OT: MLB Discussion Thread, Part II: Yanks pay Ellsbury

For the top agent to allocate 2 hours of his time as well as the next 2 members of Cano's management team to be present for not only that meeting but also a previous meeting, there would need to be some sort of numbers being tossed around - tentative ofcourse, but nonetheless still being discussed.

Sandy and Jeff and Jay didn't all just meet up for dinner to brag about Cano's upstanding character.

I'm sure Jay wanted it known that Cano wanted to stay in NY to remain as marketable as possible. I'm sure that Alderson, who seems to be as brutally honest as they come, must have asked about figures too to see if there was a realistic shot of getting this done.

Mets have too many holes to fill. Alderson needs to know where to best focus his efforts. Numbers can't not have been discussed. Maybe they weren't last night but there needs to have been some reason that Jay Z decided to meet with them a 2nd time. At some point before or during this meeting someone needed to have asked where this was going financially... especially since the MEts owners are in dire straights financially.

Not to mention Hal Steinbrenner seems committed to some fiscal sanity, especially after A-Rod hoodwinked him back in 2007. Why would the Yankees need to up their initial offer? Show me another team willing to offer more. The guy is a very good, but not great, player with an ugly attitude.

Again, I have no idea where the bidding war is going to from. The market is obviously not what they had hoped for if they're trying to drag the Mets into this.

Really don't see the Mets as being a fit.

Most I can see being offered (as an overpayment) is 7 years 180, which is a little over 25/yr avg.

Market supply however is changing. Teams are becoming averse to long contracts. 10 years won't happen. 7 is pushing it. But for 7 or even 6 years his avg per year will be higher than anticipated.

25.7 is pushing it for me. Anything over and I'm out if i'm a GM.

My guess is Yanks bump their offer to 7/170 or 7/180 and he accepts that.

Oh Mets are a fit. They need a guy like Cano, just don't know if they'll pony up the cash. Dodgers will have to pay Kershaw shortly and as loaded as they are they still have a budget.

No need for Yankees to bump any offers because like Ranger Boy said they are bidding against themselves. If Yankees offered 160/7 like RB said ( not saying it's not true) they'll hold true to that. If no one else is offering more what is Cano going to do? Take a 1 year deal elsewhere and hope to cash in 12 months later (when he's 32)? Good luck with that Robbie.

All reasons why saying "Cano rumored to the Mets" is completely erroneous.

Wonder if Mets offer him a 5 yr/125 if he'll accept. Same type of contract that CC got. Alderson seems pretty committed to not going over 5 years on anyone. Wright's contract was given so it would keep him here for his career. Cano isn't in the same boat, he's a mercenary.

I think Cano made a monumental mistake going with Jay Z's agency.

Scott Boras specializes in creating a bidding war, even when theres not an actual bidding war.

Not a chance. What Yankees have offered is a better deal. Cano only has 1 shot at a big payday.

Boras's strategy the last few years has been to wait as long as possible to get a big payday, and for guys last year (Michael Bourn, Kyle Lohse, and Rafael Soriano), it didn't pay off. They got deals, but for much less than what was originally proposed. Given the uncertainty of being a high-ticket Boras client these days, I can see why someone would leave. Don't forget, these guys have real lives that have to work in conjunction with their job contracts, and waiting until the last minute to decide where you and your family are going to move for the next several years is not a pleasant scenario.

Those guys were all second tier free agents. As the marquee guy on the market, you go with Boras.
 
I'm a Dodger fan, so we are in the midst of a monster spending spree, but if I'm Randy Levine, I let Cano go and do a rebuild; they need one.

I'd trade fatboy CC while he still has value, same with the oft-injured Tex, and let Granderson walk.

The Yankees just need a total facelift, like it or not. It's smart business, at this point. Any money lost in ticket revenue will be covered by the salary drops.

That logic doesn't follow. The process will be the same either way, especially when the market for Cano will be as thin as it is. If anything, Boras would drag the process out even longer than with the second-tier guys.

It follows just fine. Whens the last time Boras drew a 9 figure negotiation out for so long?

The guy is a pro, a master at what he does. Hes played MLB like a fiddle and made countless players rich. Cano is an idiot for putting the rest of his professional life in the hands of an inexperienced Jay Z's pet project.

I dont even think Boras was involved in that. I believe A-Rod went to Hal Steinbrenner's home and begged.

Anyway, the Lohse and other 2nd/3rd tier guys examples went into January/February.

Still, a high-profile Boras client went a month later than this without a contract. I believe at this time in 2007 Boras was still asking for a 12 year deal (which is slightly more ridiculous than what he actually got).

I think this Cano stuff is going to go on for a while. Hes made it clear he wants as much cash as possible, and MLB is starting to make it clear that theres not much of a market out there for his demands.

Whats made Boras such a super agent for all these years is his ability to create markets out of seemingly thin air. You know damn well he'd have the Yankees bidding against somebody, even if it was against themselves. Jay Z's crew? They're new to this stuff. This is Cano's one chance at the huge payday. It baffles the mind he'd dump Boras before that.
 
Rodriguez negotiated the deal with the Steinbrenner's.

The mystery surrounding Alex Rodriguez's return to the bargaining table with the Yankees has been solved.

Rodriguez, who had alienated the club - and all of baseball - when he chose to opt out of his contract during Game 4 of the World Series last month, reached out to the Steinbrenner family through two intermediaries who work for Goldman Sachs, the investment banking giant that owns a piece of the YES network.

A-Rod first contacted John Mallory, a Los Angeles-based managing director with Goldman Sachs, looking for advice to jump-start negotiations with the Steinbrenner family, the Daily News has learned. Mallory then directed Rodriguez to Gerald Cardinale, a Goldman Sachs managing director and YES board member who is the point man for the Goldman Sachs relationship with the Yankees.

The two men, in turn, contacted Yankees president Randy Levine, who got the ball rolling between A-Rod and the Steinbrenners. Rodriguez and his wife Cynthia met with the Steinbrenners in Tampa yesterday and put the finishing touches on what is expected to be a 10-year, $275 million contract to keep the two-time MVP in the Bronx.

A-Rod made the move toward the Yankees on his own after his agent, Scott Boras, leaked news of the opt-out before the World Series was even over, angering commissioner Bud Selig and the victorious Red Sox and damaging Rodriguez's reputation. Boras has been telling members of the media for the past two days that he is once again involved with discussions with the Yankees.

4 more years remaining on that contract and the Yankees are hoping the arbitrator upholds the 211 game suspension. Rodriguez could end up appealing it by going to court. What a gong show. Bad hips.
