Maby the other players subconscious relax(step back) a few% when a star comes back in to the lineup? On a full team thats will show on ice.

Agreed, Edmundson is probably more important. Marner provides the pressure on the point, but ultimately if you can't do the job out front, your PK is lost.

I think you missed my point - try reading the post I replied to and my reply together.

As I said, just having a little fun - neither post actually adds anything of value to the conversation.

We are 25th best PK with Mitch, anyway you slice it. @Notsince67 I like how you can argue he is the best PK specialist in the league and that his presence on the ice means nothing at the same time.

The best PKer on the planet probably always playing with 3 pylons. The only explanation. Yet the other pylons when on the ice PKing without Marner, prevent goals against at a higher rate.

Something fishy here

Hope Marner rests until game 1 honestly. I've sprained my ankles enough times and they are never the same, and take ages to heal. We're not competing for the division at this stage so other than getting reps it's not totally necessary. Our PK is terrible without him holy cow. I still think we need to goon it up, those calls are going to vanish by games 5-7. If we can kill 2-6 minutes a game we'll be fine.

NHL playoffs is such a goofy game. A thought crossed my mind where we should just take a penalty in the 1st to avoid any 3rd period calls since there is so much focus on the ledger being close to even. Don't want to play a clean 1st and 2nd and take calls in the 3rd.

The way the NHL handles the playoffs is probably the dumbest of the Big 4 sports leagues. It's the only league where a completely different style of play in the playoffs is rewarded compared to the regular season.

Is there any other sport where you hear the sentence "(team)'s lineup is designed to win in the playoffs" in a tone that suggests it wouldn't be great in the regular season?

True story, but the goon hockey in the playoffs is very consistent. It had to start with 74,75 Flyers at the very least, maybe even sooner.

At some point, we need to catch up!

We did catch up, and didn't win with it in 99-04, and those teams developed a reputation that the NHL STILL uses to shut down the Leafs playing too physical. Every time the Leafs have attempted to up their physicality since 2004, they've gotten a huge neon sign from the league that they do NOT want the Leafs to play like that EVER.

For f***'s sake, we signed Reaves this year, and it took 3 games for him to start taking penalties for STEPPING ON THE ICE. When we traded for Muzzin, it took 5 games for the refs to start sending him to the box for throwing hits. I'm wondering how many games before they start cracking down on Edmundson, who has always played with a bit of an edge...

I think the big difference is because during the regular season you play a team today and may not play them again for a month or more. So why pummel them? Too soften them up for who they are playing next at the same time bruising up yourselves. While in the playoffs you will face them at least 4 straight times in about a week. So if you’re capable of laying on a bruising by either fighting or just hard checking your opponent will definitely be a little sore next game and more so as the series goes on.

The other big difference is that (normally) they let A LOT of shit go in the playoffs they wouldn't in the regular season, which benefits teams that are half goon (see pretty much every lineup the Bruins have iced since Jumbo Joe was traded). This seems like it's okay until you end up with final 4's where 75% of the teams look like the '95 New Jersey Devils and the series are great cures for insomnia.

The NHL seems to KNOW this is bad (no one wants to watch two teams trap each other to death), but they don't seem to know what they should do about it.

:DD I like how refs give them a few games before they notice the Leafs logo. Like they are shocked the first couple of games and then back to business!
 
Sometimes the best recipe is availibility and Mitch just isn't available enough in the playoffs.

You make a lot of sense. I know many hate Damian Cox but I thought he was dead on when he said this league is getting stale and does not like change. They have not made many serious changes to the game since the lockout. Gary is good for the owners but he sucks for the game and it's fans. Time for the league to replace him with somebody with a fresh set of ideas IMO.
