first (I mean, he's a former infielder...). Just not he mobility to cover an expanse in OF

Also, removing the physical strain of tracking balls in the OF, inning after inning, will mean he'll be even stronger at the plate.

I'd do it. I don't think Shields will be a top pitcher for us, but he'll be a solid guy who will give us 180K+ and 180 innings, and if our bats are good this year, some wins down the stretch. I'd like to see him here. Certainly trust him more than "Meltdown" Clay.

Don't know if this got posted or not, but I for one could not be happier about it. **** Panda.

"Red Sox manager John Farrell announced Thursday morning that Travis Shaw, not Sandoval, will be the team's starting third baseman on opening day. Farrell cited defense as the overriding factor for the decision, though Shaw has also been more reliable than Sandoval with the bat recently, too."

I don't know if this is an omen or not but the first thing the Red Sox saw upon landing in Montreal was....

It was either Sandoval or his agent, but one of them said something to the effect of "you don't leave the Ferrari in the garage" according to Heyman and it was the hardest I've laughed in a long time.

He's more of a broken down mobile home than a Ferrari

You are not wrong

from what I've heard the excitement in the air in Montreal was palpable....move Tampa there. Don't even need to rearrange the divisions

Road trips for baseball in Montreal epic

I have always had a soft spot for the Montreal Expos because I was at the first game they ever played in Montreal. In April 1969 I went to Montreal for a Bruins playoff game and they lost in OT in Game 2 ( a game they should have won ) - That night a bartender at the old Mount Royal Hotel took pity on us and gave us 2 tickets to the Expos game the next afternoon - the first one.

They became my National League team.

Olympic Stadium was just awful for baseball but the fans turned out. They only stopped coming when bad ownership destroyed the team. Watch this video and you will understand Nos Amours.

But MLB says they will not return unless a new stadium is built and a stadium will not be built on speculation - they tried that in Quebec City to get the Nords back and so far nothing.

And I don't blame MLB one bit.

There should be a stipulation in both MLB and NFL that any non-open-air stadium built must be retractable-roof.

Montreal was supposed to be retractable but it never worked. So in 1987 they sealed the roof and since the stadium was supposed to be open in the summer it never had air conditioning.
