Mitch Marner, Yet Again

The skill is there for sure. Matthews I see trying to fight through it in the playoffs. Nylander is a strong dude and is more engaged in the playoffs. He looks nonchalant but the willingness is there.

The one thing about Mitch is that he isn’t a fast skater, isn’t really strong on his skates and seems to shy away from digging in. I don’t expect him to throw huge hits, but get in the corners and fight for the puck. I don’t see him doing that. Maybe he will change his mind this postseason.

Knies really is the key though.

Marner’s avoidance does leave you wanting more and if he does display that this postseason it’s going to be hard ti argue in favour of keeping him a leaf. I hope he just racks up the goals and produces, if Matthews doesn’t want to take charge, one of Nylander and Marner should.

Tkachuk doesn't lead anything... dude was a dud in the playoffs until he became the 5th most important player on his team.

I do think the team in general leads as a team, but most good teams do...

100% agree, just mean Matt is maybe looked at as the locker room leader.

California's tax situation is almost as brutal as Canada's as well - do California teams have any trouble with agents like Ferris and getting star player re-signed at decent rates?

I think most young athletes would rather play in California than Canada given the weather and other attractions.

California has had problems getting players. They definitely NEVER get deals.
Look at doughty/karlson/vlasic. Et al.

not sure why but there have been multiple players that have refused LA/anaheim but came to Toronto.

Dadanov, rantanen etc.

That’s fair. We really don’t know what goes on inside their heads and all we can do is judge what we see.

However I wish all three of the amigos channeled their emotion differently. I wish Matthews and Nylander had a little more fire and played more physical when things get though. Don’t back down from guys. And I wish Marner didn’t complain as much and think the world is out to get him. I think the pressure of playing in Toronto and being looked at as a leader of the team gets to him.

I think 4 nation for marner by playing alongside exemple Crosby learned a lot about how your mind set should be can really help marner
Agreed, having a personality and not being stoic is basically a death sentence in hockey. I didn’t grow up playing hockey, only watched it! so I’ve never understood why players with big personalities are so disliked.

and it's just in hockey those player being disliked, in any other sport outside of hockey, its really the case

Well according to you the only thing that matters is the playoffs. You would think a 69 goal scorer winner of numerous regular season trophies would be just as unstoppable in the playoffs.
But you change the goal posts. Only mariners regular season means nothing and it’s only just the playoffs.
You my friend have a real problem putting things on a level playing field when it comes to marner.
Did he give you a wedgie and take your lunch money in kindergarten.
Every post in every forum you have to bring marner into it.

They either make it work or his cap is the problem standing in the face of change.

So we should listen to Kelly Hurdy and Biznasty when they have something to say (I’m not saying you lead the charge on this) but disregard Giordano an NHL vet who was in the room with these guys?

Also playing with emotion doesn’t mean that you need to be extra physical. I’m not sure why that’s hard for people to understand. Playing with emotion can simply be, just being first on pucks constantly and putting forth a strong effort, not cheating offense and just playing hard. Playing with emotion should not lead to anyone, let alone Matthews getting hurt.
I'm didn't say listen to Kelly Hurdy and Biznasty, just that no one person has the gospel truth. I also didn't say that emotion means physicality or disregard Giordano.

Dallas is in Toronto?
Sorry. Ontario’s

Dadanov came to Ottawa.
And every single outlet confirmed that he would have extended in Toronto but would not have in la

Edit. I don’t know why…. But they appear to have an LA bias. Not sure if there is a certain tax/housing thing that is different than Ontario even though they seem to be similar.

Forgot him as well, but Id guess people would argue Tkachuk is really the leader there.

Barkov and Huberdeau were not really celebrated as winners and exemplary leaders when they ran the show in Florida. There was the whole fiasco with the Panthers players going to the club or something in Game 2 or whatever en route to getting swept by Tampa in 2021 or 2021 or something like that. Basically the whole reason they blew it up and got Tkachuk.

Plus whatever Barkov does isn’t our business. Matthews could be comatose as a personality but rip home 4 goals in the playoffs every night and no one would care. It’s the combination of not getting it done and not having the emotional heat that gets him criticized.

Mitch is different. He’s a ball of nerves and anxiety and talent meeting self doubt, and he’s so intimidated at times by just the chaos in the playoffs. Traditionally he carries a big heavy burden, but he also looks like he’s complaining about the burden at times. And it’s the media this and social media that. So the pile on continues.

Lack of depth scoring, I mentioned that already. That’s one of the main things that gets you over the hump in those tight do or die games. Also, the other team having a better goalie helps when they’re forced to activate their god mode, which just makes it that much harder for us to score compared to our opponent.
Why can’t our 10mil plus guys activate GODmode like McD, Drai, Pastra, Marchand, Tkachuk, Kuch, Point, heck even Nic Paul.

Did our boys made the opposing goalies looked great or did the opposing goalies made our boys looked bad? Considering the common denominator is not the goalie but our Core. I am leaning toward our guys were making the opposing goalies looked great.

At 28 you don't develop that willingness. If you see it this postseason, it will be a one time contract thing.

When has a player suddenly changed at 28 years old? He is what he is at this point.

Yep... if Marner battled in the playoff like he does with the media (or his contracts), Leafs would have a couple cups and Marner a couple Conn Smythe trophies.

Just look at the price Brad Marchand pays to do anything in this league. You think it's easy for him to be 5'8" or 5'9" whatever, generate so much hate and animosity on a nightly basis or in a series, and then have to back it up, looking over his shoulder while producing big numbers and provide leadership?

Yeah, Mitch Marner's game is not that, but there's a lot of room for growth when it comes to sacrificing to get things done in the heat of the playoffs.

We all saw Nylander call him out last year in the playoffs. I’m sure he didn’t mean for it to be caught on national TV, but it’s really telling about their differences in attitude and maybe why Nylander is able to stay consistent in the playoffs while Marner fades when things get tough.

With every year though, there’s hope Marner has matured.
Matured? He's not 21...guy will be over the hill as a hockey player in a few years.

Adjust for the FLA tax state and the timing of Kucherov's signing compared to this year and I'd like to know what Kucherov would re-sign for in Toronto if he was up this year.

What is Kucherov worth in Toronto signing this year compared to what he signed for two years ago in Tampa - This is a need to know question.
You don't even have to look at Kucherov's contract...just look at what Draisaitl signed for in Edmonton...Marner is not as good, nor as impactful as Draisaitl, yet he wants $14 mil per too? If Tre offered Marner for Draisaitl, he would be laughed out of town.

Marner has yet to say that he wants 14M.

With Draisatl's contract you have to adjust for an inflated cap which wasn't anounced until a few months after he signed. It sounds minimal but it could count for about a 4% increase. All in all I have Marner in the 12.75-13.5M range. Anything above this and it's Tre being desperate imo.
