I don't mind seeing that comparison one bit. Haha.

We might see him at some point this season.

Who will replace Rodriguez while he's out? Roenis (let's forget last nights outing)? I'm hoping Wright goes to bullpen as long reliever. Barnes has looked real good too.

They can easily just have a 4 man rotation of price, Porcello, bucholz, kelly with all the off days until mid to late April so maybe just need 1 spot start for wright or Roenis until e rod Is back most likely the end of April/may 1st

I'd imagine Wright locked down the 5 spot with his outing today.

He's a useful pitcher, I like him a lot as long as there is somebody to catch him. I've wanted him to get more of a look over the last two years, especially with some of the crap that has been run out there. He can be very serviceable and that is really all we need most nights with the lineup and bullpen

at this point Im not liking Porcello in the top 5

Sam Travis is going to be a stud glad a scout has come to my way of thinking

So Holt will start in LF against righties. Will Castillo and Young fill in for Holt and JBJ against lefties or just Castillo for Holt or just Young for Holt?

I know something will work itself out eventually.

I'm shocked, shocked, to see Farrell screwing Castillo AGAIN.

Give him a string of regular season games, you moron. It's not like Chris Young is going to depreciate on the shelf.

Are you trying to imply that a 32 year old, well traveled veteran player doesn't have upside?

I honestly don't get WTF Farrell is doing. He screwed Castillo last year by starting a broken down Shane Victorino over him, and SV did the unexpected and got hurt.

He screwed Xander the year before in favor of Stephen Drew. After he got hurt, all the young guys got to play and play well. I don't think that was a shock either. If you give JF the choice, he'll take the safe play, even if it's wrong. Like what he did with JBJ. The Sox should force him to play the young guys or move on from JF as the manager because it's hurting the team.

What about David Murphy

This Castillo thing feels like the reverse of the Brett Connolly situation with the Bruins. Both players are still young (mostly in terms of pro/major league experience), both have tremendous pedigrees, both were highly touted amateurs, and both have ranged from questionable to lousy in their limited pro time. But with Connolly, the coach played him regularly in the hopes of getting the player with promise. It's clear he likely isn't the guy the scouts had hoped for, but I'd argue he's carved out another role and probably should still have it over Hayes. So the investment hasn't been a total disaster.

On the other hand, Castillo hasn't been given the same chance by the manager and now again he's seemingly being denied. I just don't get it. I respect he must think that other players give him a better chance to win now, but I can't imagine the difference between Castillo and the alternatives is really that big of a deal, even to a manager on a warm seat.

Castillo can't hit righties with velocity, Holt is very good at hitting hard throwing righties. The Sox are running into Kluber/Carrasco/Salazar I would imagine. Boom, easy decision

Castillo isn't getting screwed. He hasn't earned a thing. I find it hilarious when people complain about the "young" guy Castillo getting screwed when Holt is younger and actually has baseball instincts.

I'm not going to call Rusney a bust quite yet like that hack Shank, but it is pretty easy to see why they are holding off on starting him in left for the opening series. Holt isn't ideally an everyday kind of guy (as evidenced by him falling off of a cliff the last two years in the 2nd half) and I think the team knows this...but I totally understand why Holt is going to be starting to begin the year- especially against Cleveland. Another far more minor factor that can be looked at when making the decision for the beginning of the year is the weather- the forecast looks especially brutal for the opening series and it is probably something Holt is far more comfortable playing in at this point in time. At last check I'm pretty sure I saw it was going to be around 30 degrees so for a guy with no real extensive history hitting in the cold it would be an adjustment. Combine that with him being such a bulky/yolked guy who is constantly pulling muscles and those are good supporting reasons for picking Holt over Castillo to start the year.

I do want to clarify that I expect and want Castillo to be a regular by the middle of the season...I just get what they are doing now

Respect your view, CDJ, but I don't agree. I think if you look at how he's been treated compared to both Betts and JBJ, Farrell has never given him a fair chance.

JBJ has received multiple kicks at the can. He essentially batted terribly for a strong string of starts in 2013 -- 37 games, batting .189 by the end. And then batted terribly for almost 3/4 of a season in 2014, and batted .198 then. And still really didn't hit all that well last year, but still got 74 games.

Mookie Betts had some highs and lows in 2014, started out batting terribly through June, July, and most of August, but then started to work things out and finished strong, with a .291, based mainly on a strong stretch from mid August through September. The point, is he was given 52 games to work out his problems and it has paid off.

Rusney? Hasn't even come close to receiving that kind of opportunity under Farrell. 10 games in 2014 where he actually batted and played very well. And last season, despite those 10 games, he was platooned the entire season under Farrell right up until Farrell went on leave for treatment. And as I've pointed out, once he got a string of games, he started hitting consistently, ending August batting just under .300.

And in terms of Rusney hitting righties. A few points.

First, despite not getting the same starts and playing time, can I point out he hit lefties last season for a .318 avg, which is better than Jackie (.306), Brock (.312), and Mookie (.311)?

Second, while it's true Rusney did not hit as well against righties last season (.222), he's not the only one that struggles vs righties. Jackie does (.221) as does Chris Young (.182). And while Brock and Mookie are better, they don't light it up against righties either, both with a "discount" in their BA vs righties compared to lefties. And Allen Craig in recent years has struggled immensely vs RHs. The difference, of course, is all of these guys have been given a chance to work out those issues, while Rusney hasn't. Brock and Rusney are essentially the same age (Brock a year younger), but Rusney has a better arm and more speed to cover OF distance defensively compared to Brock and surely has more upside at the plate, if just given a chance.

To me, "earning" has nothing to do with it. They invested in him. Give him a chance. Did Jackie "earn" 127 games in 2014 after batting so badly in 2013? Not at all. Did Mookie "earn" more trust in 2014, after batting badly for through July/August, to receive more starts in late August and September? Again, not really. But in both cases, you recognize each player's upside, and give them some time to work out their issues. Rusney has simply not received that same treatment. Looks to me differential treatment by Farrell for whatever reason.
