Speculation: Mittlestadt on his way out from Colorado?

Middlestadt is a depreciating asset and has negative trade value. The only saving grace is that he has two years at 5.75 remaining on his contract after the 2024-2025 season.

He's negative in ES for Corsi Rel and Fenwick Rel as a 2C on the Avalanche with a career low faceoff win pct of 41%. His contract is baffling.
I mean that player you’re describing was Buffalo’s top 5v5 point producer when they traded him last year and then elevated his game even more for Colorado down the stretch and into the playoffs. I don’t think anybody questions his contract. That was very well earned. We’re just questioning what the hell happened to him over the last 45-50 days or so lol.

He's on pace for just 46 points, despite being on one of the best offensive teams in the league.

I don't think he plays with anyone of Colorado's hot-shot guys (Mac, Rants, Makar, or even Nichushkin?). I think they have him on his own line. I also think his most egregious struggles this season has been defensively.

He hasn’t been that bad defensively it’s the offence that is lacking.

So I wonder if both teams want a do-over on the Moddlestadt-Byram trade.

Why would Buffalo want one?

Nope, Byram has been good for Buffalo. The only “problem” is that having both him and Power behind Dahlin is a bit redundant.

Exactly the issue. We need an RD top 4 desperately. I would move Power. I like Byram. He's dynamic.

Is there a team that would want Mittlestadt and also retain for the rest of this season on Granlund to rent him to Colorado as a replacement?

Mittelstadt is a great example of people not knowing how sustainable high on-ice shooting percentage is, especially for players who don't score that much.

Not only was he lucky, but his luck had slimmer margins for success.
So we're just going to ignore that he was a 60 points player the last 2 season for Buffalo and had 9 points in 11 games in the playoffs last year?

Mittlestadt took his foot off the gas. Which is something you can do when you play for the Buffalo Sabres. The question is now can he get back to where he was before this absence and then not repeat it. He is not a great athlete. He's going to have to learn how to play at the high pace level a team like Colorado does for a whole season

Reminds me of the Monahan sweepstakes. And Habs fans insisting Colorado wasn't deep enough (that was correct) down the middle.

But Avs fans were right that if your team needs C help then Monahan ain't it.

Granlund has value. He'll probably bring back a first and other assets. Good for the Sharks for getting a good trade at the deadline. But whoever gets Granlund expecting him to be a positive contributor as a 2C in the playoffs is going to get dunked on.

I doubt Granlund pulls a first back but if a team has playoff competitive middle six wingers to put around him, he can play well enough to contribute. Granlund isn’t the player he was before he came to San José.

He's never driven play as much as his point totals suggest, and when those point totals aren't very high to begin with that doesn't lead to a lot of value.

Colorado bought very high on a player whose metrics indicated he was having a career year.

Ritchie and Mittelstadt (with retention) for Kadri and third rounder.

Aves fill the second line hole. And get a trade deadline asset to throw away for rentals to get into the wild card spot.

Flames get a high end prospect. And Mittelstadt could rebound or at the worst with retention only costs around 4 millions in cap until they can dump his as a rental in two seasons.
Garbage for the Avs
