a lot of this ROR stuff is pure assumptions on fans why he didn't re-sign here . We do know he was talking to Dubas about it . He also has come out and said a large deciding factor was to play for a team he was getting a front line role with and the on the Leafs he would of always been taking a backseat to the core guys .
No assumption, he said it out loud.

It was during a golf thing SN was covering, it was before July 1st and he basically said that there were some things he would change but hadn't ruled out resigning yet.

It wasn't until September when he came out with the " way too much attention" narrative.

I don't doubt that played into the things he wasn't thrilled about.

Assumptions i meant are the narrative he didn't like the team makeup , on ice comraderie ect , ect.
Tbh i thought he was really underwhelming in his short time here.

Not easy to come in as a rental and perform. He also was playing hurt from what I remember. He's a fantastic player just didn't fit in here. He's doing decent in Nashville all the power to him.

Remember reading years ago how little or how few dead line accusitions actually make much of a difference . Especially none role player types . Always in the back of my head its a mistake to throw capital on rentals .

Just boggles the mind how he’s exempted from so many standard NHL chores. Even a guy like Nikita Kucherov, who has 30 points on Marner in a career year, super skilled little guy can be involved in x, y, z, compete in traffic and get involved in the rough stuff. And we’re not even going to talk about paycheques.
The GWG against vs Edmonton, Mcdavid the best player in the game... Was literally about to fall on the goalie, he was screening him so well. Allowing the Edmonton player to score.

How many more points would Matthew get, or Tavares get, if Marner screened the goalie occasionally? Watch Marners playoff goals over the past few years and you will see that majority of them the goalie couldn't see anything with all the blue shirts standing over him. In fact the goalie flat out guessed on a few. If his linemates weren't screening the goalie, the goalie would've stopped Marners muffin most of the time.

Ever seen Marner screening the goalie for his linemates? Na, Marner is too good for that.

I'll give Marner credit though, he sure "looks dialed in" always hunched over and super concentrated on the play while in safe areas of the ice.

But excelling in his captaincy role and new coach. Anyone surprised? Wasn't Bertuzzi excellent before the Leafs too?

I love that Marner won't stand up for himself or teammates on the ice, but loves defending himself and fans against mean internet critics. Lol

It is not Brodie's, or even Keefer's fault, he is playing many many levels over his head .. it has been completely obvious to most of us ex players hanging out at hot Stove all season long .. folks it is Shanny/Tre's issue and those 2 dummies have done nothing about it all season long .. what do you expect Keefer to do? .. he has 1 top 4 D on his team Rielly .. last night he gassed him out badly and look what happened .. he was so gassed he could clear a puck late in game and we lost .. folks no pro team can play D with a #1 and 6 other guys who are all at best #6 guys .. it is next to impossible to coach through that problem
If that is the case...why doesn't he get the forwards to play a system that will help our D? Why not bench a star to prove your point about being careless? I get the D is bad...I can see it too but you can't just go into each game letting the players zoom around without any kind of system to default to.

Does anyone else think that Bertuzzi looks like he's on roller skates out there? He looks like he is playing an inline skating hockey game compared to everyone else...it's kind of funny to watch. He still gets where he wants to go...just with style.

It's wild how he's just exempted from doing a lot of those things. You'd think he was Johnny Gaudreau size or an 18 year old call up still.

I'll take plays that wont work in the playoffs for $500 Alec.

Don't forget his assist from that game too... A blueline wrist shot from 62'. Both plays he got points on, he literally couldn't have been further away from the net in those respective spots.

The same plays he tries over and over in the playoffs that never work because teams are dialed in.

Mitch Marner even strength primary assists (one while 3vs3):

Minnesota - 2 both Matthews
Buff - 1 matthews
Tampa - 1 knies
Minnesota - 1 Knies
Boston - 1 Matthews
Cbj - 1 Matthews
Cbj - 1 Matthews
Cbj - 1 Matthews
Anaehim - 1 matthews (ot)
Sjs - 1 mccabe
Oilers - 1 Matthews

For being "Gretzky like" Marner sure struggles to set up anybody other than Matthews. Not even one EV primary assist to Tavares. How many assists would he have if the best goal scorer in the NHL wasn't on his line?

Also... 8 of his 12 assists are vs bottom 5 teams. He seems to really struggle to get EV strength primary assists vs good team's. Only three of these teams are in playoff position.

Seems like Marner will make sneaky to incredible passes in chaos on a regular basis but often not execute the clean, quick and efficient plays that help space things properly in the ozone. To Kypreos’ point that the Leafs are a poor passing team. He doesn’t distribute it clean a la Giroux, Kane, Kucherov. His play style is definitely… different.

Damn right Kucherov is a sadistic psychopath. But yeah, Mitch just seems like a guy who has a permanent hall pass on so many of the chores of an NHL game.

You mean like be their #1 penalty killer and lead the team in points almost every season?

Kucherov can go back to kicking other players and not getting called for it.
f*** him and the NHL for allowing that shit to happen.
A player lost his life this year along due to an incident involving a skate blade, and Kucherov is out there kicking people.

I find him reprehensible and would be disgusted if a Leaf player did that shit.

I'm still dismayed with Domi for his elbow on Niedermayer, that was gross, but it wasn't using a potentially deadly weapon dangerous.

But you have no issue with what Niedermayer did with his stick prior the elbow from Domi? If memory serves correctly, doesn't Nidermayer give Domi and vicious cross check to the mouth the previous game, also earlier in the game.....didn't Neidermayer take a baseball swing at Domi while he slide into the net and tangled up with Brodeur?

Don't get too excited - Leafs penalty kill is bottom 10 in the league. As a different poster pointed out, his advanced stats on the PK aren't even good. Think Nylanders PK stats might even be better. Kovalev could have been given a regularly shift on the PK too, but just because he's on the PK doesn't mean it's a good think. Just means the coach doesn't know what he's doing.

Are you referring to this Kucherov kick where Marner reacts like a 5 year old, flaring his nostrils, about to throw Tantrum?

He was excellent last night. He and matthew’s we’re miles better than anyone else on the ice.
Matthews was miles ahead of everyone last night but agreed they both were the 2 best players on the team but marner wasn’t in the same room as matthews and no one else was even on the building as them

He will never bench marner or matthews so it doesn’t matter marner at most will miss a shift matthews nothing but he’ll bench Willy inna heartbeat honestly he needs to go we need a coach with balls

That is very true and I would do it too .. my point was you can't have a high octane breakout with that D core .. you have to move to wingers back on boards to help out on wall digs and puck retrievals .. and you need your Cs to give support to both D and wingers before breaking out .. basically a 5 man back D .. my guess reason he doesn't do it is because he has little faith in Mitch, JT, Willy and a couple others in our end on wall .. and JT flat out can't make C coverage anymore .. certainly against faster teams like Avs, Oilers and Flames he has been struggling mightily .. and it will get worse form him against Canucks who may be fastest team .. bottom line this team is massively handicapped by a completely inadequate D core (which in my opinion is bottom 5 in league right now)
